Book excerpt: The personal accounts contained here, reveal the untold experiences and relationships of an ethnographer with the people she lived and worked among for over 10 years in northwestern Pakistan among Afghan refugees and tribal Pakistani Pashtuns. They are the everyday occurrences and personal experiences of a woman living alone, or with her infant daughter, secrets and blunders withheld from academic books. Friends and colleagues have asked what it was like to be a foreign woman alone in an isolated and strict tribal Muslim culture. They ask even more so now, piqued by curiosity about the culture that is said to be protecting Osama bin Laden. These stories herein answer many of those queries and reveal information complementary to other political and scientific books.

Book excerpt: Gonzo journalist and literary roustabout Hunter S. Thompson flies with the angels—Hell’s Angels, that is—in this short work of nonfiction. “California, Labor Day weekend . . . early, with ocean fog still in the streets, outlaw motorcyclists wearing chains, shades and greasy Levis roll out from damp garages, all-night diners and cast-off one-night pads in Frisco, Hollywood, Berdoo and East Oakland, heading for the Monterey peninsula, north of Big Sur. . . The Menace is loose again.” Thus begins Hunter S. Thompson’s vivid account of his experiences with California’s most notorious motorcycle gang, the Hell’s Angels. In the mid-1960s, Thompson spent almost two years living with the controversial Angels, cycling up and down the coast, reveling in the anarchic spirit of their clan, and, as befits their name, raising hell. His book successfully captures a singular moment in American history, when the biker lifestyle was first defined, and when such countercultural movements were electrifying and horrifying America. Thompson, the creator of Gonzo journalism, writes with his usual bravado, energy, and brutal honesty, and with a nuanced and incisive eye; as The New Yorker pointed out, “For all its uninhibited and sardonic humor, Thompson’s book is a thoughtful piece of work.” As illuminating now as when originally published in 1967, Hell’s Angels is a gripping portrait, and the best account we have of the truth behind an American legend.

Book excerpt: Standing in the Great Room at my home, I see a rainbow, appearing between the mirrors on my living room wall. I note that the six colors of the chakra system are in the correct sequence: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and lilac at the top of the rainbow. Looking at my watch, the time is 5:50 p.m. The rainbow disappears, and now, none can be seen. The time is 5:55 p.m. Next, almost immediately, two rainbows appear. The first one is on the back of the Great Room Wall to the right above the sofa while I stand there facing the mirrors. The second rainbow appears on the lamp. Both of them contain the six colors of the chakra system in the chronological order. I am left wondering if these visuals are the light of God giving me the go ahead for putting my writings into the hands of the people. Since the chakra system and the rainbow are both utilized in my writings, I believe this sign is from God and no accident.

Book excerpt: What is love? How do we get and keep that almost indescribably happy feeling? The collection, New Love Poems, by award-winning poet Terry Benczik moves with tenderness, sensitivity, and humor through love's many moods. The book reflects the wild adventure and charming idyll that romantic feelings provide. It describes a woman's journey of love through a jungle of emotions, from attraction and excitement through hurt, despair, longing, and hope. There are also portraits of feelings of love that soar and bring the reader to an elevated territory. The thoughts and feelings here are images and stories we might all recognize and cherish. Some poems spark sentiment, wistfulness, desire, and laughter. Other poems reflect love, not just for a romantic partner, but for humanity and the divine beloved; conveying a realization that the love we carry in our hearts is the most precious gift we can give to ourselves and to others. "Reading poetry awakens our own inner artisan energies and transforms us. New Love Poems is a treasure of blessing-filled healing poems for both heart and soul. Terry Benczik is truly Rumis daughter with her profound, authentic heart poetry." -Rev. Jayne Howard Feldman, author of Commune with the Angels, Driving Under the Influence of Angels, and Angels by My Side "Well, a rare combination of talents is our Terry Benczik! She is fully conscious of the joys of human lifethat 'pleasing, anxious being,' as Thomas Gray so memorably described it; and simultaneously she is movingly mindful of Virgil's 'tears of things'; (lacrimae rerum). Yet she somehow manages to suffuse a tender charm over both these aspects of our mortal experiences, both the weeping and the laughter. I'm sure it is her aesthetic sensitivity which I find so appealing -that gentle power, that verbal elegance, that poignant memorability, which characterizes her poetic achievement." -Colin Dexter, creator, Inspector Morse https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/terry-benczik/new-love-poems/

Book excerpt: The award-winning authors of The Road to Hell: How the Biker Gangs Are Conquering Canada bring us a definitive, up-to-the-minute account of the Hells Angels and the international biker network. Marsden and Sher explain how the expansion of America’ s foremost motorcycle gang has allowed this once ragtag group of rebels, outcasts and felons to become one of the world’s most sophisticated criminal organizations. While the media has continued to toast the Hells Angels California leader, Sonny Barger, as an American legend, the facts tell another story—they are America’s major crime export. With an estimated 2,500 full-patch members in 25 countries, the Hells Angels have inspired a global subculture of biker gangs that are among the most feared and violent underworld players. Angels of Death takes readers to Arizona, inside the biggest American police undercover operation to infiltrate the bikers; to British Columbia where wealthy bikers dominate the organized crime pyramid; to Australia where the “bikies” shoot it out with police; to Curaçao where terrorist organizations funnel drugs to Dutch bikers; and to the streets of Oslo, Copenhagen and Helsinki where a murderous biker war saw rocket attacks and bombs turn Scandinavia into a war zone. For the first time, police officers who have infiltrated biker gangs tell their secrets—revealing the challenges, fears and horrors they’ve discovered going undercover. Sher and Marsden take the reader behind the latest headlines to tell the story of how the Hells Angels became so powerful, and how the police—with only a few successes—have tried to stop them. Excerpt from Angels of Death: Three murderous evenings, three different continents, three faces of the Angels of death: the killing of innocents, the killing of fellow bikers, and the killing of cops. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of lives ruined, brains fried, bodies withered by the methamphetamines, cocaine and other drugs pushed by the bikers. And yet while the body count kept mounting, Sonny Barger, the Californian patriarch and international leader of the Hells Angels, was being feted by the international media as he promoted his latest bestselling book. Even the usually thoughtful British press fell for the rebel Yankee. The Times called him, “affable, big-hearted, warm.” The Independent labelled him an “American legend.” And in many ways he is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the use of communication campaigns to promote road safety, arguing that they need to elicit public discourse on issues pertaining to culture, equity, gender, workplace norms, environmental issues, and social solidarity. Increasingly, new media channels and formats are employed in the dissemination process, making road safety-related messages ubiquitous, and often controversial. Policy makers, educators, researchers, and the public continue to debate the utility and morality of some of the influence tactics employed in these messages, such as the use of graphic images of injury or death, stigmatization (or "blame and shame"), and the use of "black humor." Guttman argues that influencing road safety requires making changes in normative and cultural conceptions of broader issues in society, yet the typical discourse on road safety tends to focus on individual attitudes and practices. The book highlights the importance of social and behavioral theory in communication campaigns on road safety, and critiques the tendency to focus on individual cognition, affect, and risk conceptions rather than on normative, structural, and cultural factors. The volume positions the discourse on road safety as a social issue, and treats road safety behavior as a social activity that directly relates to other public issues, social values, and social policy, while discussing potential uses of social media and participatory approaches. The discussion turns to the role of road safety communication campaigns as part of a democratic process of eliciting public discourse, including how contemporary society could address broader issues of risk and safety.

When the problems we face are too complex to be solved by counselors, friends, or even Dear Abby, Dr. Virtue shows us another way-a divine way-to discover answers. Divine Prescriptions also explains how and why God and our guardian angels use us as messengers to give advice and consolation to others. She explains how to distinguish between normal conversations and key messages from the angels (who are constantly around us) and provides step-by-step instructions for performing angel readings. Dr. Virtue's universe is benign, the angels around us mean us well, and once we are able to receive their vitally important communications our goals and those of the people we love will become attainable.

Book excerpt: Experiencing a calamitous year of the COVID-19 pandemic can crack the core of anyone’s faith, undermining the strongest foundation. How could anyone cope with the continuous confusion and chaos to find comfort and peace? Not realizing it initially, this trial forced author Barbara Speicher to seek and find answers to many of life’s important questions. Her daily writings became a synthesis of daily news, God’s perspective through His life-changing word, reflections on pertinent personal experiences, and her overall responses. These became life-sustaining food for the long haul during the pandemic, bringing understanding and enlightenment to many critical emotions and issues: fear, worry, sadness, grief, faith, trust, peace, perseverance, gratitude, and hope. God was focusing attention on His transforming truths, and the importance of obeying them with a godly mindset. Barbara has collected these thoughts into a devotional in Hearing from God. Steeped in scripture, God’s nuggets of truth, this devotional helps you overcome hardships and grow personally through the difficulties and challenges. The objective is to gain understanding for better living in the present and to make good decisions in the future, moving forward in a positive direction. God, His words of truth, and great love for every person are an integral part of each page bringing healing, hope, and light to any of life’s challenges.
