Book excerpt: Auckland's North Shore has long been known as a place apart, a place of leisure known for its beautiful beaches and relaxed lifestyle. Until the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in 1959, it was viewed by many city-siders as a holiday destination, but the past 40 years have seen it transformed into a vital city in its own right. Yet its European origins go back to the earliest days of the settlement of Auckland. This lively history tells the story of the Shore's development from Maori and early contact times up to local body amalgamation and the formation of the first 'North Shore City' in 1989. It covers themes such as transport, industry, population growth and settlement patterns, arts and architecture, religion and sport. Presented in a coffee-table format, it is fully illustrated with historic photographs and paintings which will fascinate those familiar with the Shore as it is now. The book will be launched during the city's 2010 Heritage Week festival, in time to celebrate the city before Supercity amalgamation.

Book excerpt: In Ben Sanders's American Blood, a former undercover cop now in witness protection finds himself pulled into the search for a missing woman; film rights sold to Warner Bros with Bradley Cooper attached to star and produce. After a botched undercover operation, ex-NYPD officer Marshall Grade is living in witness protection in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Marshall's instructions are to keep a low profile: the mob wants him dead, and a contract killer known as the Dallas Man has been hired to track him down. Racked with guilt over wrongs committed during his undercover work, and seeking atonement, Marshall investigates the disappearance of a local woman named Alyce Ray. Members of a drug ring seem to hold clues to Ray's whereabouts, but hunting traffickers is no quiet task. Word of Marshall's efforts spreads, and soon the worst elements of his former life, including the Dallas Man, are coming for him. Written by a rising New Zealand star who has been described as "first rate," this American debut drops a Jack Reacher-like hero into the landscape of No Country for Old Men.

Book excerpt: When a failed witness protection operation ends in multiple homicides, evidence suggests the crime is linked to a series of violent robberies in Auckland City. For Detective Sergeant Sean Devereaux, solving the case is proving next to impossible. His own superiors in the police department are refusing to cooperate with his investigation. After Devereaux shoots a suspect in a botched surveillance job, he is forced to start providing the answers rather than demanding them. With his career on the line and old demons threatening to consume his very sanity, Devereaux is running out of time as he succumbs to a nightmare world of extreme brutality, where bad and desperate men stalk both sides of the legal divide.

Book excerpt: In 1984 the medical journal Obstetrics and Gynecology published a paper that would initiate an investigation into one of the greatest medical scandals of the late twentieth century. Titled "The Invasive Potential of Carcinoma in Situ of the Cervix", it discussed the results of an experiment that had been run at the National Women’s Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, since 1955. The experiment looked at the natural history of cervical carcinoma in situ (CIS) – in other words, what happens if no treatment is initiated in a condition suspected (when the experiment began) to lead to cervical cancer. The paper divided participants into two groups, one that had negative results after biopsy or treatment, and one smaller group that continued to test positive. This second group had a significant rate of cervical cancer; some of these women were followed for twenty-five years without treatment, and in only 5% did the disease spontaneously resolve. For the other 95%, outcomes ranged from positive but localised results to metastatic disease and death. The authors said these results were in contrast with other, earlier papers about the experiment. After much research, Sandra Coney, one-time editor of a NZ feminist magazine, and Phyllida Bunkle, a women’s studies lecturer, wrote an article about the experiment, exposing the unauthorised research performed by one prominent gynaecologist in support of his belief that CIS was not associated with cervical cancer. Professor Herbert Green, a physician of considerable influence and power throughout New Zealand, persisted in his belief despite increasingly convincing proof of a progressive connection between the two conditions, never sought permission from his patients, or even told them what he was doing.

Book excerpt: Evening lectures in a cold basement in 1917 mark the meagre beginnings of the University of Auckland's School of Architecture and Planning, now a highly rated and internationally competitive school. The Auckland School holds a special place in New Zealand's architectural and planning history, because it combines the country's oldest school of architecture and its oldest department of planning. Other New Zealand universities did not establish professionally recognised schools and programmes in these disciplines until the 1970s. The history of the Auckland School therefore underscores the development of both disciplines in this country. This book, published on the occasion of the School's centenary, surveys its history, from academic achievement and pedagogical change through to student pranks, strikes and even the occasional revolt. It is a history full of life, energy and strong personalities.
