Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dublin Street Names, Dated and Explained This History, very full as far as it goes, is (as is well known) incomplete. It does not touch upon the north side of our City, nor does it at all exhaust the history of the south side. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a broad-ranging exploration of two comic erotic and well-nigh feminist novels written by Raymond Queneau, On est toujours trop bon avec les femmes (1947) and Journal intime (1950). Both are set in Ireland, were initially published by Éditions du Scorpion under the pseudonym Sally Mara, and then later published together by Gallimard as Les Œuvres completes de Sally Mara (1962). The book examines Queneau’s life when he wrote these texts, the pervasive Joycean influences, his surreal version of the 1916 Dublin Uprising versus the real event, his remarkably accurate Dublin city and his use of the Irish language. The seven core chapters are explorations of prominent aspects of these works, and most involve the solution of puzzles by means of investigations of contexts, contemporary events, and a wide variety of sources. In conclusion, the book makes a convincing case for the literary and entertainment value of Les Œuvres completes de Sally Mara as a long-planned and subtly integrated work.

Book excerpt: Pirates executed in St Stephen's Green; Mother Bungy's 'sink of sin' in what is now Temple Bar; the Viking thingmote in College Green where human sacrifices took place; hidden holy wells under the city streets: these are just some of the things uncovered by Dubliner Frank Hopkins in this surprising and entertaining book. Famous sons and daughters of the city also make an appearance: John Pius Boland of the famous milling family, who won two Olympic medals for tennis in 1896 playing in street clothes and leather shoes; Jack Langan, the bare-knuckle boxer of Ballybough; Sir William Cameron, the public health specialist who devised a bounty scheme for captured houseflies in 1913; and the Dolocher, the savage eighteenth-century beast in the form of a pig who turned out to be a man.

Book excerpt: This is the first volume in a short series that will deal with the planning and development of Dublin from the earliest times to the present day. The focus is on the built environment and from both geographical and historical perspectives aims to unravel and explain the processes that have interacted to produce today's city. It begins with a discussion of Dublin's early development, emphasizing the value of maps in understanding how the city grew. There follows a detailed examination of the city's flowering in the eighteenth century, and their inter-relationships. This leads into a discussion of the problems of the nineteenth century city. This volume concludes with a reconstruction of Dublin at the beginning of the twentieth century, looking at how it might have been seen and experienced by the people of the day. Book excerpt: The period 1815-45 was seminal in the evolution of the Society into a philanthropic institution wholly independent of government. This book examines the history of the Royal Dublin Society at a time when that body was coming to terms with changes in its relationship with the state. An 18th-century foundation, the Society had both an educational and an economic development role in Ireland and founded a national museum, botanic gardens, library, and art school. Because many of its activities were developed under parliamentary patronage it was heavily dependent on government subsidies. At the same time, it insisted on asserting its independence against the encroachments of the state.

Book excerpt: This innovative book interprets architectural spaces in the light of the underlying tensions between 18th-century Dublin as a fashionable resort and the attempts by the authorities to deal with some of the results of its apparent profligacy. These include the creation of new institutions as well as other measures designed to remove ugly realities from the street and purify urban space. Based mainly on 18th- and 19th-century archival material from the Rotunda Hospital, the Lock (venereal) Hospital and the Hospital for Incurables, this book challenges the vision of 18th-century Dublin as an ideal Protestant city by investigating the hidden world behind its wide streets and magnificent Georgian facades. The decision to establish the British Isles' first maternity hospital on the northern edge of Sackville Street (today's O'Connell Street) was grounded in a series of imperatives where obstetrics and medicine were only part of the overall story. The adjacent Pleasure Gardens, created ostensibly to provide funds for the hospital, introduced new types of social engagement and an increase of commodified forms of entertainment to the city. The Gardens, characterised by acts of spectacle and display, soon acquired an additional reputation as a site of sexual adventure and louche behaviour, one which ultimately would be extended to the city. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An archaeology of lunacy is a materially focused exploration of the first wave of public asylum building in Britain and Ireland, which took place during the late-Georgian and early Victorian period. Examining architecture and material culture, the book proposes that the familiar asylum archetype, usually attributed to the Victorians, was in fact developed much earlier. It looks at the planning and construction of the first public asylums and assesses the extent to which popular ideas about reformed management practices for the insane were applied at ground level. Crucially, it moves beyond doctors and reformers, repopulating the asylum with the myriad characters that made up its everyday existence: keepers, clerks and patients. Contributing to archaeological scholarship on institutions of confinement, the book is aimed at academics, students and general readers interested in the material environment of the historic lunatic asylum.

Eight essays emerged, most by archaeologists with a smattering of historians. They consider such aspects
