Book excerpt: During World War II, the U.S. Navy took over 35 refrigerated cargo ships from civilian importers to augment the supply fleet, including the United Fruit Company's S.S. Ulna. Renamed the U.S.S. Octans, the ship became part of the Seventh Fleet Service Force, carrying food and supplies as General Douglas MacArthur leapfrogged from his base in Australia to the Philippines. Petty Officer Kenneth G. Oliver here chronicles the ship's service during World War II, from the dangerous journeys to the Pacific Fleet bases through the shipboard activities of the crew to her decommissioning.

Book excerpt: On a bright, still morning in October, the Doraine sailed from a South American port and turned her glistening nose to the northeast. All told, there were some seven hundred and fifty souls on board; and there were stores that filled her holds from end to end,—grain, foodstuffs, metals, chemicals, rubber and certain sinister things of war. Her passenger list contained the names of men who had achieved distinction in world affairs,—in finance, in business, in diplomacy, in war, besides that less subtle pursuit, adventure: men from both hemispheres, from all continents. It was a cosmopolitan company that sailed out to sea that placid day, bound for a port six thousand miles away. Her departure, heavy-laden, from this South American port was properly recorded in the then secret annals of a great nation; the world at large, however, was none the wiser. For those were the days when sly undersea monsters of German descent were prowling about the oceans, taking toll of humanity and breeding the curse that was to abide with their progenitors forever. Down through the estuary and into the spreading bay slid the big steamer; abreast the curving coast-line she drove her way for leagues and leagues, and then swept boldly into the vast Atlantic desert.

Download or read book The Pacific written by Donald B. Freeman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating and exciting overview, Donald B. Freeman explores the role of the Pacific Ocean in human history. Covering over one third of the globe, the Pacific Ocean plays a vital role in the lives and fortunes of more than two billion people who live on its rim-lands and islands. It has played a crucial part in shaping the histories of the different Pacific cultures, towards which it has appeared in a variety of different guises. Exploring the ocean’s place in human history, this wide ranging book draws together the long and varied physical, economic, cultural and political history of the Pacific, from Prehistory through to the present day. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to show the changing viewpoints of those who explored, exploited and settled the Pacific, including the inhabitants of its Asian and American rim-lands. The book draws on new research in a variety of areas, such as early Pacific migrations, impacts of European colonization, the effects of climate change, and current economic and political developments. It provides a uniquely broad overview that will be of vital interest to students and to all those with an interest in World History.

Download or read book Stars of the Southern Cross written by A. Robert Hill and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-12 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fervency, exhilaration, trepidation and death face Collin Farley, a young Colorado rancher, who flew his aircraft through its paces in the skies over the South Pacific against overwhelming Japanese forces during the early days of World War II. The sound of aircraft engines and the firing of the 37mm canon vibrate in his ears. Tender moments under the stars on the beach of the Coral Sea where he finds love during the throes of war wrench his heart, yet the camaraderie on a Pacific island maintains his sanity. From the shooting down the private plane of Admiral Yamamoto, the master-planner of Pearl Harbor attack, to viewing performances of the Swan Lake in Melbourne, Australia, to attending high level meetings with Generals MacArthur and Kenney, the reader is swept back to 1942-43. Emotions, loves and passions soar high over the azure waters of the Solomon Sea and in the Grand Opera House with the performances of Antoinette de la Fevbre. The men and women of the Fifth Air Force lived these campaigns, loved under the Southern Cross and died in the blue waters of the Coral Sea. This dynamic epic saga explicitly comes alive through the pages of this novel.

Download or read book The Ioffe Drift written by Ivar Murdmaa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Discovery of the calcareous Ioffe Drift in the SW Atlantic in 2010 opens new perspectives in the contourite theory. Although demonstrating similar behavior relative to bottom water dynamics, rather rare and poorly studied calcareous contourites differ from their terrigenous analogs in origin, grain-size distribution, chemical and mineral composition of sedimentary particles. The detailed multidisciplinary study of the Ioffe Drift produces new knowledge on biogenic contourites deposited in pelagic realm, in conditions of low biological productivity and terrigenous material supply, under the influence of the Antarctic Bottom Water flow from the Vema Channel. The major intervals of prevailing erosion are inferred on the drift from 2.51/2.59 to 1.9 Ma and from 1.6 to 0.81 Ma thus indicating strong paleoceanographic changes most likely associated with the reorganization of deep-sea circulation and increased bottom water production in the Southern Ocean during the Early Pleistocene and, in particular, around the Mid-Pleistocene Transition.
