Book excerpt: There are millions of high school students in the world who write exams and tests every year. These exams and tests are supposed to get them ready for the real world. Most of them will pass these exams and tests but sadly most will fail in the practicals of real life. Most of them will be exposed to real life pressures which were not part of their curriculum at school, and when real life issues and problems show up in their lives, most of our students will not be able to handle the pressure, so most give up. Our students leave high school with high hopes but life punches them in the face and they realize that life is not just about grades or academics, it's also about mindset and attitude. Our world faces issues like unemployment, poverty, teen pregnancy, crime, depression etc. These problems can be fixed if we change the mindsets of our high school students before they leave high school, because they are the future of the world. After leaving high school young people get frustrated and they release their frustrations through negative activities. Let's teach our high school students things they can use after high school, even if they don't go to university, because only a small percentage of them will go. The vast majority won't go. Let's teach them: *To believe in themselves and in their goals.* Persistence.* To have a vision after high school.* How to hustle.* To never give up no matter how hard the situation.* Self discipline.* How to face their fears and. * How to use their imagination. Dream chasers after high school was written to teach our high school students all of the above and more.

Book excerpt: How the immigration battle plays out in America, from curriculum disputes to federal raids to the civil rights activism of young “Dreamers.” Illegal immigration continues to roil American politics. The right-wing media stir up panic over “anchor babies,” job stealing, welfare dependence, bilingualism, al-Qaeda terrorists disguised as Latinos, even a conspiracy by Latinos to “retake” the Southwest. State and local governments have passed more than 300 laws that attempt to restrict undocumented immigrants' access to hospitals, schools, food stamps, and driver's licenses. Federal immigration authorities stage factory raids that result in arrests, deportations, and broken families—and leave owners scrambling to fill suddenly open jobs. The DREAM Act, which would grant permanent residency to high school graduates brought here as minors, is described as “amnesty.” And yet polls show that a majority of Americans support some kind of path to citizenship for those here illegally. What is going on? In this book, John Tirman shows how the resistance to immigration in America is more cultural than political. Although cloaked in language about jobs and secure borders, the cultural resistance to immigration expresses a fear that immigrants are changing the dominant white, Protestant, “real American” culture. Tirman describes the “raid mentality” of our response to immigration, which seeks violent solutions for a social phenomenon. He considers the culture clash over Chicano ethnic studies in Tucson, examines the consequences of an immigration raid in New Bedford, and explores the civil rights activism of young “Dreamers.” The current “round them up, deport them, militarize the border” approach, Tirman shows, solves nothing.

Most of the time I felt like I wasn't normal. I don't think I'll ever be normal. Compared to everybody I felt like an outsider. Kids would always ask why are you in those extra classes and getting extra help? This led to a lot of unwanted attention. That led to more unwanted feelings, embarrassment, and a lack of confidence in myself, which still affects me to this day at 28. Depressed Angry Self-conscious Hated myself Can't read fast Suck at spelling Never thought I would be good enough A Dyslexic kid can't be successful As time went by I was always looking for answers and trying to figure out this game we call life. There was no light at the end of the tunnel for me. It was pitch black and went on and on. As the tunnel kept going, I started to get a little darker and deader inside. In the last few years, I have started to see light at the end of the tunnel. I can run away with my tail between my legs, or suck it up and fight back for once in my life and keep going through the darkness. Average or below average has been what I thought of myself my whole life. I'm now aiming for something bigger and better than average. In the last five years, I have read over 50 books and in the last seven written four books. I decided to turn the page in my own book and turn my lack of skills in reading and writing into a new strength. Life is not a guarantee and life is short. Now is the time to accomplish your goals and start living. This is The World Through My Dyslexic Eyes and how I see it. What does your world look like? Do you know what you want your world to look like? If not, then maybe my unique story can help lead you in the right direction.

Book excerpt: This book investigates domestic migration and migration intentions in China from the individual, city, and provincial levels. Since the 1990s, accompanying the rapid urbanization, an important feature of China’s social transition is its large-scale interregional migration, which has reshaped China’s economic geography and population distribution and greatly affected the socio-economic development. The floating population, migrants working and living in the destination cities without local hukou, have aroused wide public concern in the past decades. Based on China’s national population census data and China Migrants Dynamic Survey data, this book comprehensively employs statistical analysis, spatial analysis, network analysis, econometric and spatial econometric methods to analyze the spatial pattern and influencing mechanism of internal migration and migration intentions of floating population from different levels and different perspectives. The research results of this book have significant policy implications for the urban governance on the floating population. The novelty of this book is that it comprehensively investigates domestic migration and migration intentions from the individual, city and provincial levels, combining their spatial patterns and network structures. It not only provides a wealth of case studies for domestic migration research in China, but also broadens the research scope of spatial demography by employing new methods of spatial econometrics (such as MGWR and ESF). This book is suitable for undergraduates and graduates majoring in Human Geography, Regional Economics, Urban Planning and Urban Governance, as well as related researchers and practitioners.

Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research. Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street. What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful? Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 Rules for Life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.

The essays in this collection examine how success for children relates to education, family, gender, race, class, community, and the nation. It answers the following questions: How is success for children represented in literature, cinema, and popular media? In what ways are these images grounded in the historical, political, and cultural contexts in which they are produced and consumed? How does childhood agency influence ideas about success in Asia? Highlighting the similarities and differences in how success is defined for children and young adults in Japan, South Korea, People’s Republic of China, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and India, this volume argues that success is an important keyword in the literary and cultural study of childhood in Asia.

Book excerpt: The Obama White House staff invites us behind-the-scenes of history for a deeply personal and moving look at the presidency and how the president’s staff can change the nation “West Wingers is exceptional. . . . We have so much to learn from these stories.” —President Biden When we elect a president, we elect with them an entire team that will join them in the West Wing to help run the country. Each of these staffers has a story to tell, and in West Wingers, Barack Obama’s White House staff reveals how these extraordinary citizens shape the presidency and the nation. In these moving and revealing personal stories, eighteen Obama staffers bring us deep inside the presidency, offering intimate accounts of how they made it to the White House, what they witnessed, and what they accomplished there. We hear from a married gay staffer pushing the president towards marriage equality; a senior aide working to implement the Affordable Care Act while battling Stage IV cancer; a hijab-wearing Muslim adviser accompanying the President to a mosque. In each one we see the human face of government, staffers devoting themselves to the issues that have defined their lives. From the triumphs of Obamacare and marriage equality to the tragedy of the Charleston shooting, this book tells the history of the Obama presidency through the men and women who worked tirelessly to support his vision for America. More than just a history though, West Wingers is an inspiring call to arms for public service, a testament to the possibility of real social change, and a powerful demonstration of what true diversity, inclusivity, and progress can look like in America. “These deeply moving stories offer more than a fascinating view into the window of history: they show us how hope becomes real, sustainable change.” —Valerie Jarrett, former senior advisor to President Obama
