Book excerpt: This code (CoGAP) consolidates and updates the former three separate codes for water, soil and air. The publication offers practical interpretation of legislation and provides good advice on best practice; 'good agricultural practice' means a practice that minimises the risk of causing pollution while protecting natural resources and allowing economic agriculture to continue. It has been written by technical specialists from Defra and Natural England. All farm staff and contractors on the farm who handle, store, use, spread or dispose of any substances that could pollute water, soil or air should be aware of their responsibilities and know about the causes and results of pollution. They should know how and when to operate and maintain the equipment they use, and know what to do in an emergency. The CoGAP provides an important point of reference, based around the main operations that farmers, growers and land managers might undertake; the advice covers activities carried out in the field, but also management plans, farm infrastructure and waste management.

Book excerpt: The A Practical Approach series is the perfect partner for practice work. Each title focuses on one field of the law and provides a comprehensive overview of the subject together with clear, practical advice and tips on issues likely to arise in practice. The books are also an excellent resource for those new to the law, where the expert overview and clear layout promotes clarity and ease of understanding. A Practical Approach to Environmental Law provides comprehensive coverage of the full range of law and legislation relating to the environment, including; The Environmental Assessment of Plans and Programmes Regulations 2004; the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004; and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004, written in a clear and user-friendly style. To ensure accessibility and ease of reference, the book is organized into three sections, focussing in turn on; the principles of environmental protection such as the polluter pays principle, the precautionary principle, and sustainable development; substantive environmental law areas (such as noise, waste and water); and practice and procedure. The practice and procedure section covers remedies available under civil law, with practical advice on case management, injunctions and compensation, and costs. It also covers criminal law offences, procedures for prosecuting, and sentencing guidelines. Very much a practical guide, A Practical Approach to Environmental Law makes extensive use of cross-referencing, examples, checklists, case studies, and key reference documents, to assist the practitioner in quickly locating the material they need, whilst also providing valuable context for the student coming to this complex subject for the first time.

Book excerpt: This report finds that, although the pig industry is highly competitive and is well known for being cyclical, the last ten years have seen a steady decline in the scale and productivity of the English pig industry and an increase in the pig meat imported into the UK to satisfy consumer demand. The lack of transparency in the supply chain leads farmers to form the view that they are not getting their fair share. UK pigs cost more to produce than their EU counterparts. The industry blames this on the effects of disease outbreaks, high feed prices, burdensome environmental regulations and the high cost of the introduction of new welfare standards of housing for pigs in 1999. Pig producers are rightly proud of their high welfare standards, but the Committee believes that they have not successfully promoted to the consumer the justification for the higher cost of English pig meat. Retailers and catering suppliers are responsible for ensuring that labelling of pig meat products is clear and unambiguous, but producers, animal welfare groups such as the RSPCA, and Government, have a role in making certain that consumers understand the difference between the standards of welfare in the various methods of pig production and ensuring that pig meat produced in the UK is of a high welfare standard. Defra must continue to: advise other Government departments and public bodies on the welfare standards of farm assurance schemes in order to encourage them to adopt a more innovative approach in public sector procurement of pig meat; liaise closely with the industry on its Health and Welfare Council; fund research into the pig-specific diseases which have severely impacted on the industry in recent years.

Book excerpt: Information on some 800 products--pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, plant growth regulators, animal repellents, nematicides, soil penetrants, seed treatments, composting aids, micronutrients, and speciality fertilizers. All of the products listed are currently available. No bibliography. Compiled by the Centre for Law in Rural Areas, based in Aberystwyth, Wales, nine essays explore legal and political issues involved in promoting conservation in the countryside in a manner consistent with modern farming techniques. The impetus is concern over rural mid- Wales, but the perspective of the essays is British and European. Among the topics are agricultural diversification, pollution, the organization of conservation authorities, common land, and sites needing special protection. Book excerpt: The rural areas of Britain, Europe and the developed world are undergoing massive changes, with increasing concern about productivity, agricultural methods and environmental policy. Rural Politics examines the issues affecting rural areas, such as water pollution, forestry, and the greening of agricultural policy. It looks in particular at the political parameters to these issues and how concern for the countryside is essentially a part of a wider set of political processes. Rural Politics provides a much needed examination of the evolution and content of policies affecting today's countryside, both in terms of major land uses and economic and social development.
