Book excerpt: This research program used experimental measurements and computational simulations to study the drag reduction, and the resulting effects on turbulence structure, for a turbulent wall flow subjected to lateral wall oscillations. Major objectives for this study were to establish wall oscillation conditions resulting in maximum drag reduction, and how the turbulence structure was altered so that this drag reduction was attained. Furthermore we were interested in the drag reduction performance over a range of Reynolds numbers, and the onset of the drag reduction at the start of the oscillating wall section, and the decay of drag reduction downstream of the oscillating wall. Our experiments showed the maximum drag reduction for an oscillating wall is 30%. Furthermore, the drag reduction reaches an asymptotic level with increasing wall oscillation velocity, with the maximum level occurring by approximately W sub wp=15. Drag reduction performance was tested for Reynolds numbers of Re theta =500, 950, 1400 and 2400, and the performance was found to be independent of Reynolds number for this range. Experimental and computational studies of the turbulence structure showed the oscillating wall has dramatic effect in practically eliminating the streak structures. Furthermore, the burst and sweep structures were suppressed.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the mathematical techniques for turbulence control in a form suitable for inclusion in an engineering degree program at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels whilst also making it useful to researchers and industrial users of the concepts. It uses a mix of theory, computation and experimental results to present and illustrate the methodologies. It is based on the three part structure, wall turbulence, open loop control and feedback control with emphasis on optimal control methodologies. The book also includes an introduction of basic principles and fundamentals followed by a chapter on the structure of wall turbulence with emphasis on coherent structures. Elsewhere there is focus on control methods of wall turbulence by manipulating the boundaries though their motion and by applying control forces throughout the flow volume. The last two chapters will describe the linear and non-linear optimal controls. This integrated approach will help not only researchers interested in the topic but also graduate or advanced undergraduate students in their course work.

Book excerpt: A numerical model of turbulent boundary layer flows over compliant walls was investigated. The model is based on Burton's observation that outer flow structures in turbulent boundary layers produce large scale pressure fluctuations near the wall. The results of calculations indicate that certain small wavelength wall motions can have a significant effect upon the stability of turbulent boundary layers. Orszag, S. A. This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanwise wall-oscillation is a promising drag reduction technique in turbulent flows. A major factor in drag reduction is the effect of the oscillations on the boundary layer coherent structures, and particularly the weakening of the near-wall streaks. This thesis studies the streaks in various wall oscillations configurations, based on a linear approach to the turbulent flow. The two main aspects are the study of the structures themselves, and an attempt to predict drag. The streak structure is studied mainly in turbulent channel flow subject to harmonic wall forcing, using an optimal perturbation technique. It is shown that the streaks have an angle to the main flow direction, which is almost constant during half an oscillation period and experiences a jump in sign and magnitude twice per period. The linear theory shows that this phenomenon is due to the existence of a structure which is dominant during half a period and has a constant angle. Other features of the linear optimal perturbations are studied, such as their comparison with conditionally averaged turbulent structures. In order to predict drag, the optimal perturbation approach is found to be unsuitable. A more appropriate technique is to use the linearised Navier-Stokes equation subject to random forcing. This was done for a turbulent channel flow subject to travelling wave wall oscillations, thus offering a wide range of comparison with direct numerical simulations, including known regions of drag reduction and drag increase. The main finding is that in the area where drag increase is observed in turbulent flow, the linear operator is unstable. In area where the operator is stable, drag reduction is always predicted. These two topics are the core of this thesis. Other aspects include the derivation and implementation of an optimal perturbation algorithm and a linear solver. Certain theoretical aspects of the optimal perturbation approach were also investigated.

Book excerpt: The European Drag Reduction Meeting has been held on 15th and 16th November 1990 in London. This was the fifth of the annual European meetings on drag reduction in engineering flows. The main objective of this meeting was to discuss up-to-date results of drag reduction research carried out in Europe. The organiser has adopted the philosophy of discussing the yesterday's results rather than the last year's results. No written material has therefore been requested for the meeting. It was only after the meeting the submission of papers was requested to the participants, from which 16 papers were selected for this proceedings volume. The meeting has attracted a record number of participants with a total of 52 researchers from seven European countries, U. K. , France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and U. S. S. R. as well as from Japan, Canada and Australia. The subjects covered in this proceedings volume include riblets, LEBUs (Large Eddy Break-Up device), surface roughness, compliant surfaces and polymer additives. Riblets seem to be one of the most extensively studied devices in the past years. Reflecting this situation in the European community, there are six papers on riblets covering their practical applications to aircraft and to a model ship, near-wall coherent structure of the boundary layer and effects of flow three-dimensionality. Possibility of heat-transfer enhancement with riblets and potential use in the laminar flow are also investigated. An analytical model is developed for the boundary-layer with a LEBU device.

The calculation of flow drag on automobiles and high-speed trains benefits from theories in fluid mechanics. Moreover, many mechanical-based devices such as fluid pumps contribute to efficiency, and thus, to the modernization of society. This book highlights the experimental and theoretical aspects of wall-bounded flows to provide important information about related theories and applications. Boundary layer flow experimentation, modelling, and simulation must be considered together to obtain accurate calculations of parameters such as velocity profiles, pressure distribution, and turbulence level. This book is organized into three sections on the structure of the boundary layer, drag reduction initiatives using active control, and the verification and applications of flow mechanics. Chapters discuss the boundary layer type of different pressure gradients, Reynolds number, and speeds from 5 m/s to Mach 3. They also present the results of research on the active control technique for drag reduction initiatives to achieve efficient turbulence in high-speed applications, flow meter devices, and turbulence-generated noise mitigation initiatives.
