Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DUI is a must-read for all of those who desire to be equipped to have victory in the war of deception that the Devil has waged against the saints. One of the grave mistakes that the modern church has made is that of minimizing the Enemy. He is a formidable opponent that we within ourselves have no chance of defeating. The reason why many saints are being defeated by the Enemy is because the body of Christ is having such a difficult time recognizing the Devil. The Bible says that he would deceive not just the world, but even the very elect, if it were at all possible. DUI exposes how the Enemy uses worship to get believers intoxicated with the world. This book systematically breaks down the difference between worship in the Spirit, which cleanses us, and Babylonian worship, which entertains us. It dissects the biblical foundations of worship and how the Enemy is attempting to change those foundations. You may have wondered how you could be a part of worship experiences that deeply affected you emotionally although many of the other participants left these experiences yet dominated by their flesh, spiritually blind, and carnally minded. This book has the answers! It is a must-read for all of those desiring to worship God in Spirit and truth and be found faithful when he returns!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sets out to examine how Christian scriptures have been read within a Chinese reading tradition, and to assess what questions such readings pose for both theologians and Chinese studies specialists. The absence to date of publications on the topic, and the scattered nature of such research and of scholars in the field makes this an important contribution to debate. The volume gathers essays from Biblical studies experts together with theologians and Chinese text scholars to discuss the interdisciplinary questions raised. Essays from mainland, Taiwanese and diasporic Chinese scholars ensure that a range of opinions (including those reflecting fault lines between 'academic' and 'confessional' positions) are presented. Within the four sections of the volume, several papers discuss and correct the current lineage of historical readings, while others study the historical impact of the Bible in Chinese society. Four essays give contextual or cross-cultural readings, with a focus on individual exegetes, mainly from the early twentieth century. The power of performance is raised in two essays, one comparative paper on Christian and Buddhist scriptures from the Qing dynasty and one on the singing of psalms in modern day Taiwan and Macao. Moral questions preoccupy others, including the challenges that early Chinese converts found in Biblical laws or Christian guidance on concubinage, and extrincisist readings of the Sermon on the Mount.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study that is largely intellectual history, Cao Jian observes how Old Testament motifs were introduced by Protestant missionaries and Bible translators, with the help of Chinese co-workers in the beginning, and how those motifs drew attention from local converts and led to discussions among them in light of the norms in Confucianism. Then, Cao demonstrates how Confucian reformists started reacting to missionary publications and showing interest in Old Testament motifs. After the defeat of China in 1894–1895 in the Sino-Japanese War, the response to the Old Testament became more active and influential among China's population. The author shows new interests and tendencies in Old Testament interpretation among educated Chinese with various political ideals at a time of national crisis. He also demonstrates how the vernacular movement in Bible translating and missionary Old Testament education popularized and modernized Old Testament reading and studies in Chinese society. After that transitional period, discussions of Old Testament motifs became even more abundant and diverse. The author concentrates on those regarding the notion of God and monotheism. In China’s nationalism, the Old Testament proved no less stimulating. The author deals with Moses and the prophets to understand how they became valid to those active in both religious and secular realms.

Book excerpt: Chinese Christianity is fascinating and perplexing. Yet, although its existence can be dated back to the Tang Dynasty, when Christianity, in the form of Nestorianism, first arrived in China, it has not been extensively researched by Chinese academics. This volume is devoted to this topic and consists of twelve chapters, written mostly by leading mainland Chinese scholars. These writings shed light on five themes: epistemological reflection on Chinese Christian theology; interactions between Christianity and Chinese culture; the empirical and historical examination of Christian ethics and social development in China; the Chinese understanding of the Bible as literature; and the remarkable contribution that Christianity has made to Chinese higher education and cultural exchange with the external world.

Book excerpt: Groundbreaking and inspiring, this book offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of Asian feminist biblical criticism. It is a gift to the Asian churches and to the theological community. I highly recommend it to all who search for biblical insights to empower women and men to work for justice. --- Kwok Pui-lan, Dean’s Professor of Systematic Theology at Candler School of Theology, Emory University This is a superb collection of the different approaches of feminist biblical scholars in Asia. I found it invigorating and thought-provoking to learn about the multiple ways in which Asian feminists made their "exodus" from Western biblical studies to interpret this foundational text in their own unique contexts. --- Gale A. Yee, Nancy W. King Professor of Biblical Studies Emerita, Episcopal Divinity School This collection of essays by mostly younger Asian biblical scholars is a welcome addition to a small but growing body of Asian feminist studies. The diversity of perspectives, methodologies and creative interpretations makes it an ideal introductory text for anyone wishing to learn more about Asian feminism. --- Simon Chan, Editor, Asia Journal of Theology
