Book excerpt: Ruby Martin had moved away from the small Georgia town where she had grown up; in hopes that all of the dark dreams of her childhood would no longer haunt her. She hated her Grandpa, Dr. Neil Hagen and that hate had kept her away for over six years until now. Grandpa's attorney, Marcus Briggs had notified her about Grandpa's death. It seemed that her presence was required at the old doc's funeral and reading of his Will. From the moment Ruby returned; the madness of the old Hagen house seemed to take control of her life. With it the horrors she had tried so hard to forget. In his will Dr. Hagen had placed the family curse onto Ruby' shoulders. If she did not follow his instructions everyone involved with her would be in danger. In her stubborn way, Ruby fought to keep control of her life but every where she turned there seemed to be no way out but to face the demons of Grandpa's curse. Would she forever be doomed to a life living in a place she hated without the man she loved? Could Ruby dare to hope for some way out of the horrors of the Hagen curse that would release her from The Dark Dreams of Yesterday? Was there hope that one day Ruby Martin might possibly find her silver lining behind those dark dreams?

Book excerpt: Local Whitby girl, Colette Shipley has become fascinated by the mysteries of the new art of photography and begins to create a record of her scenic home town with its tall ships and twin lighthouses, street urchins and weathered old fishermen. One day she encounters Arthur Newton who shares her passion for the town's unique atmosphere. Colette and Arthur begin a friendship that develops further. However, unbeknown to Collette, Arthur is also married with a young child. Arthur has tried to be content with his steady job at the railways and his marriage to his childhood sweetheart Rose. However even before meeting Colette, Arthur had been living a secret life, one which he has not shared with his family, friends or even Rose: he has a real talent for painting. His talent has blossomed under the tutelage of a sympathetic gallery owner, Ebenezer Hirst, and the patronage of Laurence Steel, an established painter in the Pre-Raphaelite school. Arthur is now faced with a difficult decision: remain comfortably in his railway job or risk the security of his wife and child by becoming a full-time artist. A decision not made any easier by his growing attraction for Colette...

Book excerpt: A lot of professors give talks titled 'The Last Lecture'. Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave, 'Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams', wasnt about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because time is all you have and you may find one day that you have less than you think). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humour, inspiration, and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our dreams speak to us in a language all of us can learn. Eloquently written by the dream specialist of our age, Appreciating Dreams develops a comprehensive technique for exploring dreams in small group settings. The shared trust and safety of a group structure can stimulate creativity and imagination and help the dreamer find her or his way into the dream. This approach to understanding dreams shows how natural and effective dream work with groups can be. It is always exciting to help the dreamer hear what the dream is saying in its own true voice. "In Appreciating Dreams, Ullman continues to empower the dreamer, providing detailed instructions for laypeople who are motivated by a quest for mutual growth and self-understanding." - Stanley Krippner, Ph.D., Saybrook Institute "Appreciating Dreams makes available to people, not just patients, a supportive, protected method for establishing a living contact with our valuable inner experiences." - Milton Kramer, M.D., University of Cincinnati "Appreciating Dreams is a wonderful book. It is a complete handbook for dream group leaders and for anyone interested in working with dreams in a group." - Ernest Hartmann, M.D., Tufts University AUTHOR (or ORGANIZATION) BLURB [to appear on back cover]: MONTAGUE ULLMAN, M.D., is a New Yorker who attended Townsend Harris Hall, the City College of New York, and New York University School of Medicine, where he received his medical degree in 1938. A graduate of the Comprehensive Course in Psychoanalysis at the New York Medical College, he became a member of the faculty there in 1950. In 1961, he left private practice to head a department of psychiatry at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. His interest in preventive psychiatry led to the opening of the first fully operational community mental health centers in New York City in 1967. His research interest led to the establishment of a sleep laboratory devoted to the exploration of the paranormal dream. Dr. Ullman is a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and is currently Clinical Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Ullman has written numerous papers on the neuro-physiological, clinical, and social aspects of dreams and is the author and coauthor of several books, including Dream Telepathy (1988) and Working With Dreams (1979), and is coeditor of the Handbook of States of Consciousness (1986) and The Variety of Dream Experience (1988).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreaming, according to my personal and convincing analysis, is the reviewing of the previous days activities and committing them to memory. Each dream episode is symbolized by what we already have stored in our memory banks. Emotions or events will evoke a symbol that will appear in the dream along with other symbols already encoded to create a story line that seems strange, funny, or even slightly confused. The massive numbers of memories we have would be impossible to categorize separately. It is much more efficient to draw out these encoded symbols from our memory and store yesterdays memorable happenings in the same code. If we do not have a symbolic representation for something or someone, then that person, item, or activity will represent itself and create a new code. What compounds the mystery of symbolism is that each individual has established his own very personal ones throughout his own life experiences. Thus, no one is truly able to decipher anothers dream. A dream can even be the result of a radio or TV story heard during sleep and absorbed into the dream. The dialogue may be repeated quite accurately but the dreamer creates his own picture images. I have experienced this quite often, waking to ask, Why did she or he say this or that? and compare the reality to my dream scenes. (Perhaps we should give credence to the possibility that we might learn during sleep while a recorded voice recites the lesson repeatedly.) On the other hand, watching a TV program that impresses or evokes certain emotions can trigger a dream later with our own symbols to create our own episode. A sound can produce a quick little dream. Instantaneously - between a click before an alarm rings and the ring itself can cause a flash of a dream according to what that sound conjured up from our memory bank. If a sound does not wake us, we will weave it into our dream story in marvelous ways. Just a touch that probably would be unexplainable unless one woke up to the ongoing sound and recognize it as having been in our dream. Recurring dreams, I am convinced, represent a certain emotion or feeling that we experienced somewhere back in time and that scene is brought forward whenever it is needed to depict that emotion. The scene is representative of a prior emotional experience and comes forth as the same scene in our dream each time that same emotion is reflected from the previous day. Thus the recurrence. Our life experiences being different, so would our storage areas be comprised of different methods of remembering. The swimming scenes that recur occasionally in my dreams are always very pleasing to me. Even though I do not swim, simply watching swimmers evokes a relaxing, soothing sensation within me. Im sure the previous day had pleasurable times that were being reflected. On the other hand, when I dream of flooding or turbulent water, a negative experience in the previous day is revived in that same nights dream as an unpleasant water scene. Actually, the last swimming episode in my life was a near disaster for me and perhaps that particular occasion was the one that influences the negative evocation of water. Yet, strangely enough, watching people swim is a pleasure to me, hence the positive sensation. Other emotions anxiety, sadness, fear, anger, joy, etc., are represented in a symbolic manner that is unique to us alone, as is the original encoded episode. We require codes or symbols as mental shorthand to store in a compact unit the massive number of thoughts, activities and emotions we experience during a lifetime. The recurrence of certain episodes or metaphors eliminates the necessity to store another code. I believe it is erroneous to infer mystical or psychological interpretations. Dreams are a natural function of the marvelous composition of the human body such as blinking, swallowing, smiling, etc. There has not been a single dream that I have been unable to reconcile with the activities

Book excerpt: For both students and practicing counselors, this book fills the gaps that exist between many current academic programs and practitioner’s needs for focused training on how to better assist clients with dream interpretations. Its main focus is on dreams concerning family members and other major figures in the dreamer's life with whom he or she interacts. Readers will first learn how to understand and use their own dreams, and then how to apply this in order to facilitate their clients’ interpretations of dreams. They will be amazed and fascinated by the issues, emotions, and problem-solving suggestions that are often revealed as they guide their clients' use of a personalized dream interpretation method developed by the author. Through the use of a detailed case example of a client and her dreams, the author shows how each step of this method can be applied and carried out in practice and is easily integrated with contemporary psychotherapies, especially cognitive behavior therapies.
