Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dryden's Fable of the Hind and the Panther: Considered With Regard to the Ecclesiastical Policy of James the Second Times were troublesome in England when James the Second was at the head of the nation. In 1685 - 1688 the royal power made efforts for the last time to undermine the liberties and rights of the nation, political as well as personal and religious, it tried every means to establish an absolute government at the expense of national privileges and prerogatives of the parliament. It is well known that James the Second did not meet with success. The constitution of England proceeded save, even strengthened from the conflict, and never since a king of England could succeed to modify it in favour of the crown. That short reign of James the Second, as it is worthy already for this political reason to be studied with the greatest attention, seems no less important to an ecclesiastical historian and to every one who takes an interest in the history of development of the Church of England. James the Second, the last of the sovereign Stuarts and as I believe, the least too, was also the last king of England confessing himself a Catholic. He, the last, tried to overthrow the edifice of Established Church and to convert by force or inconstitutional means the nation to Catholicism. - Conviction, however, cannot be obtruded. It is obvious that those pertinacious attempts of converting the English nation to Catholicism have been the very cause of James' misfortune. Download or read book John Dryden written by David J. Latt and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1976-04-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dryden was first published in 1976. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. This annotated bibliography represents a comprehensive updating of Samuel Holt Monk's earlier work, also published by the University of Minnesota Press, John Dryden: A List of Critical Studies Published from 1895 to 1948 (out of print). Since the publication of that earlier bibliography, the number of studies devoted to Dryden has more than tripled, and thus this new bibliography is essential for scholars of Dryden or related aspects of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English literature. This volume contains four times as many entries as the earlier volume, and there is an extensive introduction by Professor Latt which surveys the historical shifts in critical opinion of Dryden. The new volume incorporates all of the listings contained in the first one. The entries include works that focus directly on Dryden, those that discuss Dryden's works in the context of other writers, and those that investigate material of general importance to Dryden studies. Dissertations from American, German, English, and French universities are included. Complete bibliographic information is provided for virtually every entry. The listings are grouped in nine categories, and there is an additional section which covers festschriften and other collections of essays. Works of exceptional value and those which develop new points of view are so designated. The publishing history of each item is included along with the standard bibliographic information. The index includes topical as well as author entries.

Book excerpt: The Critical Heritage gathers together a large body of critical sources on major figures in literature. Each volume presents contemporary responses to a writer's work, enabling students and researchers to read for themselves, for example, comments on early performances of Shakespeare's plays, or reactions to the first publication of Jane Austen's novels. The carefully selected sources range from landmark essays in the history of criticism to journalism and contemporary opinion, and little published documentary material such as letters and diaries. Significant pieces of criticism from later periods are also included, in order to demonstrate the fluctuations in an author's reputation. Each volume contains an introduction to the writer's published works, a selected bibliography, and an index of works, authors and subjects. The Collected Critical Heritage set will be available as a set of 68 volumes and the series will also be available in mini sets selected by period (in slipcase boxes) and as individual volumes.
