Book excerpt: This report builds on the OECD Well-being Framework and applies a new perspective that analyses synergies and trade-offs between climate change mitigation and broader goals such as health, education, jobs, as well as wider environmental quality and the resources needed to sustain our livelihoods through time. This report takes an explicitly political economy approach to the low-emissions transitions needed across five economic sectors (electricity, heavy industry, residential, surface transport, and agriculture) that are responsible for more than 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Prajna Paramita Sutra, taught by the Buddha in sixteen assemblies in four places during twenty-two years and recorded posthumously by his disciples in six hundred fascicles with approximately five million words, is regarded as the largest canon in Buddhism. The translator has worked on this sutra since 2008 and has completed the whole text. The present version is, so far, the only complete presentation of this great sutra in English translated from the Chinese Da Bo Re Bo Luo Mi Duo Jing (600 Juan, or 600 fascicles), rendered from Sanskrit about 1,350 years ago (from 660 to 663) by Xuanzang (Hsüantsang, c. 602–664). This English translation appears as a set of thirty hardbound volumes, with twenty fascicles in each volume. A translator's introduction and an extensive glossary of terms are included in volume 1. The Great Prajna Paramita Sutra is important not only because of its extensive teaching but also because it demonstrates what the great bodhisattva, the great bodhisattva path of cultivation, and the great bodhisattva vehicle are. It also indicates how one should cultivate and learn to become a bodhisattvam -- and eventually a Buddha – transcending self-interest to reach a state of emptiness, selflessness, and nonattachment. This sutra depicts, manifests, and elaborates an entire learning process leading to Buddhahood. Regardless of where you are on the path to enlightenment, you will be nourished by the parables and dialogues within.

Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic analysis of challenges in the field of Geographical Information Systems and Science, geographical analysis, and regional science for Ontario, one of the fastest-changing provinces in Canada and one of North America's largest economic hubs. In nine chapters, the book offers advanced spatial analysis techniques and digital data content to integrate Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as tools to tackle regional and urban challenges. The chapters address the following main topics: 1) state-of-the-art approaches for regional discrepancies, 2) investigations of available methods for advanced spatial analysis, 3) identification of regional patterns and land use dynamics, 4) availability of Web 3.0 data content for regions without standardized data, and 5) the limitations and challenges of urbanization and its impact on landscape, heritage and ecosystems. The volume is divided into four sections dealing with key issues in Ontario, each addressing the use of GIS for crucial regional decision-making. The book will be of interest to researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, planners, regional scientists, and policy makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children throughout the world are engaged in a great number of activities classifiable as work. These range from relatively harmless, even laudable, activities like helping parents in their domestic chores, to morally and physically dangerous ones like soldiering and prostitution. If we leave out the former, we are left with what are generally called "economic" activities. Only a small minority, less than 4 percent of all working children, are estimated to be engaged in what ILO defines as the "unconditional" worst forms of child labour. The absolute number of children estimated to be engaged in the latter is, however, a stunning 8.4 million. Should we only be concerned about the worst forms of child labour? Most forms of child labour other than the worst ones have valuable learning-by-doing elements. Furthermore, child labour produces current income. If the family is credit rationed, child labour relaxes the liquidity constraint and increases current consumption. There is thus a trade-off between present and future consumption. To the extent that current consumption has a positive effect on future health (hence, on the child's future earning capacity and, more generally, utility), this trade-off may be lower than one might think. This book provides a blend of theory, empirical analysis and policy discussion. The first three chapters develop a fairly comprehensive theory of child labour, and related variables such as fertility, and infant mortality. Chapter 4, concerned with the effects of trade, contains both theory and cross-country empirical evidence. The remaining chapters are country studies, aimed at illustrating and testing different aspects of the theory in different geographical contexts. These chapters apply the latest developments in microeconometric methodology for dealing with endogeneity, unobserved heterogeneity, and the evaluation of public intervention.

Book excerpt: Arguing against the most recent trend in Thoreau studies, Dolis contends that, for Thoreau, nature is primordially a construct; it cannot be understood apart from language, through cultural constructions, techniques by means of which the subject composes the object. Both "nature" and the very "nature of nature" itself are subject to this single configuration. Subjectivity, in turn, entails its own technology, its style. It figures out both nature and the composition of its self as well."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspections and Reports on Dwellings is a series of four books, the first three of which have already been published to considerable success. This concluding book covers reports prepared before dwellings are put on the market for sale, whether as a legal requirement or on a voluntary basis. All take into account guidelines laid down by the Courts for this type of work. Sellers’ surveys are not new, but only now have standard formats been developed. In England and Wales this is the Home Condition Report, with its Energy Performance Certificate, which can only be prepared by Licensed Home Inspectors. The Home Inspectors hold a Diploma in Home Inspection, sometimes with an add-on Certificate in Valuation of Residential Property for Secured Lending and they are members of a Government approved certification scheme. In Scotland each dwelling must have a Single Survey Report carried out before it goes on the market from 1 December 2008. The Single Survey Report describes the condition, sets out accessibility information, contains a valuation and energy reports. Initially only Chartered Surveyors will be authorised to do this work. Both Inspectors and Surveyors have to follow Codes of Conduct and Practice, carry professional indemnity insurance and allow their reports to be monitored to maintain standards – an entirely new concept. The book examines the relevant legislation and looks closely at the entire qualification and certification process for Home Inspector Valuers. Additionally the likely reaction of sellers, buyers and lenders are discussed. A substantial section is devoted to lending on dwellings and the practicalities of their valuation by the Comparative, Investment and Residual methods following the requirements of the ‘Red Book’. Four detailed sample reports are included to demonstrate how reports must be presented. The book is intended for all those engaged in the preparation of reports on dwellings whether experienced, newly qualified or studying. As well as being an essential book for surveyors it will also be of considerable interest to solicitors and estate agents, particularly those based in Scotland. The authors, experienced Chartered Surveyors, have written extensively on the diagnosis of defects in dwellings and are joint authors of the successful EG Books publication The Repair and Maintenance of Houses, 2nd edn.
