Droplets were supported by an ultrasonic sound field in a 3 x 3-inch shock tube. By subjecting the droplets to blasts of different intensities, data were obtained which define the critical or rupturing blast speed for each droplet diameter in the range from 100 to 600 microns. The effect of viscosity was separated from that of surface tension by choosing three silicone oils whose kinematic viscosities were 10, 50, and 100 centistokes, but whose surface tensions were only slightly different. Experimental curves of droplet diameter versus critical velocity show a significant effect of viscosity. Increasing viscosity increases the critical velocity required to rupture a drop of a given diameter. This trend becomes more pronounced as the drop diameter decreases. Correlation of the results for the silicone oils with those for water and methyl alcohol indicate that below 10 centistokes the effect of viscosity is small. Photographs of the break-up process show that a "bag" structure precedes final rupture of viscous liquids, just as was found in earlier tests with methyl alcohol and water. However, after rupture the more viscous liquids form into longer and more numerous ligaments. A secondary phase of the work attempted to study the break-up of water droplets smaller than 100 microns diameter. An additional data point at 94.5 microns was obtained which agrees well with previous results. Efforts to obtain stable sonic support for drops still smaller were not successful.
