Book excerpt: Preservation of plant germplasm resources is vitally important for mankind to supply food and product security in the globalization and technological advances of the 21st century. Mankind preserved a wealth of available genetic resources of many plant species worldwide. One of the such worldwide plant germplasm resources is available for cotton, a unique natural fiber producing cash crop for mankind. Worldwide cotton germplasm collections exist in Australia, Brazil, China, India, France, Pakistan, Turkey, Russia, United States of America, and Uzbekistan. The objective of World Cotton Germplasm Resources book is to present readers with updated information on existing cotton germplasm resources, highlighting detailed inventory, description, storage conditions, characterization and utilization as well as challenges and perspectives. This book should be a comprehensive encyclopedic reading source for plant research community and students to gather important information on worldwide cotton germplasm resources.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An apparent stagnation of fiber quality improvement in Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) is likely due to a limited priority by breeders to improve fiber quality, exacerbated by limited genetic diversity for fiber quality within G. hirsutum. Increasing competition from man-made fibers such as polyester has put additional impetus for improvement of cotton fiber quality. Extensive genetic resources exist, however, from which valuable alleles for fiber quality can be mined. In addition to divergent, unadapted, or even wild G. hirsutum, valuable QTLs have been identified in other related species within the Gossypium genus. These interspecific sources of fiber quality represent an underutilized resource within the available gene pool of G. hirsutum. While numerous QTL have been mapped and identified in interspecific populations or introgression lines, few have been verified or have progressed to the point of introgression into adapted material. This dissertation seeks to address some of these topics by examining QTL identified from interspecific sources, their interaction with elite, divergent genetic backgrounds, their genotype by environment interactions, and their application in cotton improvement.

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book provides a fresh, updated and science-based perspective on the current status and prospects of the diverse array of topics related to the potato, and was written by distinguished scientists with hands-on global experience in research aspects related to potato. The potato is the third most important global food crop in terms of consumption. Being the only vegetatively propagated species among the world’s main five staple crops creates both issues and opportunities for the potato: on the one hand, this constrains the speed of its geographic expansion and its options for international commercialization and distribution when compared with commodity crops such as maize, wheat or rice. On the other, it provides an effective insulation against speculation and unforeseen spikes in commodity prices, since the potato does not represent a good traded on global markets. These two factors highlight the underappreciated and underrated role of the potato as a dependable nutrition security crop, one that can mitigate turmoil in world food supply and demand and political instability in some developing countries. Increasingly, the global role of the potato has expanded from a profitable crop in developing countries to a crop providing income and nutrition security in developing ones. This book will appeal to academics and students of crop sciences, but also policy makers and other stakeholders involved in the potato and its contribution to humankind’s food security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While preparing the first edition of this textbook I attended an extension short course on writing agricultural publications. The message I remember was "select your audience and write to it. " There has never been any doubt about the audience for which this textbook was written, the introductory course in crop breeding. In addition, it has become a widely used reference for the graduate plant-breeding student and the practicing plant breeder. In its prepa ration, particular attention has been given to advances in plant-breeding theo ry and their utility in plant-breeding practice. The blend of the theoretical with the practical has set this book apart from other plant-breeding textbooks. The basic structure and the objectives of the earlier editions remain un changed. These objectives are (1) to review essential features of plant re production, Mendelian genetic principles, and related genetic developments applicable in plant-breeding practice; (2) to describe and evaluate established and new plant-breeding procedures and techniques, and (3) to discuss plant breeding objectives with emphasis on the importance of proper choice of objec tive for achieving success in variety development. Because plant-breeding activities are normally organized around specific crops, there are chapters describing breeding procedures and objectives for the major crop plants; the crops were chosen for their economic importance or diversity in breeding sys tems. These chapters provide a broad overview of the kinds of problems with which the breeder must cope.

It is aimed at plant breeders, social scientists, students and practitioners interested in learning more about its use, with the hope that they all will find a common ground to discuss ways in which plant breeding can be beneficial to all and can contribute to alleviate poverty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the previously neglected interface between the conservation of plant genetic resources and their utilization. Only through utilization can the potential value of conserved genetic resources be realized. However, as this book shows, much conserved germplasm has to be subjected to long-term pre-breeding and genetic enhancement before it can be used in plant breeding programs. The authors explore the rationale and approaches for such pre-breeding efforts as the basis for broadening the genetic bases of crop production. Examples from a range of major food crops are presented and issues analyzed by leading authorities from around the world.
