Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Dictionary: explains technical Roman legal terms, translates & elucidate those Latin words which have a specific connotation when used in a juristic context or in connection with a legal institution or question, & provides a brief picture of Roman legal institutions & sources as a sort of an introduction to them. The objectives of the work, not the juristic character of available Latin writings, therefore, determined the inclusion or exclusion of any single word or phrase. This dict. is not intended to be a complete Latin-English dict. for all words which occur in the writings of the Roman jurists or in the various codifications of Roman law. The reader must consult a general Latin-English lexicon for ordinary words that have no specific meaning in law or juristic language. Reprinted 1980.

More Latin for the Illiterati demystifies the terminology of modern courtrooms and hospitals, untangles some of the most complex and unforgiving examples of Latin abbreviation, and allows readers to explore the classical roots of law, medicine and the ministry. This new collection contains nearly 5000 entries devoted to law, medicine and religion, and includes phrases like:jus sibi dicere-- to take the law into one's own hands hircosus-- smelling like a goat opprobrium medicum [the reproach of physicians]--an incurable disease ita et viri debent diligere uxores ut corpora sua--so men ought to love their wives as their own bodies [Ephesians 5:28] ludere cum sacris--to trifle with sacred things amicus curiae--a friend of the court Practicing or aspiring doctors, lawyers or ministers, language-lovers, students of literature--and anybody who loved Latin for the Illiterati, will want More... This collection also makes an ideal gift. Praise for the first Illiterati collection: If you're a student trying to improve your vocabulary, this is a great book... For those who have forgotten their three years of parochial-school Latin, this is really great book. --Publisher's Weekly A ready-reference dream come true...--American Libraries Also of interest: Latin for the Illiterati: Exorcizing the Ghosts of a Dead

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How risk, disasters and pollution were managed and made acceptable during the Industrial Revolution Being environmentally conscious is not nearly as modern as we imagine. As a mode of thinking it goes back hundreds of years. Yet we typically imagine ourselves among the first to grasp the impact humanity has on the environment. Hence there is a fashion for green confessions and mea culpas. But the notion of a contemporary ecological awakening leads to political impasse. It erases a long history of environmental destruction. Furthermore, by focusing on our present virtues, it overlooks the struggles from which our perspective arose. In response, Happy Apocalypse plunges us into the heart of controversies that emerged in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries around factories, machines, vaccines and railways. Jean-Baptiste Fressoz demonstrates how risk was conceived, managed, distributed and erased to facilitate industrialization. He explores how clinical expertise around 1800 allowed vaccination to be presented as completely benign, how the polluter-pays principle emerged in the nineteenth century to legitimize the chemical industry, how safety norms were invented to secure industrial capital and how criticisms and objections were silenced or overcome to establish technological modernity. Societies of the past did not inadvertently alter their environments on a massive scale. Nor did they disregard the consequences of their decisions. They seriously considered them, sometimes with dread. The history recounted in this book is not one of a sudden awakening but a process of modernising environmental disinhibition.

Book excerpt: 21 papers focus on modelling the costs of construction over the course of 2,500 years, from Bronze Age Greece to the early Middle Ages. They discuss both broader issues of methodology and particular case studies, with particular attention to the exploitation of raw materials (e.g. quarries), transport, and construction processes on building sites.
