This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Durability of Culverts and Special Coatings is intended to provide up-to-date storm drain and culvert material selection methods and techniques to assist the highway engineer in designing culverts. While the program was to consider a variety of materials, the predominant focus was on Aluminized Type 2 corrugated steel pipe (CSP) and its performance versus galvanized CSP. This report is divided into two main sections-field investigation and literature review. The field investigation presents the results of a field evaluation of 32 pipes and their performance relative to that reported in FHWA-FLP-91-006, Durability of Special Coatings for Corrugated Steel Pipe. The present report also includes a review of previous research areas to evaluate conclusions and the utility of existing culvert life prediction methods. The literature review presents a discussion of the various factors affecting culvert durability and its prediction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature review and field studies portion of this investigation were completed by August 1995. Both revealed myriad factors affecting culvert durability. The literature review considered more than 140 research papers on or relating to the topic of culvert durability. Of these papers, roughly 60 were considered further and are included in an annotated bibliography. Many references are made in the report to past research efforts and conclusions from these papers. Summaries of these conclusions include laboratory and field research on various culvert materials and durability methods. These summaries are included to help in both the selection of pipe material and in the use of durability prediction methods. Those papers presenting field data similar to that used in the present study (including pit depth, age, and original thickness) were consolidated into a database of information on more than 240 galvanized culverts. The focus of field studies conducted during this investigation centered on the performance of Aluminized Type 2 culverts. Of the 32 culverts inspected during this investigation, 21 culverts were part of a previous Federal Highway Administration study. These culverts were located in Alabama and Oregon. Eight culverts at five sites in Maine were added with the expansion of these field studies. In situ field measurements of pH and resistivity were taken at each culvert. The abrasive situation at each culvert was characterized, including slope, flow velocity, and abrasive material. Each culvert was photo-documented and many were videotaped for future reference. Coupon samples were taken at each location for pit-depth analysis. Soil samples were removed for laboratory resistivity measurements. Conclusions from past research, the database, and present field studies have been used to evaluate current durability prediction methods. Advantages and disadvantages of various culvert materials are discussed, with correlations drawn from the literature review and field studies.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two studies were conducted by KDOT in the 1980s to evaluate the performance of corrugated metal pipe (CMP) after a 1974 pipe policy change. This report is a follow-up study to evaluate the impact of the study initiated in 1989 and another pipe policy change in 2001. A total of 81 CMPs were inspected in Districts One, Three, and Four; 41 of these CMP were also surveyed in 1989. The inspection methodology for each CMP included visual inspection, general notes on flow conditions in and around the CMP, any observations of structural compromise, GPS coordinates, and photographs of the CMP. Visual inspections included assessing the CMP at the crown, invert, interior sides, and exterior on both ends. The deterioration rates of all CMP were determined. The findings support previous results that indicated increased deterioration rates following the 1974 policy change and showed reduced deterioration rates since the 1989 study. Furthermore, the 2001 policy allowing Aluminized Type 2 CMP under specific site conditions showed deterioration rates similar to those before the 1974 study. A pilot study was also conducted to investigate an alternative method for estimating deterioration rates using a soil leachate analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report covers a literature search and review and a limited field study to update previous work related to corrugated steel pipe (CSP) and durability estimation (expected service life). The study, using plain galvanized (zinc coated) CSP as the base line, addresses additional coatings including nonmetallic (bituminous coated, bituminous coated and paved, polymers, fiber bonded, epoxy bonded and concrete lined) and other metallic coatings (aluminum-zinc (galvalume) and aluminum-coated type 2) that may be used to achieve a desired design life of at least 50 years. The study is limited to storm drainage systems carrying naturally occurring surface water only.

Download or read book An Asset Management Approach for Drainage Infrastructure and Culverts written by Mohammad Najafi and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drainage infrastructure systems (culvert, storm sewer, outfall and related drainage elements) are mostly buried underground and are in need of special attention in terms of proactive/preventive asset management strategy. Drainage infrastructure systems represent an integral portion of roadway assets that routinely require inspection, maintenance, repair and renewal. Further challenges are the wide geospatial distribution of these infrastructure assets and environmental exposure. There has been considerable research conducted on culverts, but mostly looked at the problem from a traditional structural/geotechnical perspective. Asset management procedures for culverts and drainage infrastructure systems are complex issues, and can benefit a great deal from an optimal asset management program that draws from programs pertaining to buried pipes. The first and most important step in an asset management initiative is the establishment of mechanism for asset inventory and asset conditions in a format compatible with the routine procedures of field operators and inspectors. The first objective of this research project was to develop field protocols and operational business rules for inventory data collection and management and inspection of drainage infrastructures in terms of types of data to be collected, frequency of inspection, and analysis and reporting mechanisms. After review of these protocols by the project oversight committee, a pilot study was conducted to verify efficiency of their implementation. The condition assessment protocol introduced is useful in evaluating the overall condition of culverts and can be used for decision making regarding the repair, renewal or replacement of culverts. For the second objective of this project, investigators examined the inventory and inspection protocols employed by Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and developed a decision support platform, which establishes a link between the inspection results and appropriate repair, renewal and replacement procedures. After applying the recommended procedures, the transportation agencies can better track the conditions of culverts thereby reducing the risks of culvert failures.
