Book excerpt: A total of 6,007 persons representing the household population of Jamaica 12 years old and older were interviewed in their homes. Some 72 percent of males and 50 percent of females reported that ganja would be easy to get if they wanted it. A total of 37 percent of males and 12 percent of females between the ages of 20 and 40 reported that some, most, or all of their close friends smoke ganja. Among all males in the study, 75 percent of those who reported use of ganja in the past year indicated that some, most or all, of their close friends smoke ganja compared to 39 percent of those who had not used ganja in the past 12 months. Comparable percentages for females were 70 percent and 26 percent. Only 24 percent of males and 34 percent of females strongly disapprove of regular ganja use. A total of 11 percent of males 30-39 years old compared with 3.2 percent of females in this age range reported they would find it easy to get cocaine if they wanted it. Slightly under 60 percent of males and slightly over 60 percent of females strongly disapprove of trying cocaine and crack. Approximately 35 percent of males 20-40 years old report having had 5 or more drinks on the same occasion at least once in the two weeks before they were interviewed compared to between 7 and 9 percent of females of the same age. Comparable figures on excessive alcohol consumption for males and females 40 years and over were 36 percent and 4 percent respectively. The overwhelming majority of Jamaicans who have never used cigarettes and ganja or alcohol and ganja report having used cigarettes and alcohol prior to using ganja. Use of cigarettes, alcohol, and ganja are strongly correlated with use of other drugs.
