Book excerpt: [Complete Play-Along tracks sold separately at the author's website - see below]Internalizing 2 against 3 is every musician's wish. As much as there are books extensively covering scale permutations, there are none that clearly illustrate all the possibilities that occur within the subdivisions of 2 and 3, in all their downbeats and upbeats, while also taking melodic motion into consideration.Training melodic motion awareness in rhythmic exercises is underrated while it is highly essential for any musician, especially the improvising jazz musician since being able to hear complex 2's and 3's patterns with changing pitches is integral to utmost freedom in phrasing. In this book, you will find 56 exercises in both, scalar and rhythmic notation, that will take you from the simple pattern of - half note triplet against whole notes - into the complex -syncopated 16th note triplets against syncopated 16th notes, hoping that along the way, this will help you achieve effortless sensitivity to swing and groove. Included with the eBook (sold separately) are play-along tracks of all 56 patterns with stereo separation so you can "hear" each pattern and practice against any line you wish.* Play-along tracks are available for download at www.tarekyamani.com/dupletriple* eBook (pdf version) + play-along tracks can also be purchased as a bundle from the author's website at www.tarekyamani.com/dupletriple

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our sense that a waltz is "in three" or a blues song is "in four with a shuffle" comes from our sense of musical meter. Hearing in Time explores musical meter from the point of view of cognitive theories of perception and attention. London explores how our ability to follow musical meter is simply a specific instance of our more general ability to synchronize our attention to regularly recurring events in our environment. As such, musical meter is subject to a number of fundamental perceptual and cognitive constraints, which form the cornerstones of London's account. Because listening to music, like many other rhythmic activities, is something that we often do, London views it as a skilled activity for performers and non-performers alike. Hearing in Time approaches musical meter in the context of music as it is actually performed, rather than as a theoretical ideal. Its approach is not based on any particular musical style or cultural practice, so it uses familiar examples from a broad range of music--Beethoven and Bach to Brubeck and Ghanaian drumming. Taking this broad approach brings out a number of fundamental similarities between a variety of different metric phenomena, such as the difference between so-called simple versus complex or additive meters. Because of its accessible style--only a modest ability to read a musical score is presumed--Hearing in Time is for anyone interested in rhythm and meter, including cognitive psychologists, musicologists, musicians, and music theorists.

This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC FUNDAMENTALS AND LEAD-SHEET TERMINOLOGY is intended for the beginning commercial musician. This book assumes no technical knowledge of music and starts from the premise that the reader is either currently (or soon to be) involved in private music study with someone who teaches an instrument (or voice) or plans to become proficient through self instruction and practical experience. The concise format presented here offers an accelerated program that gets the beginning musician up and running within a relatively short span of time. Chapters 1 through 9 provide a technical foundation for the survey of chord descriptions in Chapter 10. The opening chapter introduces notes and rests, concepts in rhythm and meter, repeat signs, and performance directions. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 present the subjects of pitch, scale, and key signature. Intervals, the minor mode, triads, and seventh chords follow in Chapters 5, 6, 7, and 9. Since a significant portion of commercial music and jazz involves scales and modes that are neither major nor minor, the topic of church modes is explored in Chapter 8. Chapter 10 outlines and analyzes the chord symbols typically represented in lead sheets. More than 220 music examples demonstrate the concepts presented in the text. 170 pages.

Through analyses of a number of Honegger's compositions, including extended analyses of two of Honegger's orchestral works, "Mouvement symphonique No. 2 (Rugby)" and "Symphonie pour cordes", Keith Waters examines the principles of musical organization in Honegger's music and shows how these principles are based on systematic rhythmic and contrapuntal strategies. Musical form in Honegger's work, the book argues, is articulated by contrapuntal and rhythmic structures rather than by tonal structure, and it is this that provides the source of compositional unity in Honegger's music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to poetry geared toward the study of song "Fusing an approach that engages both lyrics and musical content of English-language songs in a wide swath of genres, Lines and Lyrics gives readers the tools and concepts to help them better interpret songs, in an accessible and enjoyable format."--Victoria Malawey, author of A Blaze of Light In Every Word: Analyzing the Popular Singing Voice "I can think of no other book that juxtaposes art song and pop song so effectively, in a way that doesn't privilege one over the other. This is a real achievement, and a must-have for anyone who loves words and songs."--Stephen Rodgers, University of Oregon Bruce Springsteen, Benjamin Britten, Kendrick Lamar, Sylvia Plath, Outkast, and Anne Sexton collide in this inventive study of poetry and song. Drawing on literary poetry, rock, rap, musical theater, and art songs from the Elizabethan period to the present, Matt BaileyShea reveals how every issue in poetry has an important corresponding status in song, but one that is always transformed. Beginning with a discussion of essential features such as diction, meter, and rhyme, the book progresses into the realms of lineation, syntax, form, and address, and culminates in an analysis of two complete songs. Throughout, BaileyShea places classical composers and poets in conversations with contemporary songwriters and musicians (T. S. Eliot and Johnny Cash, Aaron Copland and Pink Floyd) so that readers can make close connections across time, genres, and fields, but also recognize inherent differences. To aid the reader, the author has created a Spotify playlist of all the music discussed in this book and provides time cues throughout, enabling readers to listen to the music as they read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In From Bach’s Goldberg to Beethoven’s Diabelli: Influence and Independence, music scholar and noted pianist Alfred Kanwischer takes readers on an extended exploration in which each of the thirty-three pieces making up Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations (Op. 120) is caringly examined and assessed for its ingredients, actions, personality, and influence on the whole. Counterpoint abounds, not only in the fugal variations, which are closely parsed, but throughout the Diabelli, revealing the noticeably baroque character of the technical compositional devices Beethoven employs. Throughout his study, Kanwischer integrates comparisons with Bach’s immortal Goldberg Variations. Both sets stand alone as among the greatest keyboard variations in the Western canon. During their creation, the composers were nearly the same age, at the zenith of their art, and in similarly felicitous frames of mind. Kanwischer underscores twenty essential similarities, from the use of melody and melodic outline and the comparability among variations in size, parallel design, ebullient outlook, increasing contrasts, daring virtuosic flights, Shakespearean blend of comic and tragic, and their respective cumulative rises to spiritual transcendence. From Bach’s Goldberg to Beethoven’s Diabelli takes readers on a lively and stimulating journey of discovery. It considers not only questions of influence but those of insight and understanding, offering a work useful as a reference and as a guide to performers, music instructors, and devotees. This work also includes seventy visually annotated interpretive musical examples as aids to understanding.
