Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomechanics aims to explain the mechanics oflife and living. From molecules to organisms, everything must obey the laws of mechanics. Clarification of mechanics clarifies many things. Biomechanics helps us to appreciate life. It sensitizes us to observe nature. It is a tool for design and invention of devices to improve the quality of life. It is a useful tool, a simple tool, a valuable tool, an unavoidable tool. It is a necessary part of biology and engineering. The method of biomechanics is the method of engineering, which consists of observation, experimentation, theorization, validation, and application. To understand any object, we must know its geometry and materials of construc tion, the mechanical properties of the materials involved, the governing natural laws, the mathematical formulation of specific problems and their solutions, and the results of validation. Once understood, one goes on to develop applications. In my plan to present an outline of biomechanics, I followed the engineering approach and used three volumes. In the first volume, Biomechanics: Mechanical Properties of Living Tissues, the geometrical struc ture and the rheological properties of various materials, tissues, and organs are presented. In the second volume, Biodynamics: Circulation, the physiology of blood circulation is analyzed by the engineering method.

Book excerpt: The Boundary Element Method (BEM) has become established as an effective tool for the solutions of problems in engineering science. The salient features of the BEM have been well documented in the open literature and therefore will not be elaborated here. The BEM research has progressed rapidly, especially in the past decade and continues to evolve worldwide. This Symposium was organized to provide an international forum for presentation of current research in BEM for linear and nonlinear problems in solid and fluid mechanics and related areas. To this end, papers on the following topics were included: rotary wing aerodynamics, unsteady aerodynamics, design and optimization, elasticity, elasto dynamics and elastoplasticity, fracture mechanics, acoustics, diffusion and wave motion, thermal analysis, mathematical aspects and boundary/finite element coupled methods. A special session was devoted to parallel/vector supercomputing with emphasis on mas sive parallelism. This Symposium was sponsored by United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) , NASA Langley Research Center, and the International Association of Boundary Ele ment Methods (lAB EM) . We thank the UTRC management for their permission to host this Symposium. In particular, we thank Dr. Arthur S. Kesten and Mr. Robert E. Olson for their encouragement and support. We gratefully acknowledge the support of Dr. E. Carson Yates, Jr. of NASA Langley, Prof. Luigi Morino, Dr. Thomas A.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation for writing aseries ofbooks on biomechanics is to bring this rapidly developing subject to students of bioengineering, physiology, and mechanics. In the last decade biomechanics has become a recognized disci pline offered in virtually all universities. Yet there is no adequate textbook for instruction; neither is there a treatise with sufficiently broad coverage. A few books bearing the title of biomechanics are too elementary, others are too specialized. I have long feIt a need for a set of books that will inform students of the physiological and medical applications of biomechanics, and at the same time develop their training in mechanics. We cannot assume that all students come to biomechanics already fully trained in fluid and solid mechanics; their knowledge in these subjects has to be developed as the course proceeds. The scheme adopted in the present series is as follows. First, some basic training in mechanics, to a level about equivalent to the first seven chapters of the author's A First Course in Continuum Mechanics (Prentice-Hall,lnc. 1977), is assumed. We then present some essential parts of biomechanics from the point of view of bioengineering, physiology, and medical applications. In the meantime, mechanics is developed through a sequence of problems and examples. The main text reads like physiology, while the exercises are planned like a mechanics textbook. The instructor may fil1 a dual role: teaching an essential branch of life science, and gradually developing the student's knowledge in mechanics.

Book excerpt: Summary: Ailerons having a beveled trailing edge and a blunt-nose overhand of 35 percent aileron chord on an NACA 66(215)-216 airfoil have been tested in the two-dimensional-flow test section of the Langley stability tunnel. Five configurations of the model were tested with various modifications of the aileron nose and adjacent airfoil contour to determine the effect of these modifications on the lift and aileron hinge-moment characteristics. The results indicated that making the nose of the aileron more elliptical decreased the balance of hinge moments at small aileron angels and increased the balance of hinge moments at large aileron angles. The lift coefficients, especially at large aileron angles, were increased by this modification. Flaring the airfoil contour near the aileron nose had an effect on the hinge moments for small aileron angles similar to the effect of making the aileron nose less blunt, whereas rounding the airfoil contour had an effect similar to making the aileron nose more blunt. Flaring the airfoil contour caused a decrease in the lift resulting from aileron deflection. The effects of airfoil-contour changes were small at large aileron angles. Comparison with other data indicated that, for small aileron angels, the increments of hinge-moment coefficient resulting from a beveled trailing edge and a blunt-nose overhang were additive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure-distribution tests have been made in the NACA 4- by 6-foot vertical tunnel of a plain flap with interchangeable beveled trailing edges on an NACA 0009 airfoil. The flap chord was 30 percent of the airfoil chord and the bevel chords were 15 and 20 percent of the flap chord. The 15-percent bevel was tested with the bevel corner faired with both large and small radii. The purpose of these tests was to supply pressure-distribution data that may be used for structural and aerodynamic design of the horizontal and vertical tail surfaces.
