While the established stock and modified brackets are long-recognized as the heart and soul of drag racing, it was the wheelstanders that more often than not put butts in the bleachers. In that category, some of the most well-known names included Bill "Maverick" Golden's Little Red Wago, Bill Shewsberry's L.A. Dart and Chuck Poole’s Chuck Wagon. Although, most memorable of all was the Hurst Hemi Under Glass Plymouth Barracuda campaigned by Bob Riggle. Riggle started his career in the early 1960s as a car builder and mechanic for Hurst-Campbell and eventually ascended to pilot the Hemi Under Glass. When he left Hurst in 1969, the Hemi Under Glass franchise transferred with Riggle. He continued for six more years as the owner/driver of a succession of Hemi Under Glass renditions. In the 1990s he resurrected the concept of the original car—making four different versions (1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969)—and continued to thrill drag racing fans with his wheelstanding antics. At the time of this writing, Bob’s last run with the Hemi Under Glass was in the summer of 2019. He claims to have retired (he was 83 years old at the time), but he’s claimed that before! For all the success he enjoyed over his long and distinguished career, which is believed to be one of the longest in all of motorsports, he’s best remembered for a run at Irwindale Raceway in early 2016 with comedian and car buff Jay Leno in the passenger seat in a video that has been viewed more than 10 million times. This is Bob’s story, one that Mark Fletcher and Richard Truesdell, co-authors of the 2012 book Hurst Equipped, are honored to share. They say the story was easy to tell—given their unprecedented access not only to Bob but also to his vast archive of photos that reflect his ongoing popularity. Many of the photos in this book are seen in print for the very first time.

Funny Cars cut their teeth in the A/Factory Experimental (A/FX) and Experimental Stock (X/S) classes in 1964 with the 2-percent Mopars that looked funny with their axles moved forward. However, it was Jack Chrisman’s supercharged, nitro-fueled 427 Supercharged Factory Experimental (S/FX) Comet Caliente that trailblazed the class on which the NHRA turned its back and the AHRA fully accepted. Showmanship became the draw in the dawn of Funny Car with half-track burnouts and flame-throwing headers that packed fans five deep at the fence. By 1969, the NHRA had no choice but to create a class for these nitro-breathing, flip-top-sporting rail bruisers, indoctrinating the Funny Car (F/C) class at the Winternationals with 40 cars vying for 16 places in the field. The rest, as they say, is history!

In the aftermath of Operation Desert Storm, bomb disposal teams are tasked to clear the thousands of unexploded munitions scattered throughout Kuwait City. U.S. Army Captain Brick Revloc is a bomb disposal officer in charge of coordinating Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operations. He's a savvy, scrappy little guy whose mouth lands him in as much trouble as the exotic places to which he travels. The threatening news that a weapon of mass destruction may be planted somewhere in the city by stay-behind Iraqi forces finds Brick Revloc in a race against the clock to locate and neutralize an improvised nuclear device that could contaminate the entire Persian Gulf region. Later, suffering disillusionment from his experience and failure to get promoted, Revloc leaves the Army and joins an agency whose mission is to investigate former military bases for the presence of unexploded bombs. He's sent to Adak, a small, inhospitable island in the Aleutian chain. During World War II, it was the scene of fierce fighting between U.S. troops and Japanese forces. Now, North Korean special operations troops have infiltrated the island. Experiencing turmoil brought on by food shortages and a severely depressed economy, North Korea discovers that in World War II, containers of Lewisite, a type of mustard gas, were abandoned by the U.S. military on Adak Island. The North Koreans contrive an elaborate scheme to recover the toxic chemical and use it to their advantage. Their goal is to reunite the Korean peninsula by provoking a military response between the United States and China. By releasing the liquid blister agent onto the shores of main land China, they hope to create a chaotic situation where Taiwan is blamed. Their plan relies on the U.S. responding to an attack on Taiwan by China. In an inhospitable environment described as "the birthplace of the winds," two small groups of men battle for survival: the Americans attempting to prevent the North Koreans from getting away with their nefarious scheme, and the Koreans tracking down the only ones who can thwart their plan.
