Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frozen samples of perennially frozen ground were obtained from 33 holes drilled at six locations in the National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska in the spring of 1979. Total depth of drilling was 510 m (1670 ft), of which 178 m (584 ft) was cored. The objectives of the program were to define the location and extent of segregated and massive ice at each location and to determine the origins and ages of the ground ice through studies of the hole stratigraphy and future laboratory analyses of core samples.

This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive review of drilling technologies in the polar regions, from the portable drilling equipment for shallow sampling and coring, to heavy drilling equipment for deep onshore and offshore drilling. Particular attention is given to safe drilling methods in permafrost. In recent years, interest in drilling in the polar regions has increased under the pressure of the geopolitical “rush” and the undiscovered resource potential. In addition, borehole monitoring of permafrost thermal states is urgently needed to obtain evidence of climate change. The book focuses on the latest drilling technologies but also discusses the historical development of sampling, and drilling tools and devices, over the last 60–70 years providing valuable insights into a way forward and future possibilities.

Download or read book Coring of Frozen Ground, Barrow, Alaska, Spring 1964 written by Paul V. Sellmann and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trangular-shaped land mass of the Barrow peninsula constitutes the northern extremity of the Arctic Coastal Plan. The near-surface sediments of the Gubik formation are a reflection of late Pleistocene events and therefore contain a valuable record of sea-level fluctuations and climatic changes. Continued investigations in Pleistocene stratigraphy along the northern coast of Alaska will provide additional information for regional and world-wide correlation of Pleistocene and recent events. Cliff exposures in the immediate Barrow area do not provide adequate sections for detailed sampling. Consequently, a coring program was chosen as an appropriate means of acquiring the desired data.
