Book excerpt: This comprehensive and concisely written volume creates a template for DUI enforcement and evaluation of DUI arrests for the police officer, the police supervisor, the breath analysis operator, the prosecutor, and the defense attorney. This book accompanies the DUI seminars of William Pelarenos, a retired police officer, a state-certified breath analysis operator, and a state-certified standardized field sobriety testing instructor. The seminars are based on police experience, certified training, and trial experience. During his twenty-six-year tenure with the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department, he made over nine hundred DUI arrests and testified in hundreds of cases including summary suspension hearings, bench trials, jury trials, grand jury testimony, and depositions. During the last five years of his career, he was part of a three-man Cook County wide DUI enforcement unit that effected arrests throughout 21 townships, 132 suburbs, and the city of Chicago. He was called out to investigate DUI-related traffic crashes. He taught standardized field sobriety testing and DUI enforcement to hundreds of police officers from suburban police departments, Cook County Sheriff's Police Department, Chicago Police Department, and state troopers from the Illinois State Police. William Pelarenos, during his career, was honored for his DUI enforcement by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, Cook County Crime Stoppers, Cook County Sheriff's Police, Illinois Department of Transportation, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He is currently holding DUI seminars across Cook County, Illinois, and this text is a compilation and summary of the procedures and issues that are discussed in the seminars. It includes the Illinois Administrative Code and the Illinois Vehicle Code and examples of felony complaints which is used as a reference and resource guide. Book excerpt: Meticulously researched by a senior private banker now turned historian, No More Champagne reveals for the first time the full extent of the iconic British war leader's private struggle to maintain a way of life instilled by his upbringing and expected of his public position. Lough uses Churchill's own most private records, many never researched before, to chronicle his family's chronic shortage of money, his own extravagance and his recurring losses from gambling or trading in shares and currencies. Churchill tried to keep himself afloat by borrowing to the hilt, putting off bills and writing 'all over the place'; when all else failed, he had to ask family or friends to come to the rescue. Yet within five years he had taken advantage of his worldwide celebrity to transform his private fortunes with the same ruthlessness as he waged war, reaching 1945 with today's equivalent of £3 million in the bank. His lucrative war memoirs were still to come. Throughout the story, Lough highlights the threads of risk, energy, persuasion, and sheer willpower to survive that link Churchill's private and public lives. He shows how constant money pressures often tempted him to short-circuit the ethical standards expected of public figures in his day before usually pulling back to put duty first-except where the taxman was involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This all inclusive reference book deals with all aspects of DUI/DWI and is aimed exclusively towards the investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. It addresses the subject matter thoroughly and is geared toward the experienced police officer actively involved in DUI/DWI detection and arrest. The book can be carried in a patrol car as a ready reference or be used in the classroom. All of the necessary information needed to professionally investigate incidents of impaired driving, prepare a comprehensive report and then be able to testify as an expert in a court of law is provided. It goes into detail in explaining the intricacies of why a person becomes intoxicated, why the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Field Test is a valuable and valid psycho-motor or field test, and it also provides a step by step approach to extrapolating blood alcohol content. The central nervous system of the human being is explained in a manner that is easily understood by the average person, connecting the how and why the CNS is affected and therefore how this impairment manifests itself as a drunk driver as opposed to a drunk pedestrian. The manual also contains sections dealing with alcohol, depressant and stimulant drugs, which are critical to the proper understanding of the observable effects of drugs and alcohol. Also included are instructional objectives for each section, section quizzes and a comprehensive final exam. It will not only help to increase the confidence level of those everyday working street cops who must make decisions about whether to arrest or not arrest on any given impaired or intoxicated driver situation, but it will also provide the basis for the street cop to excel in this field of law enforcement and prepare themselves as an expert in the detection and arrest of DUI drivers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir and spiritual guide from an Austin, Texas cab driver is “the real deal: good taxi and straight dharma” (Jack Kornfield, bestselling author of The Wise Heart). Brian Haycock was a cabdriver—who happened to be a Buddhist. During the course of his career, he learned that each fare provided an opportunity to learn the life lessons of the Buddha. So, hop in and buckle up; we’re off on our journey to self-discovery, passing through the precepts, the four noble truths, taking a hard left to stop and get coffee—where we’ll learn a few breathing techniques to bolster our patience—all the while watching for ambulances and bikers, focusing our attention and awareness so that we can arrive at our destination in good time and in one piece. Here are stories from everyday life that demonstrate how we can all benefit from a little Buddhist philosophy. With each chapter focusing on a specific topic, readers will learn to coast their way to building a life routine, focusing the mind, calming themselves with breathing exercises, and much more. “Engagingly written.” —Stephen Batchelor, national bestselling author of Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist “Compassionate and entertaining.” —David Brazier (aka Dharmavidya), author of The Feeling Buddha “Amusing and wise.” —Arthur Jeon, author of City Dharma and Sex, Love, and Dharma: Finding Love Without Losing Your Way “Wise and witty and direct: very Zen. Also, fun to read.” —Sylvia Boorstein, national bestselling author of Happiness is an Inside Job and That’s Funny, You Don’t Look Buddhist
