Focusing on 445 works by such masters as Hendrick Avercamp, Balthasar van der Ast, Hendrick ter Brugghen, and Esaias van de Velde, Volume I presents the work of some 100 painters who together provide a comprehensive overview of the dawn of 17th-century Dutch art. An up-to-date biography is provided for each artist as is the complete known provenance for each painting. The paintings have been fully researched and described, and all are reproduced in full color. An appendix of photographed signatures is also included. Book excerpt: "Paintings from the Dutch Golden Age have been praised for many years, but it took a long time before such praise was extended to history paintings. Today, these paintings by Rembrandt, Goltzius, Lastman, Ter Brugghen and De Lairesse are truly considered part of the seventeenth-century canon. The works showing biblical and mythological images are regarded as highly as their contemporary still lives, landscapes and genre scenes. Stories in Gilded Frames is the first coherent overview of history paintings. History painters tell tales using paint and brush and this book highlights one hundred paintings by the most important representatives of the genre. The emphasis is placed on the way the painters bring their topics out into the open. The reader is invited to consider the choices the artists made"--Back cover.

Book Synopsis The Visible and the Invisible by : Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat

This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses the scientific debates on Rembrandt, Metsu, Vermeer, and Hoogstraten that are currently taking place in art history and cultural studies. These focus mainly on the representation of gender difference, the relationship between text and image, and the emotional discourse. They are also an appeal for art history as a form of cultural studies that analyses the semantic potential of art within discursive and social contemporary practices. Dutch painting of the seventeenth century reflects its relationship to visible reality. It deals with ambiguities and contradictions. As an avant-garde artistic media, it also contributes to the emergence of a subjectivity towards the modern “bourgeois”. It discards subject matter from its traditional fixation with iconology and evokes different imaginations and semantizations - aspects that have not been sufficiently taken into account in previous research. The book is to be understood as an appeal for art history as a form of cultural science that analyses the semantic potential of art within discursive and social contemporary practices, and, at the same time, demonstrates its relevance today. Works by Rembrandt, Metsu, Vermeer, Hoogstraten, and others serve as exemplary case studies for addressing current debates in art history and cultural studies, such as representation of gender difference, relationship between text and image, and emotional discourse.
