Book excerpt: Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) have been widely used as externally epoxy-bonded reinforcement for repair and retrofit of existing concrete structures. As the use of CFRP in construction increases, it is essential to consider the long term behavior. In this study, concrete specimens with externally bonded CFRP composite systems were exposed to various accelerated ageing environments: different elevated temperature water immersion, varying relative humidity exposure, real-time solar exposure, pressurized hygrothermal exposure, and fatigue loading. Three-point loading test and direct tension test were used to evaluate the flexural and tensile strength of CFRP specimens. This research recommends that the durability strength reduction factor be defined as the ratio of the flexural strength of a test specimen after exposure for 60 days at 60C to the strength of a control specimen at the initiation of exposure. Test specimens, exposure environments, testing procedures, and field application environments are selected to assure uniform reporting, testing and application of durability strength reduction factors. Two exposure environments are recommended for design, wet and air. Water can diffuse through concrete and accumulate on the epoxy/concrete interface in a wet environment and is the default condition for design. An air environment precludes water accumulation but requires engineering design and validation to guarantee compliance. The resulting durability strength reduction factor may be used to (a) calculate the reduced strength for environmental exposure, (b) qualify a specific CFRP system, (c) compare durability reduction factors to those provided by system suppliers, and (d) confirm compliance with project specifications.

Book excerpt: High strength fibre composites (FRPs) have been used with civil structures since the 1980s, mostly in the repair, strengthening and retrofitting of concrete structures. This has attracted considerable research, and the industry has expanded exponentially in the last decade. Design guidelines have been developed by professional organizations in a number of countries including USA, Japan, Europe and China, but until now designers have had no publication which provides practical guidance or accessible coverage of the fundamentals. This book fills this void. It deals with the fundamentals of composites, and basic design principles, and provides step-by-step guidelines for design. Its main theme is the repair and retrofit of un-reinforced, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures using carbon, glass and other high strength fibre composites. In the case of beams, the focus is on their strengthening for flexure and shear or their stiffening. The main interest with columns is the improvement of their ductility; and both strengthening and ductility improvement of un-reinforced structures are covered. Methods for evaluating the strengthened structures are presented. Step by step procedures are set out, including flow charts, for the various structural components, and design examples and practice problems are used to illustrate. As infrastructure ages worldwide, and its demolition and replacement becomes less of an option, the need for repair and retrofit of existing facilities will increase. Besides its audience of design professionals, this book suits graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

Book excerpt: Many bridges are handling heavier loads than those expected at design, making it increasingly necessary to strengthen existing members or conduct repairs on damaged structural members. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) materials have been broadly used to repair and strengthen reinforced concrete structures. Using CFRP materials as the strengthening material is an excellent solution because of their mechanical properties. CFRP has properties of high strength, corrosion resistance, and light weight. CFRP materials are being widely used for shear and flexural strengthening. Most studies have focused on uni-directional layout of CFRP strips in high shear regions of beams. Recent shear tests on full-scale I-girders have shown that the use of bi-directional CFRP layouts with CFRP anchors led to much higher shear strength increases than when using uni-directional layouts. The objective of the study is to determine the mechanism that governs shear strengthening of bridge girders using bi-directional CFRP and, in doing so, demonstrate the feasibility of using bi-directional CFRP for shear strengthening of large bridge I- and U-beams. Small-scale panel tests have been conducted to investigate parameters that influence the shear strength provided by bi-directional CFRP layouts. Panels were tested under compressive forces to simulate the compression struts that develop in the webs of I-beams. The applied loads generated bottle-shaped compressive struts. CFRP anchors were used to prevent early failure due to CFRP strip delamination from the panel surface. The panels, while not fully reproducing the boundary condition of girder webs, were tested ahead of full-scale girders to investigate a wide range of parameters in a cost-effective manner. The variables considered include the amount of CFRP and steel reinforcement, the inclination of CFRP fibers, and the layout and spacing of CFRP strips. The panel tests provide qualitative comparisons between the influence of the various parameters. The relative strength contributions of CFRP strips, steel stirrups, and concrete were evaluated.

Book excerpt: The Concrete Solutions series of International Conferences on Concrete Repair began in 2003, with a conference held in St. Malo, France in association with INSA Rennes, followed by the second conference in 2006 ( with INSA again, at St. Malo, France), and the third conference in 2009 (in Padova and Venice, in association with the University of Padova). Now in 2011, the event is being held in Dresden in Germany and has brought together some 112 papers from 33 countries. Whereas electrochemical repair tended to dominate the papers in earlier years, new developments in structural strengthening with composites have been an increasingly important topic, with a quarter of the papers now focusing on this area. New techniques involving Near Surface Mounted (NSM) carbon fibre rods, strain hardening composites, and new techniques involving the well established carbon fibre and polyimide wrapping and strengthening systems are presented. Seventeen papers concentrate on case studies which are all-important in such conferences, to learn about what works (and what doesn’t work) on real structures. Thirteen papers are devoted to new developments in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Other topics include service life modelling, fire damage, surface protection methods and coatings, patch repair, general repair techniques and whole life costing. This book is essential reading for anyone engaged in the concrete repair field, from engineers, to academics and students and also to clients, who, as the end user, are ultimately responsible for funding these projects and making those difficult decisions about which system or method to use.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of FRP materials in strengthening and repairing of reinforced concrete (RC) structures has increased in the past two decades. Recently, FRP materials have become one of the most used materials in rehabilitation engineering. For seismic retrofitting of RC structures, usually the process involves strengthening or repairing the vertical support elements of the buildings or bridges. Although glass FRP (GFRP) and basalt FRP (BFRP) rods have been used in flexural strengthening of RC columns, NSM-CFRP rods have not been used yet. In addition, studies in the use of CFRP ropes in flexural strengthening or repairing of RC columns are not available. To address these gaps, an experimental investigation was conducted on the use of CFRP materials in strengthening and repairing RC columns. The investigation consisted of three main parts. The three parts focused on strengthening and repairing slender RC columns using CFRP materials. The first part of the investigation focused on the use of CFRP sheets, rods, and ropes in flexural strengthening of RC columns. The results showed that both EB and NSM techniques can effectively be used in strengthening slender RC columns. In addition, CFRP ropes are very effective in strengthening RC columns. Finally, a theoretical model was created to predict the load-displacement response of RC columns strengthened with EB-CFRP sheets and NSM-CFRP rods and ropes. The theoretical results showed good agreement with the experimental results. The second part of the investigation focused on the use of CFRP sheets and ropes in repairing damaged RC columns. Recently, RC columns have been upgraded and strengthened with FRP confinement all around the globe. Future cases of repair will likely encounter RC columns that were strengthened previously with FRP confinement. However, studies on repairing damaged columns that were enhanced by confinement before damage are not currently available. Moreover, there is a vital need for an emergency repair technique that can be used to rapidly repair damaged columns of essential structures after a seismic event. In this study, the time required to complete the repair was a key factor to propose a rapid CFRP-based repair technique. Test results showed that the proposed repair technique was effective not only by restoring the original strength, but also by improving the strength significantly. Moreover, the measured and idealized load-displacement response showed that the ductility of the repaired column was reasonably sufficient. The proposed technique appears promising and may be considered as a permanent repair technique. The third part of the investigation focused on the tensile strength of CFRP ropes anchored to concrete using chemical epoxy. One of the major problems with using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) in strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures is premature debonding of FRP. Anchoring FRP materials to concrete has become associated with most of the strengthening techniques. In the present study, FRP anchors were made from carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) ropes and had long embedment to be used for flexural strengthening of RC columns. Test results showed that the pullout strength of CFRP anchors increased with the increase in embedment length, and no significant effect of the hole diameter on the pullout strength was observed. However, the bond strength increased with decreasing embedment length and hole diameter. For shorter embedment lengths, the distribution of the bond stress along the length of the anchor is expected to be more uniform than that of anchors with longer embedment lengths. The average bond stress (strength) is calculated by dividing the maximum pullout force by the embedment length. Therefore, increasing the embedment length without significant improvement in the pullout load results in lower bond strength. The observed pullout results and failure modes were compared to the predictions using available models. Finally, a modified model was proposed to predict the pullout strength of CFRP rope anchors.
