Book excerpt: Dung beetles in the families Scarabaeidae (subfamilies Aphodiinae, Scarabaeinae and Coprinae) and Geotrupidae (Geotrupinae) aid in the decomposition of dung, providing many benefits to pasture and animal health. They compete with pestiferous flies and parasitic nematodes for dung resources, enrich the soil by burying large quantities of nutritious dung and effectively mix and aerate soil through tunneling. Very little is known about the composition of dung beetle species existing in North Carolina cattle pastures or their seasonal activity. Dung-baited pitfall trapping was conducted for 18 months in cattle pastures of two distinct regions of NC, the piedmont and the coastal plains. Data from the piedmont and coastal plains revealed a disparity in species richness (14 and 28 species, respectively) and beetle numbers (20 traps yielding 85,882 beetles and 10 traps yielding 4,111 beetles, respectively). However, both sites were dominated by nine exotic dung beetles and had similar species compositions. The seasonal activity of 30 species is reported, including two new state records, Aphodius prodromus Brahm and Onthophagus gazella (Fabricius). These data represent important background information on the relative abundance and richness of dung beetle species in North Carolina. Two additional studies evaluated the benefit of dung beetles on soil nutrition, and the off-target effects of the insect growth regulator methoprene on dung beetle populations. The activity of two species of tunneling dung beetles (Onthophagus gazella and Onthophagus taurus Schreber) was found to contribute to the general nutrition of three soil types (piedmont clay, coastal plains sandy-loam and play sand) under laboratory conditions. Beetles reproducing in the soils buried dung for brood production, elevating levels of major and minor plant nutrients, as well as altering other soil properties (including pH, cation exchange capacity and exchangeable acidity). A survey of dung beetles was conducted from May to October 2005 in 10 counties representing the three geographic regions of North Carolina, the Mountains, Piedmont and the Coastal Plain. Total of 1,863 specimens representing 15 species were collected from dung baited pitfall traps or directly from cattle dung. Most commonly collected species were Aphodius pseudolividus Olivier and Onthophagus taurus Schreber. Elevation, temperature and soil type were taken into consideration when rationalizing the presence of certain species in the different regions of North Carolina. A study was conducted to evaluate benefits of O. taurus activity on soil nutrition and yield of two common North Carolina pasture grasses. Tunneling activity of O. taurus and dung burial for brood production elevated the levels of major plant nutrients P, K and N in three soil types (Piedmont clay, Coastal Plain sandy-loam and play sand) under laboratory conditions. O. taurus activity increased the yield of Sudangrass Sorghum bicolor (L.) and ryegrass Lolium multiflorum Lam. over the dung only treatment and control. Dung beetle presence improved ryegrass yield over the fertilizer treatment in Cecil red clay and play sand. Methoprene, an insect growth regulator successfully reduced the horn fly [Haematobia irritans (L.)] numbers in an area-wide program in Nash Co., NC. Little is known of the environmental fate of the tons of physiologically active steroid hormones released each year. In their own regard, in the last 20 years considerable attention has been given to a wide variety of natural and anthropomorphic agents known as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). Until the contribution of steroid hormones to the environment are better defined, it will be difficult to quantify the exact impact of EDCs. While some advances in the understanding of the fate of these compounds in water has been made, little is known about the processes that govern their transport in soil or how they eventually reach groundwater. As this book discusses extensively, it is somewhat of a mystery how steroids, with their lipophilic nature, strong binding to humic acids and extensive metabolism by soil bacteria, can be transported through even a few centimeters of soil, let alone 20 to 40 meters to the groundwater. With respect to antibiotics, the emphasis is on their fate and transport in the environment and on the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Impacts on soil ecology, including the impact of antibiotics on the metabolism of other active agents, is also discussed. Similarly, the acaricides and insecticides used in animal husbandry are widely used and their environmental pathways have been studied and have significant impacts on soil and dung ecology. Active compounds with potential environmental impacts, such as growth promoters generated from CAFOs, are described. However, because little is known of their environmental fate, emphasis is placed on defining the gaps in our knowledge and defining their possible effects.

Colonization of dung piles by dung beetles can help facilitate the decomposition of dung, control dung-breeding pests, and cycle important nutrients into the soil to improve pasture quality. Cattle are grazed on pastures at various stocking densities depending on the type of grazing practice. The influence of grazing practices on dung beetle communities and services remains largely unknown. Our first study investigated dung beetle activity across different cattle grazing practices to determine how grazing might influence dung beetle abundance and diversity. Dung beetle populations were monitored throughout the grazing season on pastures that were grazed under various practices: non-grazed/hay, continuous grazing, low-stocking rotational grazing, and high-stocking (mob) rotational grazing. Results from this study showed significantly higher dung beetle diversity on pastures exposed to rotational grazing practices compared to continuous grazing or no grazing. In some cases, dung beetle abundance and species richness were significantly greater on pastures that were grazed through high-stocking rotational grazing compared to low-stocking rotational or continuous grazing treatments. Based on these data, rotational cattle grazing may favor the colonization of dung beetles on rangeland, regardless of stocking density. Our second study investigated whether dung beetles exhibit preferences for dung from cattle exposed to different grazing practices. Dung from cattle in three separate grazing practices were used to test dung beetle preference: continuous grazing, low-stocking rotational grazing, and high-stocking rotational grazing. Dung beetle abundance was measured as well as the nutrient and physical properties of each dung type. Results of the study revealed no significant differences in dung beetle abundance between dung collected from each grazing practice. Nutritional content, pH, moisture, and dry matter levels also were not significantly different. However, the results indicated varying dung beetle species composition on dung from the continuous versus rotational grazing practices. Overall, cattle grazing practices may not affect dung composition or its influence on dung beetle preferences.
