Book excerpt: The stonemasons were well-known for their skills, and their seasonal migration from central France, but especially for their role in rebellion. This book places the masons' story within the larger history of nineteenth-century Paris. The coverage spans the long nineteenth century, starting before 1789 and ending near 1914.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of the life and work of Saint-Nazaire's shipbuilding workers in the 30 years before World War I, Schuster shows that the consequences of industrial production for workers differed sharply according to their resources and experiences. She details the competing identities and divergent values maintained by shipbuilding workers, demonstrating that they were fostered by the interaction between state programs, industrial production, and the traditions pursued in the local realm. Third Republic economic policies for shipbuilding promoted unemployment and worker dependence on state officials over union leaders, and the uneven application of capitalist methods of production meant multiple workplace experiences that further undercut association. A workforce composed of industrial workers and agricultural producers brought markedly different priorities to the workplace. Urban-dwelling industrial workers proved dependent on shipbuilding, while workers commuting from La Grande Bri^D`ere, a nearby marshland, were property-owning producers, mostly peat-cutters, with traditions of self-government and a commanding community identity. They turned to ship production precisely to maintain rural settlement and agricultural production. These divergent values and responses to industrial work, in conjunction with multiple barriers to association, generated separate and even contrary labor concerns and protests.

Book excerpt: The modern history of Ladakh has been profoundly shaped by influences from South Asia and beyond. In detailed empirical case-studies the contributors document and analyse change and continuities in this region brought about by colonialism, independence and modernisation. In an introductory review essay highlighting emerging themes and continuing debates in the scholarship on Ladakh, the editors argue for the need to situate Ladakh in an Indian and South Asian context, while also taking into account its cultural, linguistic and historical ties with Tibet. Studies from the neighbouring (sub)regions of Kargil, Ladakh, Zangskar and Baltistan are brought together to make an important contribution to the anthropological and sociological literature on development and modernity, as well as to Ladakh, Tibetan and South Asian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 20 years of rapid political, economic, social, and cultural change have turned Southeast Europe into a laboratory of transformative processes - processes that have deeply affected the structures of everyday life and that have resulted in a variety of (post-)modern life styles. The contributions by native and foreign researchers to this first of two volumes shed light on the changing practices and patterns of everyday life in Southeast Europe, many of which differ from those in other parts of Europe. The concepts of multiple modernities and post-modernity appear to be highly appropriate for a region in which - under the combined impact of post-socialist transformation, globalization, and EU integration - everyday life is marked by sharp dichotomies and tensions. Understanding these paths to (post-)modernity is relevant for those interested in the Balkans, as well as for those generally interested in processes of socio-cultural change. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers gathered in this book were presented at the First International Conference (held in Paris, University of Sorbonne, October 27th-28th 2006), devoted to the newly discovered Gospel of Judas, preserved in the 4th century Coptic Codex Tchacos. These essays explore several crucial literary, historical and doctrinal issues related to this gospel, composed in the second half of the 2nd century. This unexpected discovery sheds a new light on the role attributed to Judas by some Gnostic Christian movements. A hotly debated question is precisely the significance of Judas in this gospel: hero or villain? Special attention is given to the sources - Greek, Jewish, Christian and even Iranian - used by the unknown author. This book will be of special interest for historians of late Antiquity religions and scholars in New Testament studies, Gnosticism and Coptic literature.

Book excerpt: Economic Reforms in Eastern Europe and Prospects for the 1980s focuses on the institution of economic reforms and prospects in Eastern Europe, including manpower availability, scarce and expensive energy and raw materials, deficiency of technological innovation, and inflexibilities in management. The selection first offers information on the economic reforms in Bulgaria, Romanian economic reforms, and the economic reforms in Czechoslovakia. Discussions focus on "the kj problem" and its resolution, evaluation of the Bulgarian model, Romanian economic development, and principles contained in the directives. The text then examines the reform of the system of economic management in Poland; economic reforms and consumers in Eastern Europe; and the prospects for the 1980s of the economic reforms in Bulgaria and Romania. The publication takes a look at the economic prospects for the 1980s of Czechoslovakia and the German Democratic Republic. Topics include factors impending economic growth, overemployment, increases in consumer good prices, welfare of consumers, and decreasing economic growth. The book further elaborates on the economic prospects for the 1980s of Hungary and Poland and the effects of energy development on East European economic prospects. The selection is a vital reference for economists and readers interested in the prospects for the 1980s of the economic reforms in Eastern Europe.
