Download or read book Hamlet's Moment written by András Kiséry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although we take for granted that drama was crucial to the political culture of Renaissance England, we rarely consider one of its most basic functions, namely, that it helped large audiences to understand what politics was. This book suggests that in this moment before newspapers, drama as a form of popular entertainment familiarized its audience with the profession of politics, with kinds of knowledge that were necessary for survival and advancement in politicalcareers. Shakespeare's Hamlet is particularly interested in these issues: in the coming and going of ambassadors, and in the question of the succession and of the conflict with Norway. Plays writtenby Ben Jonson, John Marston, George Chapman, and others in the following years shared a similar focus, inviting the public to imagine what it meant to have a political career. In doing so, they turned politics into a topic of sociable conversation, which people could use to impress others.
Download or read book Simon Says written by Peggy Chrusciaki and published by Peggy Chrusciaki. This book was released on 2006-09 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As this sequel to the author's SPIDER SONG opens, Joanna Bryce and Dina Miller are struggling to create a harmonious life together. And then the process becomes further complicated by murder-Sweet Birch Lodge seems the perfect place to wait out the Spring Blizzard of 98: old; rustic; creepy creaky; home to a bloody ghost or two, no doubt. Or so the weekend guests at the Ashton Arboretum believe, as they prepare for a night of stormy mayhem. In the morning, when the sleep-deprived visitors assemble in the dining room, it gradually becomes apparent that an unfortunate one of their number is absent. Permanently so. Joanna, naturalist at the arboretum, once again finds herself drawn into the world of murder. Although at first not much involved, additional crimes alter that situation drastically. In the end, she and Dina must combat an unknown killer in a desperate effort to rescue someone they love. Exhausted, with nerves stretched thin and anger at the firing point, they also must rescue their failing relationship. Or let it go. Before the story ends, more than one will have sung the Sad Woman Blues.

Download or read book Unsettled written by Patricia Fumerton and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2006-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migrants made up a growing class of workers in late sixteenth- and seventeenth- century England. In fact, by 1650, half of England’s rural population consisted of homeless and itinerant laborers. Unsettled is an ambitious attempt to reconstruct the everyday lives of these dispossessed people. Patricia Fumerton offers an expansive portrait of unsettledness in early modern England that includes the homeless and housed alike. Fumerton begins by building on recent studies of vagrancy, poverty, and servants, placing all in the light of a new domestic economy of mobility. She then looks at representations of the vagrant in a variety of pamphlets and literature of the period. Since seamen were a particularly large and prominent class of mobile wage-laborers in the seventeenth century, Fumerton turns to seamen generally and to an individual poor seaman as a case study of the unsettled subject: Edward Barlow (b. 1642) provides a rare opportunity to see how the laboring poor fashioned themselves, for he authored a journal of over 225,000 words and 147 pages of drawings. Barlow’s journal, studied extensively here for the first time, vividly charts what he himself termed his “unsettled mind” and the perpetual anxieties of England’s working and wayfaring poor. Ultimately, Fumerton explores representations of seamen as unsettled in the broadside ballads of Barlow’s time.
Book Synopsis Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts, Volume VI by : Walt Whitman
Download or read book Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts, Volume VI written by Walt Whitman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Series Editors: Gay Wilson Allen and Sculley Bradley Originally published between 1961 and 1984, and now available in paperback for the first time, the critically acclaimed Collected Writings of Walt Whitman captures every facet of one of America’s most important poets. Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts gathers Whitman’s autobiographical notes, his views on contemporary politics, and the writings he made as he educated himself in ancient history, religion and mythology, health (including phrenology), and word-study. Included is material on his Civil War experiences, his love of Abraham Lincoln, his descriptions of various trips to the West and South and of the cities in which he resided, his generally pessimistic view of America’s prospects in the Reconstruction and the Gilded Age, and his reminiscences during his final years and his preoccupation with the increasing ailments that came with old age. Many of these notes served as sources for his poetry—first drafts of some of the poems are included as they appear in the notes—and as the basis for his lectures.
Download or read book Mortified written by David Nadelberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2006-11-28 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Share the shame. In the days before blogs, teenagers recorded their lives with a pen in top-secret notebooks, usually emblazoned with an earnest, underlined plea to parents to keep away. Since 2002, David Nadelberg has tapped that vast wellspring of adolescent anguish in the stage show Mortified, in which grown men and women confront their past with firsthand tales of their first kiss, first puff, worst prom, fights with mom, life at bible camp, worst hand job, best mall job, and reasons they deserved to marry Simon LeBon. Following the same formula that has made the live show a beloved cult hit, Mortified the book takes real childhood journals and documents and edits the entries into captivating, comedic, and cathartic stories, introduced by their now older (and allegedly wiser) authors. From letters begging rescue from a hellish summer camp to catty locker notes about stuck-up classmates to obsessive love that borders on stalking, Mortified gives voice to the real -- and really pathetic -- hopes, fears, desires, and creative urgings that have united adolescents for generations.

Download or read book Crypto Wars written by Craig Jarvis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crypto wars have raged for half a century. In the 1970s, digital privacy activists prophesied the emergence of an Orwellian State, made possible by computer-mediated mass surveillance. The antidote: digital encryption. The U.S. government warned encryption would not only prevent surveillance of law-abiding citizens, but of criminals, terrorists, and foreign spies, ushering in a rival dystopian future. Both parties fought to defend the citizenry from what they believed the most perilous threats. The government tried to control encryption to preserve its surveillance capabilities; privacy activists armed citizens with cryptographic tools and challenged encryption regulations in the courts. No clear victor has emerged from the crypto wars. Governments have failed to forge a framework to govern the, at times conflicting, civil liberties of privacy and security in the digital age—an age when such liberties have an outsized influence on the citizen–State power balance. Solving this problem is more urgent than ever. Digital privacy will be one of the most important factors in how we architect twenty-first century societies—its management is paramount to our stewardship of democracy for future generations. We must elevate the quality of debate on cryptography, on how we govern security and privacy in our technology-infused world. Failure to end the crypto wars will result in societies sleepwalking into a future where the citizen–State power balance is determined by a twentieth-century status quo unfit for this century, endangering both our privacy and security. This book provides a history of the crypto wars, with the hope its chronicling sets a foundation for peace.
Download or read book Cromwell at War written by Martyn Bennett and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martyn Bennett here provides the first military biography of Cromwell in the context of the seventeenth century Military Revolution. After commanding a small troop in 1643 and, without prior military experience, Cromwell rose to lead the cavalry regiments of the Eastern Association Army and the New Model Army to final victory at Worcester in 1651 and sealed the victory of the Parliamentary forces in Ireland and Scotland, becoming Lord General in 1650. Martyn Bennett analyses Cromwell's military talents and generalship, in addition to his well-attested powerful and even brutal discipline and religious fervour. He examines the controversial Irish campaigns as well as modern accusations of genocide. In providing new perspectives on Cromwell's military career, Bennett adds to our understanding of England's only non-royal head of state.

Download or read book People and Parliament written by G. Yerby and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fresh and rounded perspective on the English Revolution of the 1640s. It uses detailed evidence to show how the economic requirement for parliament's services underpinned a demand for political change. It suggests that this took shape through a working 'discourse' of ideas about the status of representative forms.
