Book Synopsis South Asian Security by : Sagarika Dutt
Download or read book South Asian Security written by Sagarika Dutt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Asian security complex refers to security interdependencies between the states in the region, and also includes the effect that powerful external actors, such as China, the US and Russia, and geopolitical interests have on regional dynamics. This book focuses on the national securities of a number of South Asian countries in order to discuss a range of issues related to South Asian security. The book makes a distinction between traditional and non-traditional security. While state-centric approaches such as bilateral relations between India and Pakistan are considered to be traditional realist approaches to security, the promotion of economic, environmental and human security reflect global concerns, liberal theories and cosmopolitan values. The book goes beyond traditional security issues to reflect the changing security agenda in South Asia in the twenty-first century, and is a useful contribution to studies on South Asian Politics and Security Studies.

Book Synopsis India's Approach to Border Management by : Pushpita Das
Download or read book India's Approach to Border Management written by Pushpita Das and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to provide a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances which have shaped India’s approach towards its international borders and the framework it has developed to better manage its borders. The book argues that persistence of various cross-border threats and challenges and an absence of robust intra-regional trade among its neighbouring countries forced India to employ a security-centric and unilateral approach to border management with emphasis on hardening the borders to cross-border trade and travel and keeping the border areas underdeveloped to act as a buffer against external conventional threats. Besides discussing the threats and challenges that India faces along the borders, the book aims to develop an understanding of India’s border management practices by analysing various programmes and initiatives such as the raising of border guarding forces; building of physical and electronic fences; the establishment of modern facilities for smoothening legitimate cross-border travel; the development of the border areas through special programmes; and increasing trade and connectivity as well as other cooperative bilateral mechanisms. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Bhutan).
Book Synopsis Entangled Lives by : Joy L. K. Pachuau
Download or read book Entangled Lives written by Joy L. K. Pachuau and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers three questions about understanding the past. How can we rethink human histories by including animals and plants? How can we overcome nationally territorialised narratives? And how can we balance academic history-writing and indigenous understandings of history? This is a tentative foray into the connections between these questions. Entangled Lives explore them for a large area that has seldom been explored in academic inquiry. The 'Eastern Himalayan Triangle' includes both uplands and lowlands. The region is the meeting point of three global biodiversity hotspots connecting India and China across Myanmar/Burma, Bangladesh and Bhutan. The 'Triangle' is treated as a multispecies site in which human histories have always been utterly intertwined with plant and animal histories. It foregrounds that history is co-created – it is always interspecies history – but that its contours are locally specific.

Book Synopsis The Himalayan Face-Off by : Shishir Gupta
Download or read book The Himalayan Face-Off written by Shishir Gupta and published by Hachette India. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?Even if bilateral trade between India and China goes beyond $100 billion in the coming years, China?s posture towards India is adversarial and will perhaps remain so in the future, with Beijing viewing New Delhi through the prism of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile? A rising China, inflexible on boundary dispute resolution and with strong tentacles across South Asia and beyond, could encroach on India?s strategic space and lead to a potential crisis this decade.? In April 2013, Indian troops sighted an advance patrol of the Chinese People?s Liberation Army (PLA) 19 km deep within Indian territory, a considerable distance from the Line of Actual Control, the de facto border claim line that was drawn up after the 1962 war between the two countries ? a war that still traumatizes the mind of India?s political and military establishment. Protracted negotiations led to the withdrawal of Chinese troops, but the incursion laid bare the intent of the world?s largest standing army. Despite recent advances in the bilateral relationship, highlighted by the nearly $70 billion trade between the two countries, China continues to regard Indian interests as secondary, and India as a regional adversary. In this breakthrough work, seasoned journalist and author of the bestselling Indian Mujahideen Shishir Gupta details the various advances made by Beijing, particularly the PLA, in encircling India and stifling the latter?s bid to break out as an aspiring superpower. Gupta discusses Indian political, diplomatic and military responses to China?s assertion in the subcontinent and beyond, and the various course corrections India must undergo in its foreign and defence policies to counter China?s might and influence on matters of India?s national security. In describing how India must realize and counter China?s clout over its friends and enemies if it is to achieve superpower status, Gupta sheds new light on Indo-China relations. The Himalayan Face-Off: Chinese Assertion and the Indian Riposte is an important reminder of the realigned geopolitics of the modern world, where the two most populous nations on the planet are essentially battling each other over their share of the global pie ? sometimes on the world?s highest battlegrounds. Book Synopsis Cities of Dragons and Elephants by : Guanghua Wan
Download or read book Cities of Dragons and Elephants written by Guanghua Wan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urbanization is one of the most important phenomena in economic development. In the past three decades, Asian urban populations expanded by almost one billion, a figure expected to double in the next three decades. Clearly, both the scale and pace of urbanization in Asia is unprecedented in human history and will dominate the global urbanization landscape. Asia's urbanization, in turn, is dominated by what is happening in China and India, the two most populous, fastest growing economies in the world. Cities of Dragons and Elephants: Urbanization and Urban Development in China and India aims at addressing the two most fundamental issues of urbanization: why and where to urbanize. Contributed by a team of top experts from both countries, it uses original research to explore both the speed and scale of urbanization and urban systems or spatial distribution of urbanities in different-sized citites. It examines various drivers of urbanization alongside the benefits and costs and the role of markets, governments, and NGOs. Cities of Dragons and Elephants presents evidence-based policy suggestions regarding the labor market, the land and housing market, FDI and the capital market, education, environment, poverty, and inequality. It uses the similarities betwen India and China to draw conclusions and implications of enormous relevance to many governments and institutions in Asia and beyond.

Book Synopsis China’s Use of Military Force in Foreign Affairs by : Markus B. Liegl
Download or read book China’s Use of Military Force in Foreign Affairs written by Markus B. Liegl and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains why China has resorted to the use of large-scale military force in foreign affairs. How will China use its growing military might in coming crisis and existing conflicts? This book contributes to the current debate on the future of the Asia-Pacific region by examining why China has resorted to using military force in the past. Utilizing fresh theoretical insights on the causes of interstate war and employing a sophisticated methodological framework, the book provides detailed analyses of China’s intervention in the Korean War, the Sino-Indian War, China’s border clashes with the Soviet Union and the Sino-Vietnamese War. It argues that China did not employ military force in these wars for the sake of national security or because of material issues under contestation, as frequently claimed. Rather, the book’s findings strongly suggest that considerations about China’s international status and relative standing are the principal reasons for China’s decision to engage in military force in these instances. When reflecting the study’s central insight back onto China’s contemporary territorial conflicts and problematic bilateral relationships, it is argued that the People’s Republic is still a status-seeking and thus highly status-sensitive actor. As a result, China’s status ambitions should be very carefully observed and well taken into account when interacting with the PRC. This book will be of much interest to students of Chinese foreign policy, Asian politics, military and strategic studies and IR in general.
