Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Impressive . . . [Cristina García’s] story is about three generations of Cuban women and their separate responses to the revolution. Her special feat is to tell it in a style as warm and gentle as the ‘sustaining aromas of vanilla and almond,’ as rhythmic as the music of Beny Moré.”—Time Cristina García’s acclaimed book is the haunting, bittersweet story of a family experiencing a country’s revolution and the revelations that follow. The lives of Celia del Pino and her husband, daughters, and grandchildren mirror the magical realism of Cuba itself, a landscape of beauty and poverty, idealism and corruption. Dreaming in Cuban is “a work that possesses both the intimacy of a Chekov story and the hallucinatory magic of a novel by Gabriel García Márquez” (The New York Times). In celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the novel’s original publication, this edition features a new introduction by the author. Praise for Dreaming in Cuban “Remarkable . . . an intricate weaving of dramatic events with the supernatural and the cosmic . . . evocative and lush.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Captures the pain, the distance, the frustrations and the dreams of these family dramas with a vivid, poetic prose.”—The Washington Post “Brilliant . . . With tremendous skill, passion and humor, García just may have written the definitive story of Cuban exiles and some of those they left behind.”—The Denver Post

Book excerpt: Examining novels, critical editions, gift books, translations, and illustrated books, as well as the communities who made them, Dreaming in Books tells a wide-ranging story of the book's identity at the turn of the nineteenth century. In so doing, it shows how many of the most pressing modern communicative concerns are not unique to the digital age but emerged with a particular sense of urgency during the bookish upheavals of the romantic era. In revisiting the book's rise through the prism of romantic literature, Piper aims to revise our assumptions about romanticism, the medium of the printed book, and, ultimately, the future of the book in our so-called digital age."--Pub. desc.

Book excerpt: A world-renowned expert in lucid dreaming and Tibetan dream yoga guides us into the tradition’s daytime practices, a complement to the nighttime practices taught in his previous book Dream Yoga. Most of us are absolutely certain that we’re awake here and now—it’s a given, right? Yet, according to Tibet’s dream yoga tradition, ordinary waking life is no more real than the illusions of our nightly dreams. In his previous book Dream Yoga, Andrew Holecek guided us into Tibetan Buddhism’s nocturnal path of lucid dreaming and other dimensions of sleeping consciousness. Now, with Dreams of Light, he offers us an in-depth, step-by-step guide to its daytime practices. Known as the “illusory form” practices, these teachings include insights, meditations, and actions to help us realize the dreamlike nature of our lives. Through an immersive exploration of the tradition, beginners and seasoned practitioners alike will learn everything they need to deeply transform both their sleeping and waking hours. “If you’ve struggled to awaken in your dreams,” teaches Holecek, “these techniques will often spark spontaneous lucidity during sleep. And if you’re already a successful lucid dreamer, they will open you to new depths of experience throughout your day.” For those wishing to explore Tibetan Buddhism’s profound path for awakening to the true nature of reality—day or night—Dreams of Light shows us the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophecies, Visions, Occurrences and Dreams is an apocalyptic book. Since 1990, Raymond Aguilera began to receive prophecies, visions and warnings from God about the end of our world as we know it. These messages range from abortion, to the New Age movement, to Pastors who have misled the flock. They reveal things to come, things that now are and things that should not be... From hope, to love, to doom, to a new beginning, herein lies a broad range of insight from a whole new perspective. The prophecies are simple and straight forward, written from a first-hand perspective. They fly in the face of orthodox tradition and are a thorn in the side to everyone who has already made up his mind and heart on how the end is to come and who God is. This has the potential of being one of the most controversial books of the year.

Book excerpt: The #1 bestselling book on work life balance. It's time. Time to reclaim your life. Time to reclaim your potential. Time to start thriving, not just surviving. The traditional Bucket List is outdated. In today’s fast-paced world, simply writing down fleeting wishes isn't enough. You need a strategic, structured approach to turn your aspirations into actionable plans and make your dreams come true within the next 6-18 months. This book reveals the approaches that powered great achievements like Elon Musk building Tesla, the Apollo 11 moon landing, and Roald Amundsen's South Pole expedition, demonstrating how these stories and more all use the same concepts and principles that form the backbone of the Dreams List method. Imagine if you could turn an Apollo 11-level of dream into reality and design a life that aligns with your deepest desires. In just three years, with an income no higher than that of a police officer, nurse, or entry-level accountant, Alex Funk did this. He took 86 flights, bought two investment properties, completed a marathon on a treadmill, medaled in a bodybuilding contest, and crossed off 252 other dreams from his list—all before his 23rd birthday. This journey started in 2020, amidst the global pandemic, when he made the unconventional choice to drop out of college and return to his thousand-person hometown. Crafting this remarkable life wasn’t a product of financial leverage but of this revolutionary concept: The Dreams List. The Dreams List is a powerful tool for articulating and pursuing deeply resonant goals. It's not just about listing dreams; it's a methodical approach to breaking down lofty aspirations into manageable, actionable steps. This process transforms vague desires into a clear path forward, guiding each step from current reality to desired future. In this book, you will learn: How to Transform Aspirations into Actionable Plans: Learn the step-by-step method to turn lofty dreams into achievable goals. The Art of Lifestyle Design: Discover how to consciously design a lifestyle that aligns with your deepest desires, rather than default societal expectations. Strategies to Overcome Common Barriers: Practical advice for surpassing the usual "no money, no time" obstacles that prevent many from pursuing their dreams. Maximizing Productivity for Dream Achievement: Gain insight into executive-level time management and energy maintenance to make dream-chasing practically sustainable. The Importance of Environment and Habits: Understand how the right surroundings and consistent behaviors can dramatically increase the likelihood of success. This book is an invitation to explore the tool that promises not just to wish for more but to actualize your dreams. It is for the doers who have always wanted more but could never find the right path. The Dreams List beckons all who dare to dream bigger but struggle to find their way. Whether your ambitions involve globe-trotting, entrepreneurial ventures, or personal achievements, this book is your guide to thriving, not just surviving. Book excerpt: The story of one of the most significant and overlooked seasons in professional baseball, told through the travails of the Spokane Indians On June 24, 1946, a bus carrying the Spokane Indians baseball team crashed to the bottom of a deep ravine in Washington state’s Cascade mountains, killing nine players. To this day, it remains the deadliest accident in the history of American professional sports. In Season of Shattered Dreams: Postwar Baseball, the Spokane Indians, and a Tragic Bus Crash That Changed Everything, Eric Vickrey details the series of events that occurred before, during, and after the heartbreaking accident. Vickrey chronicles the often-overlooked impact that the end of World War II had on the major and minor leagues, now crowded with players returning from military service. The Spokane Indians were no exception, with several top prospects and former big leaguers arriving that season. The journeys of three Spokane players in particular—Vic Picetti, Ben Geraghty, and Jack Lohrke—reveal the impact of the war on players’ lives, the struggles of a minor-league career, and the devastating impact of that catastrophic crash. The Spokane Indians were not your average minor-league team, and though their story has been largely forgotten with time, it is one that deserves to be told. Featuring original interviews, as well as letters and photos from the personal collections of players and their families, Season of Shattered Dreams offers incredible insight into one of the most singular seasons in professional baseball.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the 1908 Young Turk Revolution from the perspectives of Arabs, Armenians, and Jews. The Ottoman revolution of 1908 is a study in contradictions—a positive manifestation of modernity intended to reinstate constitutional rule, yet ultimately a negative event that shook the fundamental structures of the empire, opening up ethnic, religious, and political conflicts. Shattered Dreams of Revolution considers this revolutionary event to tell the stories of three important groups: Arabs, Armenians, and Jews. The revolution raised these groups’ expectations for new opportunities of inclusion and citizenship. But as post-revolutionary festivities ended, these euphoric feelings soon turned to pessimism and a dramatic rise in ethnic tensions. The undoing of the revolutionary dreams could be found in the very foundations of the revolution itself. Inherent ambiguities and contradictions in the revolution’s goals and the reluctance of both the authors of the revolution and the empire’s ethnic groups to come to a compromise regarding the new political framework of the empire ultimately proved untenable. The revolutionaries had never been wholeheartedly committed to constitutionalism, thus constitutionalism failed to create a new understanding of Ottoman citizenship, grant equal rights to all citizens, and bring them under one roof in a legislative assembly. Today as the Middle East experiences another set of revolutions, these early lessons of the Ottoman Empire, of unfulfilled expectations and ensuing discontent, still provide important insights into the contradictions of hope and disillusion seemingly inherent in revolution. Praise for Shattered Dreams of Revolution “The sad fate of revolutions, from moments of euphoria and hope through the descent into authoritarianism, has seldom been told as persuasively as in this unique book. Bedross Der Matossian offers the stories of three peoples—Armenians, Arabs, and Jews—who greeted the 1908 Young Turk revolution with joy and optimism, only to find their expectations of liberation and modernity quickly turn into disillusion and brutal bloodletting.” —Ronald Grigor Suny, The University of Michigan “Bedross Der Matossian explains with new historical evidence why and how the Young Turk revolution ultimately failed to attract Armenians, Jews, and Arabs to its cause. He makes a genuine contribution to our understanding of ethno-religious conflict and nationalism, suggesting interesting parallels with the failings of today’s Middle East revolutions.” —Philip S. Khoury, Massachusetts Institute of Technology “A masterly account of the Young Turk Revolution . . . . Few scholars have devised such a stimulating and a multivocal framework for understanding the post-1908 realities that shaped the last Ottoman decade” —Eyal Ginio, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
