Book Synopsis Drawing on Architecture by : Jordan Kauffman
Download or read book Drawing on Architecture written by Jordan Kauffman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How architectural drawings emerged as aesthetic objects, promoted by a network of galleries, collectors, and institutions, and how this changed the understanding of architecture. Prior to the 1970s, buildings were commonly understood to be the goal of architectural practice; architectural drawings were seen simply as a means to an end. But, just as the boundaries of architecture itself were shifting at the end of the twentieth century, the perception of architectural drawings was also shifting; they began to be seen as autonomous objects outside the process of building. In Drawing on Architecture, Jordan Kauffman offers an account of how architectural drawings—promoted by a network of galleries and collectors, exhibitions and events—emerged as aesthetic objects and ultimately attained status as important cultural and historical artifacts, and how this was both emblematic of changes in architecture and a catalyst for these changes. Kauffman traces moments of critical importance to the evolution of the perception of architectural drawings, beginning with exhibitions that featured architectural drawings displayed in ways that did not elucidate buildings but treated them as meaningful objects in their own right. When architectural drawings were seen as having intrinsic value, they became collectible, and Kauffman chronicles early collectors, galleries, and sales. He discusses three key exhibitions at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York; other galleries around the world that specialized in architectural drawings; the founding of architecture museums that understood and collected drawings as important cultural and historical artifacts; and the effect of the new significance of architectural drawings on architecture and architectural history. Drawing on interviews with more than forty people directly involved with the events described and on extensive archival research, Kauffman shows how architectural drawings became the driving force in architectural debate in an era of change.
Book Synopsis Passion and Control: Dutch Architectural Culture of the Eighteenth Century by : Freek Schmidt
Download or read book Passion and Control: Dutch Architectural Culture of the Eighteenth Century written by Freek Schmidt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passion and Control explores Dutch architectural culture of the eighteenth century, revealing the central importance of architecture to society in this period and redefining long-established paradigms of early modern architectural history. Architecture was a passion for many of the men and women in this book; wealthy patrons, burgomasters, princes and scientists were all in turn infected with architectural mania. It was a passion shared with artists, architects and builders, and a vast cast of Dutch society who contributed to a complex web of architectural discourse and who influenced building practice. The author presents a rich tapestry of sources to reconstruct the cultural context and meaning of these buildings as they were perceived by contemporaries, including representations in texts, drawings and prints, and builds on recent research by cultural historians on consumerism, material culture and luxury, print culture and the public sphere, and the history of ideas and mentalities.

This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful and important book highlights the collection of European drawings at the Yale University Art Gallery, one of America's premier university museums. From intimate studies to exquisite finished compositions, this selection of works documents the history of European drawing practices beginning with late-medieval model books and progressing to the verge of the modern period. The accompanying text--written by a team of scholars--offers a unique introduction to various critical and technical aspects of the study of master drawings, brought to life through drawings from a range of national schools and in a variety of media. Among the drawings examined in this handsomely produced volume are an animated pen and ink sketch by Giulio Romano, a pastoral landscape by Claude Lorrain, a forceful and humorous caricature by Guercino, a scene from the epic poem Orlando Furioso by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and a delicate portrait by Edgar Degas.
Book Synopsis Approaches to Drawing in Architectural and Urban Design by : Fabio Colonnese
Download or read book Approaches to Drawing in Architectural and Urban Design written by Fabio Colonnese and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architects draw for a variety of purposes; they draw to assimilate places and precedents, to generate ideas, to develop a concept into a consistent project in a team, to communicate ideas and solutions to patrons and clients, and to guide building contractors during the construction stages, as well as to produce further elaborations in order to publish their project in a treatise, a journal or their own portfolio. Most importantly, architects draw to think and to manage complexity in a visual way. By taking into account innovative and interdisciplinary uses of architectural drawing in the design process, both historical and current, the collection of chapters and interviews in this book frames a new critical perspective and a uniquely contextual appreciation of drawing as a way to encourage spatial thinking and practice in architecture and urbanism. The authors take the discussion to a new level of philosophical sophistication, while also considering drawing in relation to a series of specific engagements with urban development, planning, and architecture.
Book Synopsis The Seventh Window by : Wim de Groot
Download or read book The Seventh Window written by Wim de Groot and published by Uitgeverij Verloren. This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1997 was an important year for Sint Janskerk in Gouda, as the Museo del Prado in Madrid asked to borrow the cartoon of the King's Window by Dirck Crabeth for the exhibition 'Felipe II. Un príncipe del Renacimiento'. Inspired by this event, it was decided to compile an anthology about the church's seventh window. Based on the many-facetted topic an international group of scholars from various disciplines studied the stained-glass window in depth as a crucial presentation of Philip II's Netherlandish and English years. An important step in current research into an enthralling era in European history of the sixteenth century.

Book Synopsis Drawing Relationships in Northern Italian Renaissance Art by : Giancarla Periti
Download or read book Drawing Relationships in Northern Italian Renaissance Art written by Giancarla Periti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vasari's celebration of the art of the central Italian cities of Florence, Rome and Venice, has long left in shadow the art of northern Italy. The economic and historical decline of the region compounded this effect with the dispersal of the treasures of the Farnese to Naples, the Este to Dresden and the Gonzaga to Madrid and Paris. Each chapter in this volume celebrates a stunning work from the region, among them Correggio's famed Camera di San Paolo in Parma, Parmigianino's Camerino in the Rocca Sanvitale near Parma, the studiolo of Alberto Pio at Carpi, and the Tomb of the Ancestors in the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini. The volume as a whole offers fascinating insights into the tussle between the maniera moderna and the maniera devota in the first half of the sixteenth century, when the unity between the elegance and beauty of art and its religious significance came under debate. Around the year 1550, when Michelangelo's Last Judgement came under attack for impiety and lasciviousness and the reformists called for an art that would invoke in the viewer a devotional response that identified manifestations of the divine with human feelings and emotions. In northern Italy, it was on the foundation laid by Correggio, with his tenderness and ability to evoke the softness of living flesh, that the Carracci brothers built their reform of painting.

Book Synopsis The Architecture of Percier and Fontaine and the Struggle for Sovereignty in Revolutionary France by : Iris Moon
Download or read book The Architecture of Percier and Fontaine and the Struggle for Sovereignty in Revolutionary France written by Iris Moon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the official architects of Napoleon, Charles Percier (1764–1838) and Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine (1762–1853) designed interiors that responded to the radical ideologies and collective forms of destruction that took place during the French Revolution. The architects visualized new forms of imperial sovereignty by inverting the symbols of monarchy and revolution, constructing meeting rooms resembling military encampments and gilded thrones that replaced the Bourbon lily with Napoleonic bees. Yet in the wake of political struggle, each foundation stone that the architects laid for the new imperial regime was accompanied by an awareness of the contingent nature of sovereign power. Contributing fresh perspectives on the architecture, decorative arts, and visual culture of revolutionary France, this book explores how Percier and Fontaine’s desire to build structures of permanence and their inadvertent reliance upon temporary architectural forms shaped a new awareness of time, memory, and modern political identity in France.
Download or read book Ornament written by T. L. J. Howard and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a wide-ranging and richly illustrated book, the authors begin by tracing the ways ornament has been used over the last five centuries, the rules of decorum and etiquette associated with it, and the social, moral and spiritual values it has represented. They examine how architecture set the agenda for ornament in the Renaissance, and how printed images carried a common vocabulary of ornament throughout the Western world. They survey the personal side of ornament, both in dress and in the domestic interior - a private expression of the self and a public statement of social and cultural status. They look at ornament in the public domain - from the lavish decoration and symbolism of a town pageant to the logos of today's corporate industry - and show how the ever-evolving role of ornament is to invent and embody the collective spirit of communities at work and at leisure. They conclude by discussing how the Western tradition of ornament has responded to and absorbed 'exotic' African and Asian motifs: Moresque motifs of the Near East and such familiar designs as the 'Paisley' and Willow" patterns.

This book was released on 2006-05-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully produced volume is the first to survey the Metropolitan Museum's world-renowned collection of European furniture. One hundred and three superb examples from the Museum's vast holdings are featured. They originated in workshops in England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Russia, or Spain and date from the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century. A number of them belonged to such important historical figures as Pope Urban VIII, Louis XIV, Madame de Pompadour, and Napoleon. The selection includes chairs, tables, beds, cabinets, commodes, settees and sofas, bookcases and standing shelves, desks, fire screens, athéniennes, coffers, chests, mirrors and frames, showcases, and lighting equipment. There is also one purely decorative piece, a superb vase made for a Russian noble family who, according to one awestruck viewer, "owned all the malachite mines in the world." The makers of some of the objects are unknown, but most of the pieces can be identified by label, documentation, or style as the work of an outstanding European designer-craftsman, such as André-Charles Boulle, Thomas Chippendale, David Roentgen, or Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

Book Synopsis French Drawings, XVI-XIX Centuries by : Gillian Kennedy
Download or read book French Drawings, XVI-XIX Centuries written by Gillian Kennedy and published by Lund Humphries Publishers Limited. This book was released on 1991 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Drawings XVI-XIX Centuries is a fully illustrated catalogue of fifty French drawings from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries, drawn from the Witt collection at the Courtauld Institute Galleries. Instead of a conventional concentration on a particular school, chronological period or type of subject-matter, the keynote of the collection is variety: variety of function, style and technique. The selection of works in this book is intended to reflect that variety, and to highlight the remarkable richness of three centuries of French drawings.
