Pelas condições favoráveis de clima, a produtividade do trigo nesta região no sistema irrigado, em lavouras com altitude superior a 400m, é muito superior a da região sul do país. Além disso, existe a possibilidade de produção de trigo de sequeiro nessas áreas de cerrado, com altitude acima de 800m, onde é alcançada produtividade próxima da média nacional. Com os dois sistemas há grandes perspectivas para o aumento da produção nacional de trigo, na medida em que melhores cultivares e com maior adaptação as épocas de plantio, sejam desenvolvidas pela pesquisa. Os programas de melhoramento genético devem ser examinados periodicamente, a fim de identificar possíveis problemas durante as etapas, visando maximizar o planejamento das atividades por parte dos melhoristas. Desta forma, a realização deste trabalho teve como objetivo quantificar o progresso genético obtido pelo programas de pesquisa do trigo nos sistema irrigado e sequeiro, no Estado de Minas Gerais, no período de 1976 a 2005. A eficiência dos programas de melhoramento de trigo, nos dois sistemas, foi estudada utilizando-se os dados de produtividade de grãos obtidos nos ensaios de valor de cultivo e uso. Os ensaios foram conduzidos em parceria, por instituições federais e estaduais de pesquisa agropecuária, em 19 locais do Estado de Minas Gerais no sistema irrigado e em 10 locais no sistema de sequeiro, no período de 1976 a 2005. Para a estimativa do progresso genético e ambiental foi utilizada a metodologia de Vencovsky e colaboradores. O progresso genético médio anual estimado no período de 1976 a 2005 foi de 48 kg ha (elevado a -1) ano (elevado a -1) e 37 kg ha (elevado a -1) ano (elevado a -1) na produtividade média de grãos, nos sistemas irrigado e sequeiro, respectivamente. Apesar do ganho genético ter contribuído significativamente, as melhorias ambientais foram importantes para o aumento da produtividade. Os programas de melhoramento de trigo irrigado e sequeiro promovem respectivamente, 33% e 35% de renovação de genótipo ao longo dos anos. Com base nos resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa, pode-se concluir que após 30 anos de pesquisa no Estado de Minas Gerais, o melhoramento genético de trigo irrigado e sequeiro, produziu resultados positivos e significativos, refletindo nas estimativas do ganho genético médio em produtividade. Os evidentes ganhos indicam nitidamente que os programas de melhoramento do trigo em Minas Gerais mostraram-se eficientes, contribuindo para a melhoria da produtividade da cultura.
