Book excerpt: An exploration of dreams as a spiritual source of healing and inner guidance for your health and well-being • 2018 Nautilus Silver Award • Shares stories--confirmed by pathology reports--from subjects in medical research projects whose dreams diagnosed illness and helped heal their lives • Explores medical studies and ongoing research on the diagnostic power of precognitive dreams, including Dr. Burk’s own medical research • Includes an introduction to dream journaling and interpretation techniques Your dreams can provide inner guidance filled with life-saving information. Since ancient Egypt and Greece, people have relied on the art of dreaming to diagnose illness and get answers to personal life challenges. Now, dreams are making a grand reappearance in the medical arena as recent scientific research and medical pathology reports validate the diagnostic abilities of precognitive dreams. Are we stepping back into the future as modern medical tests show dreams can be early warning signs of cancer and other diseases? Showcasing the important role of dreams and their power to detect and heal illness, Dr. Larry Burk and Kathleen O’Keefe-Kanavos share amazing research and true stories of physical and emotional healings triggered by dreams. The authors explore medical studies and ongoing research on the diagnostic power of precognitive dreams, including Dr. Burk’s own research on dreams that come true and can be medically validated. They share detailed stories--all confirmed by pathology reports--from subjects in medical research projects whose dreams diagnosed illness and helped heal their lives, including Kathleen’s own story as a three-time breast cancer survivor whose dreams diagnosed her cancer even when it was missed by her doctors. Alongside these stories of survival and faith, the authors also include an introduction to dream journaling and interpretation, allowing the reader to develop trust in their dreams as a spiritual source of healing and inner guidance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a shadow that comes to her bed at night, an invisible thing that sits on her chest and tells her that if she's good and quiet, it will make her feel good. She would nod and be good. She has never not been good before. She doesn't know what saying no would do, but saying yes means it would touch her all over, and make her feel so much more than good. The dreams started after her eighteenth birthday and she thinks it's just her imagination, just very weird dreams. But then the marks on her body start bleeding into reality and the family doctor has her immediately institutionalized. A part of her is worried that it's all just in her head and they would find something wrong with her. A bigger part of her is worried that they will find out that it’s real and just how much she loves it. ~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~ "You can just click the emergency button here to let us know if something's wrong, okay?" she continues. "And tonight, I'll be the one sitting on the other side of the glass to observe your sleeping patterns, so there's nothing you need to be afraid of." Winter smiles at her gratefully, "That's very reassuring. Thank you." She doesn't look too reassured though. If anything, she looks a bit worried. Were the others right? She seems too sweet to be making up medical conditions. She seems to be eating well but somehow is still losing weight. The blood work will be done tomorrow, but for tonight, she will be put under observation. She wasn't being entirely truthful about being on the other side of the glass to watch, though. That would take up too much time and she has other patients that she needs to keep an eye out on. She checks in on Scott first, who suffers from insomnia and is here under some sort of medical study. He is taking placebos tonight, so she doesn't expect him to fall asleep. She thinks it's cruel to put an insomniac on placebos, but apparently they need to make sure that the trial medication they have prescribed him with are actually effective. She's just a nurse. She doesn't make the rules around here. She moves onto a young boy who suffers from night terrors, an elderly man who has been complaining of chest pains in the middle of the night, and several more patients with different symptoms before finally stopping into Winter's room. Her blood runs cold. The young woman is asleep, eyes closed, chest rising and falling lightly, blond hair around her head like a halo, but she is not alone. There is a man standing by her bed, watching her sleep. At first glance, she thought she was looking at one of the younger doctors, but he is not in the standard scrubs. He is overdressed in his three-piece suit. That's the Grim Reaper, her thoughts tell her. You’re seeing things, the practical part of her mind immediately amends. Except the more she looks, the more she realizes there's something wrong with the picture. He has a shadow that is too dark and too big. It spreads out from behind him, growing bigger the longer she stares at him, swallowing the light and dropping the room into a shadow, a black emptiness. She rubs her eyes and realizes that it's not an optical illusion. The shadow is growing bigger, reaching out and curling around the room, like branches of a tree reaching out towards the moon in the darkness, except the moon is the light that is illuminating the room and that light is quickly disappearing. He is going to swallow the poor girl up, she thinks to herself in panic and lunges forward, forgetting protocol completely as she bangs on the glass mirror. "Stop that!" she says, as though that's enough to stop the man- the creature, from doing what he's doing. He hasn't done anything yet. "Stop!" she screams again, louder this time, and then has the mental capacity to press the speaker by the side of the window. "Sir, you have to leave the room right now! You're not allowed in there," she says, her voice shaking. The tip of her finger is pressing the button so harshly that the tip of her nail loses blood flow, going pale and cold. She is aware that she's shaking lightly, though she's not sure what she's more afraid of, that the man would hurt the girl, or that he would come out here and hurt her.

What power can bruise the sky? Two worlds are poised on the brink of a vicious war. By way of a staggering deception, Karou has taken control of the chimaera's rebellion and is intent on steering its course away from dead-end vengeance. The future rests on her. When the brutal angel emperor brings his army to the human world, Karou and Akiva are finally reunited -- not in love, but in tentative alliance against their common enemy. Book excerpt: “Nabokovian in his caustic charm and sexy intelligence, Simic perceives the mythic in the mundane and pinpoints the perpetual suffering that infuses human life with both agony and bliss. . . . And he is the master of juxtaposition, lining up the unlikeliest of pairings and contrasts as he explores the nexuses of madness and prophecy, hell and paradise, lust and death.”—Donna Seaman, Booklist "As one reads the pithy, wise, occasionally cranky epigrams and vignettes that fill this volume, there is the definite sense that we are getting a rare glimpse into several decades worth of private journals--and, by extension are privy to the tickings of an accomplished and introspective literary mind."—Rain Taxi Written over many years, this book is a collection of notebook entries by our current Poet Laureate. Excerpts: Stupidity is the secret spice historians have difficulty identifying in this soup we keep slurping. Ars poetica: trying to make your jailers laugh. American identity is really about having many identities simultaneously. We came to America to escape our old identities, which the multiculturalists now wish to restore to us. Ambiguity is the world’s condition. Poetry flirts with ambiguity. As a “picture of reality” it is truer than any other. This doesn’t mean that you’re supposed to write poems no one understands. The twelve girls in the gospel choir sang as if dogs were biting their asses. What an outrage! This very moment gone forever!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreams from the Monster Factory tells the true story of Sunny Schwartz's extraordinary work in the criminal justice system and how her profound belief in people's ability to change is transforming the San Francisco jails and the criminals incarcerated there. With an immediacy made possible by a twenty-seven-year career, Schwartz immerses the reader in the troubling and complex realities of U.S. jails, the monster factories -- places that foster violence, rage and, ultimately, better criminals. But by working in the monster factories, Schwartz also discovered her dream of a criminal justice system that empowers victims and reforms criminals. Charismatic and deeply compassionate, Sunny Schwartz grew up on Chicago's south side in the 1960s. She fought with her family, struggled through school and floundered as she tried to make something of herself. Bucking expectations of failure, she applied to a law school that didn't require a college degree, passed the bar and began her life's work in the criminal justice system. Eventually she grew disheartened by the broken, inflexible system, but instead of quitting, she reinvented it, making jail a place that could change people for the better. In 1997, Sunny launched the Resolve to Stop the Violence Project (RSVP), a groundbreaking program for the San Francisco Sheriff 's Department. RSVP, which has cut recidivism for violent rearrests by up to 80 percent, brings together victims and offenders in a unique correctional program that empowers victims and requires offenders to take true responsibility for their actions and eliminate their violent behavior. Sunny Schwartz's faith in humanity, her compassion and her vision are inspiring. In Dreams from the Monster Factory she goes beyond statistics and sensational portrayals of prison life to offer an intimate, harrowing and revelatory chronicle of crime, punishment and, ultimately, redemption.

Book excerpt: "This fascinating little volume explores the stuff that dreams are made of and the role the pandemic is playing in them. The dreams from Barrett's survey are riveting vignettes--from terrifying to touching to hilarious. Her decades of scientific research and clinical practice inform incisive commentary on what these dreams reveal about society's response. She offers simple exercises for managing anxieties over COVID-19 and for inspiring adaption in this unique period of history. A great read!" -Amy Tan, author of The Joy Luck Club DREAM: I looked down at my stomach and saw dark blue stripes. I "remembered" these were the first sign of being infected with COVID-19. DREAM: My home was a Covid-19 test center. People weren't wearing masks. I'm taken aback because I wasn't asked to be a test site. I'm worried that my husband and son (who actually lives out of state) will catch it because of my job as a healthcare worker. DREAM: I was a giant antibody. I was so angry about COVID-19 that it gave me superpowers, and I rampaged around attacking all the virus I could find. I woke so energized! Since the COVID-19 pandemic swept around the world, people have reported unusually a vivid and bizarre dream lives. The virus itself is the star of many--literally or in one of its metaphoric guises. As a dream researcher at Harvard Medical School, Deirdre Barrett was immediately curious to see what our dream lives would tell us about our deepest reactions to this unprecedented disaster. Pandemic Dreams draws on her survey of over 9,000 dreams about the COVID-19 crisis. It describes how dreaming has reflected each aspect of the pandemic: fear of catching the virus, reactions to sheltering at home, work changes, homeschooling, and an individual's increased isolation or crowding. Some patterns are quite similar to other crises Dr. Barrett has studied such as 9/11, Kuwaitis during the Iraqi Occupation, POWs in WWII Nazi prison camps, and Middle Easterners during the Arab Spring. There are some very distinctive metaphors for COVID-19, however: bug-attack dreams and ones of invisible monsters. These reflect that this crisis is less visible or concrete than others we have faced. Over the past three months, dreams have progressed from fearful depictions of the mysterious new threat . . . to impatience with restrictions . . . to more fear again as the world begins to reopen. And dreams have just begun to consider the big picture: how society may change. The book offers guidance on how we can best utilize our newly supercharged dream lives to aid us through the crisis and beyond. It explains practical exercises for dream interpretation, reduction of nightmares, and incubation of helpful, problem-solving dreams. It also examines the larger arena of what these collective dreams tell us about our instinctive, unconscious responses to the threat and how we might integrate them for more livable policies through these times. Deirdre Barrett, PhD is a dream researcher at Harvard Medical School. She has written five books including Pandemic Dreams and The Committee of Sleep, and edited four including Trauma and Dreams. She is Past President of The International Association for the Study of Dreams and editor of its journal, DREAMING.
