Book excerpt: In Drawing Near, John Bevere invites readers to explore a life of intimacy with God. Emphasizing the need for obedience, he urges us to practice-just as we would practice anything we hope to improve-our communication with the Holy Spirit. Understanding that prayer is a dialogue, not a monologue, Bevere encourages us to listen at the Father's feet. Book excerpt: You are a royal priest. That Reality Will Change Your Life Human beings are wired for connection. We long for deep relationships and real intimacy—both of which reflect our fundamental desire to be close to God. But all too often, whether because of our sin or our failures, we imagine that God prefers to keep his distance. In this book, Edward T. Welch shows us the purpose for which we were created: to be brought near to God as a kingdom of priests. He traces the priestly identity throughout the entire Bible, showing us how holiness leads to closeness to God. Through the blood of Jesus, God extends his invitation for all to draw near with open arms. And in his presence, we discover what it means to be truly human: known, unashamed, and wise, full of meaning, purpose, and abundant life.

Book Synopsis Drawing the Sea Near by : C. Anne Claus
Download or read book Drawing the Sea Near written by C. Anne Claus and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Japanese coastal residents and transnational conservationists collaborated to foster relationships between humans and sea life Drawing the Sea Near opens a new window to our understanding of transnational conservation by investigating projects in Okinawa shaped by a “conservation-near” approach—which draws on the senses, the body, and memory to collapse the distance between people and their surroundings and to foster collaboration and equity between coastal residents and transnational conservation organizations. This approach contrasts with the traditional Western “conservation-far” model premised on the separation of humans from the environment. Based on twenty months of participant observation and interviews, this richly detailed, engagingly written ethnography focuses on Okinawa’s coral reefs to explore an unusually inclusive, experiential, and socially just approach to conservation. In doing so, C. Anne Claus challenges orthodox assumptions about nature, wilderness, and the future of environmentalism within transnational organizations. She provides a compelling look at how transnational conservation organizations—in this case a field office of the World Wide Fund for Nature in Okinawa—negotiate institutional expectations for conservation with localized approaches to caring for ocean life. In pursuing how particular projects off the coast of Japan unfolded, Drawing the Sea Near illuminates the real challenges and possibilities of work within the multifaceted transnational structures of global conservation organizations. Uniquely, it focuses on the conservationists themselves: why and how has their approach to project work changed, and how have they themselves been transformed in the process?

Book Synopsis Drawing Near by : Pasquale Mingarelli
Download or read book Drawing Near written by Pasquale Mingarelli and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pasquale R. Mingarelli celebrates God as Creator through photography in his devotional Drawing Near. Drawing Near features the work of professional photographer Pasquale R. Mingarelli, who pairs photographs of the natural world with God’s Word. This gorgeous devotional offers readers a delightful way to escape the distractions of this world and intentionally meet with God in a secluded place, just as Jesus did (Mark 1:35). With Drawing Near, believers will dive deep into the context of overlooked Bible verses about nature in order to better understand and know the heart of God. It features Bible passages that address God’s power, His wisdom, His glory, His presence and His love. Mingarelli’s devotional shows readers how to meditate on and apply these verses throughout the “busy-ness” of everyday life. The beauty of God’s creation is meant to be a testament to who He is and how He desires connection with His people. Drawing Near allows those who love to get out in nature to enjoy the world’s natural beauty anywhere—from the office breakroom to a quiet room at home, to a park bench beneath an outstretched tree. In a world that demands attention and often pulls people away from God, Drawing Near offers a place of peace and a time with God.
Book Synopsis Jakarta, Drawing the City Near by : AbdouMaliq Simone
Download or read book Jakarta, Drawing the City Near written by AbdouMaliq Simone and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jakarta, a city rife with disparities like many cities in the Global South, is undergoing rapid change. Alongside its megastructures, high-rise residential buildings, and franchised convenience stores, Jakarta’s massive slums and off-hour street markets foster an unsettled urban population surviving in difficult conditions. But where does the vast middle of urban life fit into this dichotomy? In Jakarta, Drawing the City Near, AbdouMaliq Simone examines how people who the largest part of the population, such as the craftsmen, shopkeepers, and public servants, navigate and affect positive developments. In a city where people of diverse occupations operate in close proximity to each other, appearance can be very deceptive. Set in a place that on the surface seems remarkably dysfunctional, Simone guides readers through urban spaces and encounters, detailing households, institutions, markets, mosques, and schools. Over five years he engaged with residents from three different districts, and now he parses out the practices, politics, and economies that form present-day Jakarta while revealing how those who face uncertainty manage to improve their lives. Simone illustrates how the majority of Jakarta’s population, caught between intense wealth and utter poverty, handle confluence and contradictions in their everyday lives. By exploring how inhabitants from different backgrounds regard each other, how they work together or keep their distance in order to make the city in which they reside endure, Jakarta, Drawing the City Near offers a powerful new way of thinking about urban life.
