Book Synopsis Little Dancer Aged Fourteen by : Camille Laurens
Download or read book Little Dancer Aged Fourteen written by Camille Laurens and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This absorbing, heartfelt work uncovers the story of the real dancer behind Degas’s now-iconic sculpture, shedding light on the struggles of late nineteenth-century Parisian life. She is famous throughout the world, but how many know her name? You can admire her figure in Washington, Paris, London, New York, Dresden, or Copenhagen, but where is her grave? We know only her age, fourteen, and the work that she did—because it was already grueling work, at an age when children today are sent to school. In the 1880s, she danced as a “little rat” at the Paris Opera, and what is often a dream for young girls now wasn’t a dream for her. She was fired after several years of intense labor; the director had had enough of her repeated absences. She had been working another job, even two, because the few pennies the Opera paid weren’t enough to keep her and her family fed. She was a model, posing for painters or sculptors—among them Edgar Degas. Drawing on a wealth of historical material as well as her own love of ballet and personal experiences of loss, Camille Laurens presents a compelling, compassionate portrait of Marie van Goethem and the world she inhabited that shows the importance of those who have traditionally been overlooked in the study of art.

Book excerpt: Do you ever wonder why your dreams often contain recurring symbol or themes? Have you been haunted by recurring dreams of being chased, being naked in public or having your teeth fall out? Based on her work with dreamers analyzing their own recurring dream symbols, Kathleen Sullivan explains that working recurrent dreams as a series is the key to unleashing the healing force of these symbols. Fourteen dreamers participate in the study illustrating the process of uncovering the profound meaning within each recurring symbol. These are transformational stories of dreamers engaging their own recurring symbols leading to a new wholeness and deep level of growth and understanding. +

Download or read book Dare to Dream written by Annette M. Brown and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book looks into the lives of the Bible characters Ruth, Naomi (her mother-in-law), and Boaz (Ruth’s future husband), as they overcome challenging situations and struggle not to allow their hidden hopes and dreams to die without trying to achieve them. The characters purposefully searched for conditions of hope in things they saw, heard about, or perceived to have potential of being beneficial and by accepting wise advice and kindness from other people. The book is encouraging for anyone struggling with situations in life that leave them feeling discouraged and forces them to search for conditions of hope and ways to make their hopes and dreams come true by becoming proactive and working on a plan of action. Their story is also about relationships, in the natural and spiritual sense, as demonstrated by the connection between them and a kinsman-redeemer who serves to make another person’s life restored and complete. As one reads through the book, he or she gains a sense that more than simply human effort was at work, but it was the hand of God orchestrating every detailed move, and as a result, each character realized and accredited it all to God as being their kinsman-redeemer. Although Boaz assisted in helping Ruth’s family overcome challenges, it was leading them to find a relationship with the true kinsman-redeemer, Jesus the Messiah. So the questions for the reader are: What is preventing you to Dare to Dream? Why not search for conditions of hope in your situation and make every attempt to fulfill them, because without trying, your hopes and dreams will die? Everyone has hopes and dreams that they hold in their minds and keep silently to themselves. Therefore, when people apply themselves, it becomes possible to move forward to experience at least four types of dreams, such as addressed in the chapters: “Shattered Dreams,” “Working the Dream,” “Rebirth of a Dream,” and “Fulfilled Dreams.”

Book excerpt: Few stories were as widely known during the Middle Ages as the account of Iwein and Laudine, which appeared in French, Welsh, English, Norse, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, and two German variants. The older German version, that by the Swabian nobleman Hartmann von Aue, won instant popularity and became a model of form, style, and language for the many courtly epics which his countrymen composed up to the beginning of the modern period. In recent years, his Iwein has enjoyed a remarkable revival among medieval scholars as traditional interpretations have been challenged by new ones.

Book Synopsis Instant Millionaires by : Max Gunther
Download or read book Instant Millionaires written by Max Gunther and published by Harriman House Limited. This book was released on 2011-01-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book you will meet three dozen impatient people. They weren't satisfied with the slow, plodding, money-saving route to financial security, the safe route that most of us feel stuck with. They wanted instant wealth - and they got it. As Max Gunther points out, our folklore frowns on the idea of quick money. Our cultural heros have generally been plodders, as in the fable about the race between a tortoise and a hare. "In the fable, the hare loses. The stories in this book are not fables. They are true. In these stories, the hares win." They are a richly varied lot, these happy hares. Gunther opens with a few dazzling millionaire legends, such as the man who invented Monopoly. You'll then meet such fascinating characters as: - Sam Wyly, who made it in the computer industry - Harvey Shuster, who beat the stock market - Dan Renn, who grew rapidly rich by applying salesmanship to another man's idea - Howard Brown, who deliberately decided to be rich and became a multi-millionaire within three years. - A group of men who made fast fortunes on fads such as the Hula Hoop and the Frisbee. - Jean Nidetch, who organised the fabulously successful Weight Watchers These stores illustrate that the dream of quick money isn't such a ridiculous dream after all. Maybe you've been harboring this kind of dream yourself. You've squelched the dream because you've been brainwashed by too many stories about tortoises beating hares. Everybody tells you your dream is laughable, impractical. All right, get ready for a revelation. Read this delightful collection of tales about hares who won. When you've read them, maybe you'll decide to run with them.
Book Synopsis The Dream in Primitive Cultures by : Jackson Steward Lincoln
Download or read book The Dream in Primitive Cultures written by Jackson Steward Lincoln and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because many primitive cultures assign equal value to both the fantasy and external world, dreams serve as their guides to both ritual and individual behavior. Trained in anthropology and psychology, the author of this work collected and examined more material than ever studied previously to demonstrate the key role of dreams in primitive society. Combining material from library as well as field research, this analysis opens with a historical review of dream interpretation, exploring the structure, theory, and function of dreams in primitive cultures and examining their predominant symbols, types, and forms. Focusing chiefly on Native American dreams, the study defines their significance to the individual as well as their relationship to the culture pattern.
Book Synopsis Dream Like a Champion by : Brandon Vogel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since becoming the Nebraska women's volleyball coach in 2000, John Cook has led the team to four national championships, seven NCAA semifinal appearances, and the nation's top winning percentage in women's volleyball. In Dream Like a Champion Cook shares the coaching and leadership philosophy that has enabled him to become one of the game's winningest coaches. Growing up in San Diego, Cook acquired his coaching philosophy from his experiences first as a football coach, then as a student of the sport of volleyball on the beaches of Southern California. After a stint as an assistant volleyball coach at Nebraska, he returned to Nebraska as head coach in 2000 and won the national championship in his first season. Even with a bar set so high, Cook saw at Nebraska's tradition-rich program the potential for even greater growth and success. He decided to focus on higher expectations, training, motivation, goal setting, and other ways to build the strongest teams possible. In Dream Like a Champion Cook shares the philosophy behind Nebraska's culture of success and reveals how he's had to learn, evolve, and be coached himself, even in his fifth decade as a coach. With openness and candor he delivers insights about his methods and passes along lessons that can be used by leaders in any field. Cook also shares behind-the-scenes anecdotes about Nebraska volleyball moments and players--and how he coaches and teaches his players about life beyond the court.
