Book Synopsis The Canary Murder Case by : S. S. Van Dine
Download or read book The Canary Murder Case written by S. S. Van Dine and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2023-06-23T19:01:37Z with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philo Vance, the snobbish art collector who happens to be the longtime friend of District Attorney John Markham, once more finds himself drawn into a criminal investigation. Margaret Odell, the beautiful and talented theatrical singer nicknamed “The Canary,” has been strangled during the night, and from the very beginning there are signs that nothing in the case is quite what it appears to be. Accompanied once more by Sergeant Heath, the unlikely trio struggle to make sense of the evidence. S. S. Van Dine found even more success with this novel, his sophomore outing as a mystery writer. Spending months on the bestseller lists, it was also the first of his books to be made into a movie, with William Powell starring as Philo Vance. At a time when a majority of successful mystery writers were English, Van Dine’s novels evoked an atmosphere that was distinctly American, with Vance’s cultured perspective colliding with Markham’s pragmatic sensibilities and Heath’s no-nonsense street smarts. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book Synopsis Decolonizing Revelation by : Rufus Burnett
Download or read book Decolonizing Revelation written by Rufus Burnett and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when ideas like “post-racial society” and “#BlackLivesMatter” occupy the same space, scholars of black American faith are provided a unique opportunity to regenerate and imagine theological frameworks that confront the epistemic effects of racialization and its confluence with the theological imagination. Decolonizing Revelation contributes to this task by rethinking or “taking a second look” at the cultural production of the blues. Unlike other examinations of the blues that privilege the hermeneutic of race, this work situates the blues spatially, offering a transracial interpretation that looks to establish an option for disentangling racial ideology from the theological imagination. This book dislocates race in particular, and modernity in general, as the primary means by which God’s self-disclosure is read across human history. Rather than looking to the experience of antiblack racism as revelational, the work looks to a people group, blues people, and their spatial, sonic, and sensual activities. Following the basic theological premise that God is a God of life, Burnett looks to the spaces where blues life occurs to construct a decolonial option for a theology of revelation.
Book Synopsis H. G. Wells and the Culminating Ape by : Peter Kemp
Download or read book H. G. Wells and the Culminating Ape written by Peter Kemp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H.G. Wells's view of the world - and hence his writing - was strongly influenced by the biologist's training he received during his three years as a student at the Normal School of Science, South Kensington (now Imperial College, London). Those things which a creature needs in order for it and its species to thrive get particular attention in Wells's books. Tracing biological themes through Wells's work, as Peter Kemp does here, shows the pattern of his thought and brings to light the bizarre workings of a fascinating imagination. For the book's reissue in paperback, an afterword has been added.

Download or read book Original Grin written by Ron English and published by Cernunnos. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through his highly subversive art Ron English (b. 1959) has bombed the global landscape with striking and often unsettling imagery. He coined the term "POPaganda" to describe his signature and darkly satirical renderings of corporate branding icons. Ranging from superhero mythology to pillars of art history, his work is populated with a vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters such as MC Supersized, the obese fast-food mascot featured in the hit movie Supersize Me; and Abraham Obama, which fused America's 16th and 44th Presidents, an image that was posited by the media as having directly impacted the 2008 election. His cameo on The Simpsons secured his position as America's premier pop iconoclast. This book is the first complete retrospective of English's work, compiling his paintings, illustrations, toys, sculpture, street art, and "agit-pop." Additionally, it contains a lengthy and comprehensive interview with the artist conducted exclusively for this publication.
