This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The regional animal feed action plan was formulated through a consultative and participatory process building on experiences and lessons learnt by wide spectrum of key stakeholders in public and private sectors, notably, policy makers, traders, pastoralist and farmers' organizations, civil society, NGOs, and the development partners. It builds on the earlier consultative experience sharing workshop on feed by USAID, ILRI, IGAD and FAO in the region. The plan provides broad opportunities for partnerships with producers, governments, and private sector, development and humanitarian organizations at the national and regional levels. It provides a guided approach to collectively tackle the problems of animal feed and pave the way for sustainable production of quality animals and products while improving competitiveness, profitability and ensuring sustainable feed resource management for the entire Eastern African region. The aim of the action plan is to provide guidelines to communities, countries, private sector and livestock stakeholders to optimally utilize the available feed resources in East Africa to increase the supply as well as improve the quality of animals, products and by-products and to maximize the economic and social benefits of the livestock sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With dryland areas accommodating approximately one billion people in over a hundred countries, there is obviously a problem of increased stress being placed on the natural resources of these areas, which ultimately contributes to overall land degradation. Coupled with this, many developing countries, particularly in Africa, are showing a fall in agricultural production per capita, with people migrating away from dryland areas; such relocation to marginal lands and forests or to already over-populated cities further enhances global land degradation. With this in mind, Social Aspects of Sustainable Dryland Management attempts to address the overall problem of land degradation and provides ways in which dryland productivity and viability can be increased and managed for future years. The volume bases its results on case studies and field research projects, and encourages a greater involvement of the local population in developing methods of management of their own natural resources. This volume therefore embodies a concept of development far beyond conventional methods. It aims to show that land management must develop around the priorities, needs and objectives of the people concerned and emphasises the need to involve local people in solving the problems of resource degradation, so that future research and modern technologies can be developed with their participation. Above all, it seeks to recognise the value of indigenous knowledge in sustainable development, so that such knowledge systems can become the starting point from which to plan management strategies and new technological adaptations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drylands cover 41 percent of the earth' s terrestrial surface. The urgency of and international response to climate change have given a new place to drylands in terms both of their vulnerability to predicted climate change impacts and their potential contribution to climate change mitigation. This book aims to apply the new scientific insights on complex dryland systems to practical options for development. A new dryland paradigm is built on the resources and capacities of dryland peoples, on new and emergent economic opportunities, on inward investment, and on the best support that dryland science can offer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheep and wheat are the staples of dryland farms in the Mediterranean zone of the Northern Hemisphere. The commonly used dryland farming system introduced in the 1950s is proving unsustainable. Erosion has reached a critical level and pastures have all but disappeared. Experts advise more cropping (forage crops for instance) and more fertiliser. Yet intensification of the present system will only hasten erosion. Is there an alternative system that is both environmentally sustainable and within the means of most farmers in the region? Innovative farmers in a similar climate in Australia discovered a sustainable rotation using annual medics as both fertiliser and pasture. Attempts to transfer their knowledge have often foundered. Why is this so? How much do the experts know about this system? This book pulls apart the warp and weft of development on dryland farms to try to find some answers to these questions.

Book excerpt: Ecosystems and Human Well-Being is the first product of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, a four-year international work program designed to meet the needs of decisionmakers for scientific information on the links between ecosystem change and human well-being. The book offers an overview of the project, describing the conceptual framework that is being used, defining its scope, and providing a baseline of understanding that all participants need to move forward. The Millennium Assessment focuses on how humans have altered ecosystems, and how changes in ecosystem services have affected human well-being, how ecosystem changes may affect people in future decades, and what types of responses can be adopted at local, national, or global scales to improve ecosystem management and thereby contribute to human well-being and poverty alleviation. The program was launched by United National Secretary-General Kofi Annan in June 2001, and the primary assessment reports will be released by Island Press in 2005. Leading scientists from more than 100 nations are conducting the assessment, which can aid countries, regions, or companies by: providing a clear, scientific picture of the current sta
