Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the most widely accessible building materials available to man, natural stone has been in extensive use for many centuries. It is a significant component, andin places the only one, of man-made structures the world over, and its properties, applications, and behavior over long periods of time constitute a story that is almost unbelievably complex. Important elements of the story are described and interrelated in this volume. That the exposed parts of the earth's crust provide a considerable variety of rock types is evident to any thoughtful observer. To the geologist falls the task of characterizing and explaining this variety, but many other kinds of specialists who are involved in the commercial use of stone also have an essential stake in the matter. From quarryman to mason, from architect to structural engineer, and certainly from purchaser to future observer, there is compelling interest in the nature, appearance, and durability of one stone as compared with another, or of stone as compared with some other material. Small wonder, then, that much has been written on the subject, and that numerous aspects of commercial stone and its properlies have appealed to a host of investigators. Research in this area also has been an official concern of many organizations, which in the United States include the American Society for Testing and Materials, the National Bureau of Standards, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Geological Survey, and several state agencies.

Book excerpt: Like Moses delivering forth the Ten Commandments, Chunklet magazine presents you with The Rock Bible—the complete rules for living an authentic life of rock ’n’ roll. Here are hundreds of wise and witty guidelines for Drummers: “If you’re one of those drummers who sets up at the front of the stage, back the hell up. You are the goalies of rock; play your position.” Singers: “When you feel like stage-diving, first make sure the people in the front like your music enough to catch you.” Guitarists: “No one’s looking at your guitar strap. Don’t ever spend more than the cost of an average meal on something that can be replaced by a particularly hearty piece of string.” Keyboardists: “There’s only one person who will look more ridiculous and offensive in leather pants than the lead singer: the keyboard player.” Onstage Antics: “Being wasted onstage works for only about 5 percent of bands, and yours isn’t one of them.” Fans: “Fans that dress like the band are just asking to be pummeled. If you want to be in the band that badly, you might as well bring your gear to the show and play along from the audience.” And unholy words on much, much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is vital for understanding the origin of deep-water sandstones, emphasizing sandy-mass transport deposits (SMTDs) and bottom-current reworked sands (BCRSs) in petroleum reservoirs. This cutting-edge perspective, a pragmatic alternative to the conventional turbidite concepts, is crucial because the turbidite paradigm is built on a dubious foundation without empirical data on sandy turbidity currents in modern oceans. In the absence of evidence for sandy turbidity currents in natural environments, elegant theoretical models and experimental observations of turbidity currents are irrelevant substitutes for explaining the origin of sandy deposits as "turbidites." In documenting modern and ancient SMTDs (sandy slides, sandy slumps, and sandy debrites) and BCRSs (deposits of thermohaline [contour] currents, wind-driven currents, and tidal currents), the author describes and interprets core and outcrop (1:20 to 1:50 scale) from 35 case studies worldwide (which include 32 petroleum reservoirs), totaling more than 10,000 m in cumulative thickness, carried out during the past 36 years (1974-2010). The book dispels myths about the importance of sea level lowstand and provides much-needed clarity on the triggering of sediment failures by earthquakes, meteorite impacts, tsunamis, and cyclones with implications for the distribution of deep-water sandstone petroleum reservoirs. - Promotes pragmatic interpretation of deep-water sands using alternative possibilities - Validates the economic importance of SMTDs and BCRS in deep-water exploration and production - Rich in empirical data and timely new perspectives
