Book excerpt: Dumb College tells the story of Veena Singh, a woman fighting the American society bent on eliminating all paper books, storing the text electronically, and “weeding out” the undesirable and “politically incorrect” text. Veena is an exile, sent to America by her Indian professors to study the American decline in 2049. In her time, the authoritarian nations of Southeast Asia and Russia lead the world, as America and Europe begin to flounder. Veena’s Indian professors are also baffled by reports from underground American academicians. Apparently, a human-readable message emanated from the Big Bang. But nearly every American university has summarily ignored this “postcard from God.” At her Arkansas college, Dorothy Underwood Multiversity, Veena observes America’s intelligentsia and brightest youth. She meets hypocritical deans and professors, and she lives among the fine arts students, who blindly follow the professors. For her thesis, Veena’s American professors order her to help find the “right-wing cabal” that threatens to end college admissions quotas. Meanwhile, she faces three stalkers and the threat of immediate deportation. Dumb College blends humor, rich characters, and intellectual intrigue in the story of Veena’s fight to save Western literature, philosophy and art, and her search for the message from God.

Fearless."It's pretty safe to say that Spy was the most influential magazine of the 1980s. It might have remade New York's cultural landscape; it definitely changed the whole tone of magazine journalism. It was cruel, brilliant, beautifully written and perfectly designed, and feared by all. There's no magazine I know of that's so continually referenced, held up as a benchmark, and whose demise is so lamented" --Dave Eggers. "It's a piece of garbage" --Donald Trump.

Book Synopsis University of Tennessee by : Aaron D. Purcell
Download or read book University of Tennessee written by Aaron D. Purcell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state, the legislature of the Southwest Territory chartered Blount College in Knoxville as one of the first three colleges established west of the Appalachian Mountains. In 1807, the school changed its name to East Tennessee College. The school relocated to a 40-acre tract, known today as the Hill, in 1828 and was renamed East Tennessee University in 1840. The Civil War literally shut down the university. Students and faculty were recruited to serve on battlefields, and troops used campus facilities as hospitals and barracks. In 1869, East Tennessee University became the states land-grant institution under the auspices of the 1862 Morrill Act. In 1879, the state legislature changed the name of the institution to the University of Tennessee. By the early 20th century, the university admitted women, hosted teacher institutes, and constructed new buildings. Since that time, the University of Tennessee has established campuses and programs across the state. Today, in addition to a rich sports tradition, the University of Tennessee provides Tennesseans with unparalleled opportunities.
