Book excerpt: Two drop/gas interactions important in the near-injector dense region of sprays are being studied: (1) turbulence modulation, which is the direct generation or modification of turbulence by drop motion, and (2) secondary drop breakup, an important rate-controlling process in dense sprays. Effects of turbulence modulation were measured in homogeneous flows generated by particles falling in stagnant air and water baths. The flow was analyzed with a simple stochastic approach, involving linear superposition of randomly-arriving particle velocity fields. Guided by the theory, unified correlations of turbulence properties were achieved for the measurements. Further progress requires more information about particle wake properties at modest Reynolds numbers in turbulent fields: this is the main focus of current work. Secondary drop breakup is being studied using a shock tube and various drop generators, emphasizing near-limit breakup which is most relevant to dense sprays. Work thus far has concentrated on definition of deformation and shear breakup regimes. This will be followed by study of breakup dynamics and outcomes using holocinematography instrumentation that was recently developed in this laboratory. Keywords: Multiphase flow, Homogeneous turbulence, Drop breakup. (jhd).

Book excerpt: Turbulence generation and liquid breakup are being studied due to their relevance to dense combusting sprays found in propulsion systems. Turbulence generation is the main source of turbulence in dense sprays; it consists of drop wake disturbances embedded in a turbulent interwake region. Both regions are unusual compared to conventional fluid flows: the drop wakes are laminar-like turbulent wakes typical of intermediate Reynolds number wakes in turbulent environments; the turbulent interwake region consists of isotropic turbulence in the little-studied final decay period. Work already completed has resolved the properties of the turbulent interwake region and overall flow properties for monodisperse particle (drop) flows; current work is addressing these properties for more practical polydisperse particles (drops). Primary and secondary liquid breakup are important because they are the rate-controlling processes of dense sprays and fix initial conditions for dilute sprays. Past work has shown that liquid breakup should be treated as a rate process and has provided the temporal properties of secondary drop breakup at large liquid/gas density ratios based on experiments. Current work is considering drop deformation and breakup based on time-dependent numerical simulations, emphasizing conditions where liquid/gas density ratios are small and effects of liquid viscosity are large, which are important for practical applications but are difficult to consider using experiments.

Axisymmetric situations with droplets moving in tandem and three-dimensional situations with droplets moving in parallel have been considered. Detailed velocity and thermochemical properties fields have been determined. Lift and drag coefficients, Nusselt numbers, and Sherwood numbers for the droplets have been obtained. Correlations of these numbers with instantaneous Reynolds number and transfer number have been obtained. The flow field has been solved by implicit finite-difference solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. Explanations for the modifications of lift and drag forces, trajectories, and transport phenomena due to droplet interactions have been formulated. Results have been obtained for fuel droplets, especially in high temperature environments, and, to a limited extent, for liquid oxygen (LOX) droplets in a hot, reducing environment. The results, especially the correlations, should prove useful in spray modelling.

Book excerpt: This book provides a selection of contributions to the DIPSI workshop 2019 (Droplet Impact Phenomena & Spray Investigations) as well as recent progress of the Int. Research Training Group “DROPIT”.The DIPSI workshop, which is now at its thirteenth edition, represents an important opportunity to share recent knowledge on droplets and sprays in a variety of research fields and industrial applications. The research training group “DROPIT” is focused on droplet interaction technologies where microscopic effects influence strongly macroscopic behavior. This requires the inclusion of interface kinetics and/or a detailed analysis of surface microstructures. Normally, complicated technical processes cover the underlying basic mechanisms, and therefore, progress in the overall process modelling can hardly be gained. Therefore, DROPIT focuses on the underlying basic processes. This is done by investigating different spatial and/or temporal scales of the problems and by linking them through a multi-scale approach. In addition, multi-physics are required to understand e.g. problems for droplet-wall interactions, where porous structures are involved.

Revised by the new editors, Efstathios E. (Stathis) Michaelides and John D. Schwarzkopf, the new Second Edition begins with two chapters covering fundamental concepts and methods that pertain to all the types and applications of multiphase flow. The remaining chapters cover the applications and engineering systems that are relevant to all the types of multiphase flow and heat transfer. The twenty-one chapters and several sections of the book include the basic science as well as the contemporary engineering and technological applications of multiphase flow in a comprehensive way that is easy to follow and be understood. The editors created a common set of nomenclature that is used throughout the book, allowing readers to easily compare fundamental theory with currently developing concepts and applications. With contributed chapters from sixty-two leading experts around the world, the Multiphase Flow Handbook, Second Edition is an essential reference for all researchers, academics and engineers working with complex thermal and fluid systems.
