Book excerpt: When art dealer Jan Six saw the 'Portrait of a Young Gentleman' in a Christie?s auction catalogue, he instantly knew that it could not possibly be a work that had been attributed to ?the circle of Rembrandt?, but that the master must have painted it himself. The last time a hitherto unknown painting by Rembrandt was discovered was in 1974, when 'The Baptism of the Eunuch' came to light. But how does one convince the world of such a discovery? Does something like an absolute eye exist? And how special is such a painting in comparison to all the other known works by the most famous Dutch painter? In this book Jan Six takes the reader on a compelling and erudite journey, all about his exciting discovery and a boy?s dream come true, showing the 'Portrait of a Young Gentleman' through the eyes of his discoverer. 0Jan Six (1978) studied art history and worked at Sotheby?s London and in Amsterdam as head of the Old Master Paintings department. Since 2008 he operates as an art dealer and runs his own gallery, specialised in Dutch and Flemish Old Master Paintings and Drawings.

Book excerpt: In 'The Russian Passion for Dutch Painting of the Golden Age' Irina Sokolova presents the collection of paintings created by Pyotr Petrovich Semenov-Tyan-Shansky (1827–1914), an outstanding scholar and Russian statesman during the era of liberal reforms in Russia. Not only did this man of great erudition assemble a unique body of more than 700 works by Dutch and Flemish masters, but he pushed hard to ensure that it entered the Imperial Hermitage in 1914. His activities as a collector have until recently remained largely unknown. For the first time in English, this book unfolds the history of Semenov’s gallery against the background of cultural and artistic life in St Petersburg and the close ties between Russian and European connoisseurs of his time.00About this new series: This peer reviewed book series will focus on scholarly publications (monographs, edited volumes, catalogues) on visual arts in the Netherlands up to 1900.0It is closely related to the journal 'Oud Holland, Quarterly for Dutch Art History', the oldest surviving art historical journal in the world. The book series is a platform for larger studies on topics relevant for the journal. Books are published in English. The series editor is R.E.O. Ekkart.0.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important masterpieces in museum collections, such as the paintings by Rembrandt, often have the dubious honor of having undergone numerous conservation treatments in the past. Because of the significance of the paintings, these treatments are generally well documented. For example, The Anatomy Lesson of Dt Nicolaes Tulp has undergone 23 documented treatments, while those of The Night Watch amount to 25. Rembrandt's paintings are found in major collections all over the world. Every country has its own traditions, developments and approaches to conservation with important restorers having played a key role in the treatment and appearance of Rembrandt paintings. In Rembrandt Conservation Histories, experts address aspects relating to the conservation history of paintings by Rembrandt and other 17th-century Dutch masters, raising awareness of how the appearance and condition of paintings by Rembrandt can be explained in part by their treatment history.

Book excerpt: Attributing old master paintings is one of the most demanding tasks of the art historian. The stakes can be high, especially when the work in question might indeed be the hand of a great master. The difference in price between an authentic work and one 'in the manner of' a well-known artist can add up to several million dollars. In addition to the fi nancial consequences, a revised attribution can also have dramatic consequences for our understanding of art history. In her fascinating account of connoisseurship in action, Tummers highlights issues regarding the attribution of seventheenth-century Dutch and Flemish art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings were aesthetic, intellectual, and economic touchstones in the Parisian art world of the Revolutionary era, but their importance within this framework, while frequently acknowledged, never attracted much subsequent attention. Darius A. Spieth’s inquiry into Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art reveals the dominance of “Golden Age” pictures in the artistic discourse and sales transactions before, during, and after the French Revolution. A broadly based statistical investigation, undertaken as part of this study, shows that the upheaval reduced prices for Netherlandish paintings by about 55% compared to the Old Regime, and that it took until after the July Revolution of 1830 for art prices to return where they stood before 1789.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.
