Book excerpt: The dynamics of a fluid-conveying pipe, clamped at the upstream end and elastically supported at the downstream end, are studied and applied to the special case of an LMFBR steam-generator tube. First, the governing equations of the mathematical model are presented in a universal dimensionless form. Then, the stability/instability boundaries of the system are discussed. Finally, an approximate solution based on the modal expansion technique is presented for transient response; several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the method of analysis. It is shown that the pipe may lose its stability by buckling, flutter, or both, depending on the magnitudes of the displacement as well as rotational-spring constants at the end. In general, the critical flow velocity is very high; hence, system components such as steam-generator tubes are unlikely to lose stability in practical flow-velocity ranges. However, the response in subcritical flow-velocity ranges is also important; the method presented can accurately predict the response of a system to an excitation with an arbitrary initial condition and time-dependent boundary condition. The method can also be applied to other nonconservative systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of two books concentrating on the dynamics of slender bodies within or containing axial flow, Fluid-Structure Interaction, Volume 1 covers the fundamentals and mechanisms giving rise to flow-induced vibration, with a particular focus on the challenges associated with pipes conveying fluid. This volume has been thoroughly updated to reference the latest developments in the field, with a continued emphasis on the understanding of dynamical behaviour and analytical methods needed to provide long-term solutions and validate the latest computational methods and codes. In this edition, Chapter 7 from Volume 2 has also been moved to Volume 1, meaning that Volume 1 now mainly treats the dynamics of systems subjected to internal flow, whereas in Volume 2 the axial flow is in most cases external to the flow or annular. Provides an in-depth review of an extensive range of fluid-structure interaction topics, with detailed real-world examples and thorough referencing throughout for additional detail Organized by structure and problem type, allowing you to dip into the sections that are relevant to the particular problem you are facing, with numerous appendices containing the equations relevant to specific problems Supports development of long-term solutions by focusing on the fundamentals and mechanisms needed to understand underlying causes and operating conditions under which apparent solutions might not prove effective

Book excerpt: "This thesis studies the linear and nonlinear dynamics of pipes conveying fluid. It consists of four peer-reviewed journal papers, three published and one submitted for publication. The aim is to investigate aspects of the dynamical behaviour of extensible and inextensible pipes conveying fluid, both theoretically and experimentally. In particular, (i) the three-dimensional nonlinear dynamics of a pipe conveying fluid, constrained by an array of four springs attached at a point along its length is examined from the theoretical and experimental perspectives; (ii) the three-dimensional dynamical behaviour of a fluid-conveying cantilevered pipe fitted with an end-mass and additional intra-span spring support is investigated, both theoretically and experimentally; (iii) the nonlinear planar dynamics of a cantilevered extensible pipe conveying fluid is investigated theoretically via two different numerical techniques; (iv) the phase-shift along the length of the measuring pipe of a Coriolis mass-flowmeter is developed (and thus mass-flow rate is determined) analytically by means of a perturbation technique and confirmed numerically. In the theoretical analyses, the Galerkin method and Lagrange equations for systems containing non-material volumes are employed to obtain a set of nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equations. These equations are solved by means of Houbolt's finite difference scheme, the pseudo-arclength continuation technique, and direct time integration via a modified Rosenbrock technique. The method of multiple timescales, an approximate analytical technique, is also used to predict the phase-shift along the length of the measuring pipe of a Coriolis mass-flowmeter.A series of experiments were conducted with silicone rubber pipes conveying water, and thereby the theoretical models have been broadly validated." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on advanced methods for the structural and thermal analysis of deepwater pipelines and risers. It discusses the limit strength of sandwich pipes, including finite-element analysis using Python scripts, collapse of sandwich pipes with cementitious/polymer composites, buckle propagation of sandwich pipes, dynamic behavior of subsea pipes, flow-induced vibration of functionally graded pipes, two-phase flow-induced vibration of pipelines, vortex-induced vibration of free-spanning pipelines, and the thermal analysis of composites pipes with passive insulation, active heating, and phase change material layers. It also explores structural analysis using finite element analysis and the integral transform technique for fluid-structure interaction. Lastly, the use of lumped parameter formulations combined with finite differences for the thermal analysis of pipelines is examined.

Book excerpt: Illustrates theories and associated mathematical expressions with numerical examples using various methods, leading to exact solutions, more accurate results, and more computationally efficient techniques This book presents the derivations of the equations of motion for all structure foundations using either the continuous model or the discrete model. This mathematical display is a strong feature of the book as it helps to explain in full detail how calculations are reached and interpreted. In addition to the simple 'uniform' and 'straight' beams, the book introduces solution techniques for the complicated ‘non uniform’ beams (including linear or non-linear tapered beams), and curved beams. Most of the beams are analyzed by taking account of the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia of the beams themselves as well as the eccentricities and mass moments of inertia of the attachments. Demonstrates approaches which dramatically cut CPU times to a fraction of conventional FEM Presents "mode shapes" in addition to natural frequencies, which are critical for designers Gives detailed derivations for continuous and discrete model equations of motions Summarizes the analytical and numerical methods for the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and time histories of straight structures rods shafts Euler beams strings Timoshenko beams membranes/thin plates Conical rods and shafts Tapered beams Curved beams Has applications for students taking courses including vibration mechanics, dynamics of structures, and finite element analyses of structures, the transfer matrix method, and Jacobi method This book is ideal for graduate students in mechanical, civil, marine, aeronautical engineering courses as well as advanced undergraduates with a background in General Physics, Calculus, and Mechanics of Material. The book is also a handy reference for researchers and professional engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important, self-contained reference deals with structural life assessment (SLA) and structural health monitoring (SHM) in a combined form. SLA periodically evaluates the state and condition of a structural system and provides recommendations for possible maintenance actions or the end of structural service life. It is a diversified field and relies on the theories of fracture mechanics, fatigue damage process, and reliability theory. For common structures, their life assessment is not only governed by the theory of fracture mechanics and fatigue damage process, but by other factors such as corrosion, grounding, and sudden collision. On the other hand, SHM deals with the detection, prediction, and location of crack development online. Both SLA and SHM are combined in a unified and coherent treatment.
