Book excerpt: The United Kingdom comprises thousands of islands and for many centuries transport between the main islands and the outlying communities has required reliable shipping routes, both long and short-haul, for commerce, trade and travel. Ferries have become an essential means of transport for many outlying populations and down the years routes have continually changed and been adapted to meet the requirements of the period. This remains so today, with established ferry routes in a constant state of flux, with the dire economic circumstances of the present imposing their own financial restraints upon routes and timetables. This volume presents a snapshot of the major Offshore Ferry routes as they currently stand, with details of the routes, the ships and the amenities; added to which are the outline histories of companies and links. This volume encapsulates all these strands and should prove a useful aide to all travellers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mail communication between London and Ireland was very important for both official and trade purposes from the 15th Century. From the mid 16th Century a number of designated ports were used to ship the mail to Ireland and posts were laid to those ports along defined routes, however, these routes were subject to change. This book identifies the ports, when they were used and presents the history of the changes to those routes from that early time until 1850. Detailed descriptions of the routes are given in text, tables and figures showing how they changed over these years, together with a discussion of those changes and a commentary on the improvements that were made to the roads over the years, particularly in the difficult areas of North Wales, South Wales and South West Scotland. Also included is the history of the Edinburgh to Portpatrick route. Finally the effect of the introduction of the railways on the carriage of mail to Ireland is described.

Book excerpt: The Irish Famine of 1845-49 was a major modern catastrophe. The return of the potato blight in 1846 triggered a huge exodus of destitute Irish seeking refuge in British towns and 1847 witnessed an unprecedented inflow of Irish refugees into Britain. This book examines the scale of that refugee immigration, the conditions under which the refugees were carried to Britain, the relief operations mounted, the horrors of the typhus epidemic in Liverpool, Glasgow, Manchester, South Wales and the North-East, and the financial cost to the British ratepayers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By turning off the main highway and discovering old routes, some of which have been travelled for thousands of years, you will see Ireland in an entirely different way. Follow the Old Road will take you on a tour of a variety of pathways from great river roads to lost railways. Long before records began, travellers arriving on our shores found safe havens, natural harbours, the estuaries of rivers, and settled there, in sight of the ocean that had brought them to this land. Gradually they moved inland to more fertile soil, usually along the course of a river that provided both guidance and essential water supplies. In later centuries, great lords built their castles and monks their abbeys upriver, at the tidal limit. Some of the routes are still used today while others lie ignored and overgrown. Villages, and, later on, towns grew up around these castles and abbeys to serve their needs; towns that still prosper today.
