Book excerpt: New U.S. Air Force durability design philosophies are aimed at minimizing evolution and growth of structural cracks to sizes affecting readiness and life cycle repair costs. Durability design requires attention to material quality and manufacturing quality, since both can be sources of in-service cracking problems. Improvement in the quality of Al-Zn-Cu-Mg, 7050 alloy, thick plate through reductions in microporosity has been correlated with increased smooth-coupon fatigue lives. Consequently, in commercial production, the smooth fatigue test is now employed as a lot release test to warrant initial metal quality. This work is aimed at translating results of smooth fatigue quality-screening tests to aircraft component performance in the context of new durability methodologies. For this purpose, a fracture mechanics analysis is used to convert the smooth coupon lifetimes to an equivalent initial flaw size (EIFS) distribution, which then becomes the starting point for probabilistic crack growth assessment in a component. The EIFS distribution back-extrapolated from life data is shown to be in good agreement with the distribution of crack initiating microflaws determined by more labor-intensive post-test fractography. Consequently, the fracture mechanics back-calculation enables cost-effective conversion of coupon lifetimes, a simple measurement, into a "material characteristic," initial flaw size population, which can then be utilized analytically for durability design trade studies. A hypothetical component study performed in this manner for materials of varying initial quality is used to demonstrate how material quality differentiated at the coupon level can be translated into a performance advantage under representative in-service loading conditions.

Book excerpt: The overall goal of vehicle design is to make a robust and reliable product that meets the demands of the customers and this book treats the topic of analysing and describing customer loads with respect to durability. Guide to Load Analysis for Vehicle and Durability Engineering supplies a variety of methods for load analysis and also explains their proper use in view of the vehicle design process. In Part I, Overview, there are two chapters presenting the scope of the book as well as providing an introduction to the subject. Part II, Methods for Load Analysis, describes useful methods and indicates how and when they should be used. Part III, Load Analysis in view of the Vehicle Design Process, offers strategies for the evaluation of customer loads, in particular characterization of customer populations, which leads to the derivation of design loads, and finally to the verification of systems and components. Key features: • Is a comprehensive collection of methods for load analysis, vehicle dynamics and statistics • Combines standard load data analysis methods with statistical aspects on deriving test loads from surveys of customer usage • Sets the methods used in the framework of system dynamics and response, and derives recommendations for the application of methods in engineering practice • Presents a reliability design methodology based on statistical evaluation of component strength and customers loads • Includes case studies and illustrative examples that translate the theory into engineering practice Developed in cooperation with six European truck manufacturers (DAF, Daimler, Iveco, MAN, Scania and Volvo) to meet the needs of industry, Guide to Load Analysis for Vehicle and Durability Engineering provides an understanding of the current methods in load analysis and will inspire the incorporation of new techniques in the design and test processes.

Book excerpt: This work gives an overview of significant research from recent years concerning performance-based design and quality control for concrete durability and its implementation. In engineering practice, performance approaches are often still used in combination with prescriptive requirements. This is largely because, for most durability test methods, sufficient practical experience still has to be gained before engineers and owners are prepared to fully rely on them. This book, compiled by RILEM TC 230-PSC, is intended to assist efforts to successfully build the foundation for the full implementation of performance-based approaches through the exchange of relevant knowledge and experience between researchers and practitioners worldwide.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Fracture Mechanics Technology Applied to Material Evaluation and Structure Design was held in Melbourne, Australia, from August 10 to 13, 1982. It was sponsored jointly by the Australian Fracture Group and Institute of Fracture and Solid Mechanics at Lehigh University. Pro fessor G. C. Sih of Lehigh University, Drs. N. E. Ryan and R. Jones of Aeronau tical Research Laboratories served as Co-Chairmen. They initiated the organiza tion of this international event to provide an opportunity for the practitioners, engineers and interested individuals to present and discuss recent advances in the evaluation of material and structure damage originating from defects or cracks. Particular emphases were placed on applying the fracture mechanics tech nology for assessing interactions between material properties, design and opera tional requirements. It is timely to hold such a Conference in Australia as she embarks on technology extensive industries where safeguarding structures from pre mature and unexpected failure is essential from both the technical and economical points. view The application of system-type approach to failure control owes much of its success to fracture mechanics. It is now generally accepted that the discipline, when properly implemented, provides a sound engineering basis for accounting in teractions between material properties, design, fabrication, inspection and op erational requirements. The approach offers effective solutions for design and maintenance of large-scale energy generation plants, mining machineries, oil ex ploration and retrieval equipments, land, sea and air transport vehicles.

Book excerpt: Characterisation of the shallow subsurface provides civil, geotechnical and environmental applications with precise definitions of geomechanical and geohydrological properties. Over the past decade, the rapid pace of technological innovation has outstripped the ability of many researchers and potential users to evaluate and adopt promising new characterisation methods. Modern information technologies and information management concepts provide the basis of new paradigms and applications. This book defines future research needs for geological modelling and ground characterisation, including better dialogue between data provides and users and faster, better and less expensive methods for the creation and dissemination of subsurface characterisations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With continuous improvement (kaizen) and Total Quality Control (TQC) becoming increasingly important to world class companies, there's an urgent need to build quality into every management decision. The tools presented in this book allow you to do just that. They represent the most important advance in quality deployment and project management in recent years. Unlike the seven traditional QC tools, which measure quality problems that already exist and are used by quality circles, these seven new QC tools make it possible for managers to plan wide-ranging and detailed TQC objectives throughout the entire organization. These tools, some borrowed from other disciplines and others developed specifically for quality management, include the relations diagram, the KJ method (affinity diagram), the systematic diagram, the matrix diagram, matrix data analysis, the process decision program chart (PDPC), and the arrow diagram. Together they will help you to: Expand the scope of quality efforts company-wide. Set up and manage the systems necessary to resolve major quality problems. Anticipate potential quality problems and actually eliminate defects before they happen. Never before available in English, Management for Quality Improvement is absolutely essential reading if you are in any area of project management, quality assurance, MIS, or TQC.
