Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dreams, Waking Thoughts and Incidents" is a series of letters composed by William Beckford as a result of a Grand Tour on the continent in 1780-81. From brief daily notes kept during this tour, Beckford composed, not simply a travel journal, but a composition which gave occasional glimpses into the inner thoughts and dreams of the author. Strangely, Beckford himself suppressed the book on its release, destroying almost 500 copies of the original print. A much modified and toned down version was finally released in 1834 incorporated in Italy; with "Sketches of Spain and Portugal". Robert Gemmett's edition in contrast is an almost verbatim copy of the original edition of 1783, and provides a compelling early glimpse into the mind of a man who was to become universally known in later life as the 'Fool of Fonthill'.

Book excerpt: William Thomas Beckford (29 September 1760 - 2 May 1844) was an English novelist, art collector, patron of decorative art, critic, travel writer, plantation owner and for some time politician. He was reputed at one stage to be England's richest commoner. The son of William Beckford and Maria Hamilton, daughter of the Hon. George Hamilton, he served as a Member of Parliament for Wells in 1784-1790 and Hindon in 1790-1795 and 1806-1820. Beckford is remembered for a Gothic novel, Vathek (1786); for building the lost Fonthill Abbey in Wiltshire and Lansdown Tower ("Beckford's Tower") in Bath; and for his art collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gothic Antiquity: History, Romance, and the Architectural Imagination, 1760-1840 provides the first sustained scholarly account of the relationship between Gothic architecture and Gothic literature (fiction; poetry; drama) in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Although the relationship between literature and architecture is a topic that has long preoccupied scholars of the literary Gothic, there remains, to date, no monograph-length study of the intriguing and complex interactions between these two aesthetic forms. Equally, Gothic literature has received only the most cursory of treatments in art-historical accounts of the early Gothic Revival in architecture, interiors, and design. In addressing this gap in contemporary scholarship, Gothic Antiquity seeks to situate Gothic writing in relation to the Gothic-architectural theories, aesthetics, and practices with which it was contemporary, providing closely historicized readings of a wide selection of canonical and lesser-known texts and writers. Correspondingly, it shows how these architectural debates responded to, and were to a certain extent shaped by, what we have since come to identify as the literary Gothic mode. In both its 'survivalist' and 'revivalist' forms, the architecture of the Middle Ages in the long eighteenth century was always much more than a matter of style. Incarnating, for better or for worse, the memory of a vanished 'Gothic' age in the modern, enlightened present, Gothic architecture, be it ruined or complete, prompted imaginative reconstructions of the nation's past—a notable 'visionary' turn, as the antiquary John Pinkerton put it in 1788, in which Gothic writers, architects, and antiquaries enthusiastically participated. The volume establishes a series of dialogues between Gothic literature, architectural history, and the antiquarian interest in the material remains of the Gothic past, and argues that these discrete yet intimately related approaches to vernacular antiquity are most fruitfully read in relation to one another.

Romantic poetry abounds with allusions to the loss of Eden and the isolation of figures who are 'sick for home'. This book explores the way such thematic preoccupations are modified by the material reality of enforced travel away from home.

A frequent mist hovers before my eyes, and, through its medium, I see objects so faint and hazy, that both their colours and forms are apt to delude me. This is a rare confession, say the wise, for a traveller to make: pretty accounts will such a one give of outlandish countries: his correspondents must reap great benefit, no doubt, from such purblind observations. But stop, my good friends; patience a moment!-I really have not the vanity of pretending to make a single remark, during the whole of my journey: if-be contented with my visionary way of gazing, I am perfectly pleased; and shall write away as freely as Mr. A., Mr. B., Mr. C., and a million others whose letters are the admiration of the politest circles.

Book excerpt: Rosalind Cartwright, Ph.D. and Lynne Lamberg present new evidence that dreams are coherent symbolic reflections of the dreamer's mental state. They show that you can learn about yourself and your problems by studying your dreams. Crisis Dreaming provides simple, effective strategies for remembering your dreams and for "rewriting" better dream scripts while you sleep. These tactics are based on Dr. Cartwright's more than 25 years of scientific research. You can carry the insight you gain from your dreams into your waking life to help resolve depression and anxiety brought on by divorce, bereavement, serious illness, job loss, and other crises. In this book, you'll meet people who learned, with Dr. Cartwright's help, to use their dreams to change their daily lives. They gained control over the demons that plagued them. By following the guidelines in this book, you can achieve that goal, too.

Book excerpt: According to Bruce Redford, the Tour offered a heady combination of aesthetic, social political, and sexual experience, and it provided its alumni with a life-long source of cultural and political authority. Yet from the beginning the Tour was also viewed with deep suspicion: it was feared that the very experiences that completed the British gentleman might well undo him.
