Book excerpt: Drugstore Camera feels like a stumbled-upon treasure, a disposable camera you forgot about and only just remembered to develop. Yet in this case the photographer is Dennis Hopper and the photographs, remarkably, are never before published. Shot in Taos, New Mexico, where Hopper was based following the production of Easy Rider in the late 60s, the series was taken with disposable cameras and developed in drugstore photo labs. This clothbound collection documents Hopper's friends and family among the ruins and open vistas of the desert landscape, female nudes in shadowy interiors, road trips to and from his home state of Kansas and impromptu still lifes of discarded objects. These images, capturing iconic individuals and wide-open Western terrain, create a captivating view of the 60s and 70s that combines political idealism and optimism with California cool. Dennis Hopper (1936-2010) was born in Dodge City, Kansas. He first appeared on television in 1954 and quickly became a cult actor, known for films such as Rebel Without a Cause (1955), Easy Rider (1969), The American Friend (1977), Apocalypse Now (1979), Blue Velvet (1986) and Hoosiers (1986). In 1988 he directed the critically acclaimed Colors. Hopper was also a prolific photographer and published now-classic portraits of celebrities such as Andy Warhol and Martin Luther King Jr. His works are housed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.

Book Synopsis Still As Bright by : Christopher Cokinos
Download or read book Still As Bright written by Christopher Cokinos and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An immersive exploration of the nightly presence that has captured our imagination for the entirety of human history. "When the Moon rises between buildings or over trees, it’s not just a beautiful light: It’s an archive of human longing, fear and adventure. The Moon is more than a rock. It’s a story.” In the luminously told Still s Bright, the story of the Moon traverses time and space, rendering a range of human experiences—from the beliefs of ancient cultures to the science of Galileo’s telescopic discoveries, from the obsessions of colorful 19th century “selenographers” to the astronauts of Apollo and, now, Artemis. Still As Bright also traces Cokinos's own lunar pilgrimage. With his backyard telescope, he explores the surface of the Moon, while rooted in places both domestic and wild, and this award-winning poet and writer rediscovers feelings of solace, love and wonder in the midst of loss and change. Simultaneously steeped in rigorous cultural and scientific history, as well as memoir, Still As Bright is a thoughtful, deeply moving, evergreen natural history. It takes readers on a lyrical journey that spans the human understanding of our closest celestial neighbor, whose multi-faceted appeal has worked on witches, scientists, poets, engineers and even billionaires. Still As Bright is a must-read for anyone who has ever looked up into the night sky in awe and wonder. Readers will never look at the Moon the same way again.

Book Synopsis A Lifetime's Non-ordinary Events by : Richard F. Ward
Download or read book A Lifetime's Non-ordinary Events written by Richard F. Ward and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In about the year 1980, I began recording the non-ordinary events, people met and places visited in my life. Eventually, I looked back into my past life to recount past events, people and places which came to mind for the earlier years. As subsequent years rolled by, I had assembled a list of 172 items which I consider unusual or non-ordinary in my lifetime. My next step in the evolution of this work was to elaborate on each of the parts - to expand on each of the one or two line statements. When assembled, it dawned on me that it provided an autobiography, albeit different from a usual biography, of my life. Hopefully, the treatment will render the human story more entertaining to the average reader. Having reached the middle of my octogenarian decade, perhaps a better perspective can thus be obtained. The reader's entertainment is the effect I wish to impart. If this should ensue, the effort shall not have been merely self-aggrandizement.

Book excerpt: "Ike Schwartz outing combines high-tech detection with routine sleuthing" —Booklist Ruth Harris, Sherriff Ike Schwartz's fiancée, is involved in a near fatal automobile accident. But Ike is convinced the crash was rigged. Even though he is embroiled in a close election, has no jurisdiction over the investigation, and can find no support in the usual law enforcement community, he places himself on leave and goes rogue to investigate and seek the person or persons responsible for putting Ruth in a coma. Help arrives from unexpected and irregular sources. Old friends in the covert community step up and his loyal staff in Picketsville provide undercover assistance. The journey leads Ike to state's rights organizations, then to several zealots and dissident academics before it finally ends at home in Picketsville.
