Book excerpt: This project was performed to propose ductile failure criteria as a function of the stress triaxiality for the API X42 steel pipes. The objective of this project is to determine the burst pressure of modeled pipe using strain based failure criteria. In this project, uniaxial tension test was performed using three types of specimen. The specimen extracted from API X42 5L steel pipe. The steel pipe was machined to desired dimension and obeys the international standard of ASTM-E8 specimen. Three type of specimen which is smooth, notch radius 1.5 mm, 3 mm and 6 mm prepared and undergoes uniaxial tension test. The engineering stress-stress data retrieved from the test converted to the true stress-strain curve. The true stress-strain data become as an input data to the simulation analysis. Initial and final diameter of specimen was taken to calculate the strain fracture of the pipe. Stress modified critical strain criteria were proposed by using the strain fracture. The findings of the main parameter which is burst pressure predictions precede by using FEA software. Finite Element analysis was performed by using MSC Patran/Marc 2008r1 software. In MSC Patran, the API X 42 steel pipes was modeled. Burst pressure predicted compared to the available industrial pipe design assessment in order to validate the obtained results.

Book excerpt: This book provides the most up-to-date, advanced methods and tools for risk assessment of onshore pipelines. These methods and tools are based primarily on information collected from ILI measurements and additional information about the soil surrounding the pipeline. The book provides a better understanding how the defects grow and interact (repulsion or attraction) and their spatial variability. In addition, the authors contemplate new defects that evolve between inspections and how they could affect the pipeline's reliability. A real-world case is presented to reinforce the concepts presented in the book. The book is structured into three parts: i) an introduction to onshore pipelines and the problem of corrosion, ii) a framework that deals with uncertainty for integrity programs for corroded pipelines, and iii) the applications of the methods presented in the book. The book is ideal for researchers and field engineers in oil and gas transportation and graduate and undergraduate engineering students interested in pipeline reliability assessments, spatial variability, and risk-based inspections.

Book excerpt: This thesis deals with assessment of defective API 5L X65 steel pipes which are widely used in product transportation in oil and gas industry. The objective of the thesis is to determine the burst pressure of defective API X65 steel pipes under the effect of gouge length for different pipe diameter. The thesis describes the finite element analysis techniques to predict the true fracture and identify the critical locations of the structures (pipe). One-quarter three-dimensional solid modelling of steel pipe was developed using the MSC Patran 2008r1 that act as a pre-processor. The finite element analysis was then performed using MSC Marc. The finite element model of the pipe was analyzed using the non-linear isotropic elasto-plastic material that obeys the incremental of plastic theory. The values of principal stresses and strains acted on the critical location of gouge defect had been obtained by MSC Patran as a post-processor. The values were used to determine the true fracture strain which is known to be exponentially dependent to the stress triaxiality. Finally, burst pressure was determined as the true fracture strain exceeds the value of equivalent strain at that instant point. Based on the results, it is observed that the analysis using SMCS model yields more conservative burst pressure prediction. The obtained results indicate that the shorter gouge length would gives higher burst pressure which means, higher pressure needed as the pipe to experience failure at the gouge defect area. Result shows that the burst pressure decreases with increment of pipe diameter. The results concluded that the shorter gouge length and smaller pipe diameter conditions give the highest pressure value of pipe burst. Therefore, the defect characteristic is the promising criteria to increase the fitness of service of the pipe.

Book excerpt: The objective of this work was to describe several of the ductile failure criteria com- monly used to solve practical problems. The following failure models were considered: equivalent plastic strain, equivalent plastic strain in tension, maximum shear, Mohr- Coulomb, Wellman's tearing parameter, Johnson-Cook and BCJ MEM. The document presents the main characteristics of each failure model as well as sample failure predic- tions for simple proportional loading stress histories in three dimensions and in plane stress. Plasticity calculations prior to failure were conducted with a simple, linear hardening, J2 plasticity model. The resulting failure envelopes were plotted in prin- cipal stress space and plastic strain space, where the dependence on stress triaxiality and Lode angle are clearly visible. This information may help analysts select a ductile fracture model for a practical problem and help interpret analysis results.

Book excerpt: The pipeline industry has conducted a vast amount of research on the subject of mechanical damage. Mechanical damage makes up a large portion of the total amount of pipeline failures that occur each year. The current methods rely on engineering judgment and experience rather than scientific theory. The method for the assessment of mechanical damage introduced in this study uses a material property called critical strain to predict the onset of cracking within the pipe wall. The critical strain is compared to the strain within a dent using a ductile failure damage indicator (DFDI). To investigate the use of the DFDI to indicate the onset of cracking within a dent, the study attempted to accomplish three tasks. The first was to investigate the use of various techniques to locate the critical strain from the stress-strain curve. Five samples taken from the pipe material was used to generate both engineering and true stress-strain curves. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to show the effects of different variables on the critical strain value. The DFDI compares the critical strain value to the calculated strain at the deepest depth location within a dent. The strain calculations use the curvature of the dent and thus require a dent profile. A high resolution laser scanner was used to extract dent profiles from a pipe. The second task of the study was to investigate the reliability of the laser scanner equipment used for this study. The results from the investigation showed that the laser scanner could be used to scan the inside of the pipe despite its design for external scanning. The results also showed that the scans should be 1 mm in length along the axis of the pipe at a resolution of 0.5 mm and 360 degrees around the pipe. The final task was to conduct the denting test. The test used a spherical indenter to dent the pipe at increments of 3% of the outside diameter. The results from the test showed that a visible crack did not form on the inside pipe surface as expected from the DFDI method. This does not mean a crack did not form. During the denting test distinct popping sounds were observed possibly indicating cracks forming within the pipe wall.
