Book excerpt: Where the lower reaches of the rivers Rijn, Maas and Schelde have passed through the Northwest-European plain to finally flow out into the North Sea, a unique country of towns had come about during the Late Middle Ages. Since then, due to its natural and central location, this country, the Netherlands, has turned into a true crossroads of European trade connections between east and west, north and south. A highly urbanised country emerged and as the urban economies prospered they have had a great impact on the surrounding countryside. This in turn has affected the rural communities and has stimulated all kinds of agrarian activities. Highly productive agribusiness complexes have been the result. Today experts rank Dutch agriculture and horticulture as one of the most productive in the world. Milk production per cow and arable farming and horticulture, productivity per man-hour is amongst the highest known. This book is meant to give an overview of the historical processes of five centuries of farming and it makes clear that the old farming society was only seemingly static. This account of Dutch agricultural history demonstrates how Dutch farmers and horticulturist have always been keen on resetting their aims when the ever changing economic environment induced them to do so.

Book excerpt: *Goodreads Choice Award Winner for Best Science & Technology Book of the Year* In this scientifically informed account of the changes occurring in the world over the last century, award-winning broadcaster and natural historian shares a lifetime of wisdom and a hopeful vision for the future. See the world. Then make it better. I am 93. I've had an extraordinary life. It's only now that I appreciate how extraordinary. As a young man, I felt I was out there in the wild, experiencing the untouched natural world - but it was an illusion. The tragedy of our time has been happening all around us, barely noticeable from day to day -- the loss of our planet's wild places, its biodiversity. I have been witness to this decline. A Life on Our Planet is my witness statement, and my vision for the future. It is the story of how we came to make this, our greatest mistake -- and how, if we act now, we can yet put it right. We have one final chance to create the perfect home for ourselves and restore the wonderful world we inherited. All we need is the will to do so.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study addressed the question of future food challenges and how these may play out. Part of the analysis focused on the question as to how we may enhance our understanding of the effects of climate change, increased population growth and rising incomes worldwide on future food systems. The worldwide food system is vulnerable to many influences. The approach used in this study focused on the most significant possible influencers of drivers, or the elements having the most effect on how drivers will develop. This approach was employed due to our understanding that the system’s complexity cannot be reduced to the drivers alone. The applied research method however allows us to look at the different aspects while recognizing their interlinkages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is representative of a fraction of what we have learned over the years in various countries around the world. We study various things related to human resource development in various countries to understand the problems, solutions, and forms of perfect education for our students. We also study issues related to food because food has an important relationship with health, namely adequate nutrition and human energy sources. Health and including food are important factors in building human capital. We found many food problems in various countries including developed countries. A very popular issue related to labor. This book presents a small part of our study in 22 countries on 5 continents in this book we focus on looking globally to see comparisons between countries by vectoring human variables and the performance of the agricultural industry for each country. We conduct qualitative studies to understand the problems in each country we visit and study so that we can provide solutions or suggestions that might be a solution for the country where we live and study. Sometimes the solution is a collaboration between countries. Because we find that every country, whether developed or developing country, has strengths and weaknesses and has the potential for beneficial collaboration. To understand globally and comprehensively or in aggregate, we use quantitative studies with official data from the world bank. Both qualitative and quantitative have their own strengths and weaknesses because they have different points of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until about 1970, Western Europe was regarded as the great food-importing region of the world. Over the next 15 years it also became a major food exporter. This study, originally published in 1985, analyses the expansionary policies of individual nations, as well as those of the Community itself, which have helped produce this momentous reversal of Western Europe’s traditional role. The phenomenon in the international food market is reviewed within the context of the economic and political forces responsible for changes in Western European agriculture during the late 20th Century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years before the Second World War agriculture in most European states was carried out on peasant or small family farms using technologies that relied mainly on organic inputs and local knowledge and skills, supplying products into a market that was partly local or national, partly international. The war applied a profound shock to this system. In some countries farms became battlefields, causing the extensive destruction of buildings, crops and livestock. In others, farmers had to respond to calls from the state for increased production to cope with the effects of wartime disruption of international trade. By the end of the war food was rationed when it was obtainable at all. Only fifteen years later the erstwhile enemies were planning ways of bringing about a single agricultural market across much of continental western Europe, as farmers mechanised, motorized, shed labour, invested capital, and adopted new technologies to increase output. This volume brings together scholars working on this period of dramatic technical, commercial and political change in agriculture, from the end of the Second World War to the emergence of the Common Agricultural Policy in the early 1960s. Their work is structured around four themes: the changes in the international political order within which agriculture operated; the emergence of a range of different market regulation schemes that preceded the CAP; changes in technology and the extent to which they were promoted by state policy; and the impact of these political and technical changes on rural societies in western Europe.
