Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of magnesium alloys is increasing in a range of applications, and their popularity is growing wherever lightweight materials are needed. This book provides a comprehensive account of the corrosion of magnesium alloys. It covers not only the corrosion performances and mechanisms of Mg alloys in conventional environments, such as sodium chloride solutions, but also looks at their corrosion behaviours in special media, like engine coolants and simulated body fluids. Part one covers fundamentals such as the corrosion electrochemistry, activity and passivity of magnesium and its alloys. Part two then considers the metallurgical effect in relation to the corrosion of magnesium alloys, including the role of micro-structure and earth-rare elements, the corrosion behaviour of magnesium-based bulk metallic glasses, and the corrosion of innovative magnesium alloys. Part three goes on to describe environmental influences on the corrosion of magnesium alloys, such as atmospheric corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, creep and fatigue behaviour, and galvanic corrosion. Finally, part four is concerned with various means of protecting magnesium alloys against corrosion through the use of aluminium electrodeposition, conversion and electrophoretic coatings, and anodisation. With its distinguished editor and team of contributors, this book is an invaluable resource for metallurgists, engineers and designers working with magnesium and its alloys, as well as professionals in the aerospace and automotive industries.
Download or read book Magnesium Alloys written by Alano Riley and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallic materials continue to play an essential role as biomaterials to assist with the repair or replacement of bone tissue that has become diseased or damaged. Metals are more suitable for load-bearing applications compared with ceramics or polymeric materials due to their combination of high mechanical strength and fracture toughness. Currently approved and commonly used metallic biomaterials include stainless steels, titanium, and cobalt-chromium-based alloys. A limitation of these current metallic biomaterials is the possible release of toxic metallic ions and/or particles through corrosion or wear processes that lead to inflammatory cascades which reduce biocompatibility and cause tissue loss. A resistance of magnesium alloys to surface degradation is paramount for their applications in automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics and general-purpose markets. The book places emphasis on oxidation, corrosion and surface modifications, designed to enhance the alloy surface stability. It covers a nature of oxides grown at elevated temperatures and oxidation characteristics of selected alloys in consort with elements of general and electrochemical corrosion. Medical applications are reflected that explore biocompatibility of magnesium alloys. Also techniques of surface modifications, designed to improve not only corrosion resistance but also corrosion fatigue, wear and other behaviors, are described. It will be a valuable resource for scientists and engineers from academia and industry. Magnesium is most commonly alloyed with other metals when being used in structural applications. Magnesium and its alloys which are chemically active can degrade naturally in the physiological environment by corrosion and are potential candidates in biodegradable hard-tissue implants. Magnesium alloys are mixtures of magnesium with other metals (called an alloy), often aluminum, zinc, manganese, silicon, copper, rare earths and zirconium. Magnesium is the lightest structural metal. Magnesium alloys have a hexagonal lattice structure, which affects the fundamental properties of these alloys.

Download or read book Transient Techniques in Electrochemistry written by Digby Macdonald and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of electrochemical reactions by relaxation or transient techniques has expanded rapidly over the last two decades. The impetus for the develop ment of these techniques has been the desire to obtain quantitative data on the rates of "fast" electrochemical processes, including those coupled to homogeneous chemical reactions in solution. This has necessarily meant the development of techniques that are capable of delineating the effects of mass transport and charge transfer at very short times. The purpose of this book is to describe how the various transient techniques may be used to obtain the desired information. Emphasis is placed upon the detailed mathematical development of the subject, since this aspect is the most frequently ignored in other texts in this field. In any relaxation or transient technique for the study of rate processes, it is necessary to disturb the reaction from equilibrium or the steady state by applying a perturbing impulse to the system. The system is then allowed to relax to a new equilibrium or steady-state position, and. the transient (i. e. , the response as a function of time) is analyzed to extract the desired kinetic information. In electrochemical studies the heterogeneous rate constants are, in general, dependent upon the potential difference across the interface, so that the perturbing impulse frequently takes the form of a known variation in potential as a function of time.

Book excerpt: METALLURGICAL PROBLEMS MY ALLISON BUTTS, A. B., B. S. Professor of Electrometallurgy, Lehigh U Co-author of Engineering Metallurgy SECOND EDITION THIRD IMPRESSION McGRAW-HILL BOOK COMPANY, INC. NEW YOKK AND LONDON 1043 METALLURGICAL PROBLEMS COPYRIGHT, 1932, 1943, BY THE McGRAW-HiLL BOOK COMPANY, INC. PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA All rights reserved. This book, or parts thereof, may not be reproduced in any form wthout permission of the publishers. DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF JOSEPH WILLIAM RICHARDS PIONEER IN METALLURGICAL CALCULATIONS AN INSPIRING TEACHER AND A MAN OF RARE QUALITIES PREFACE The purposes in view in preparing the second edition of this book may be included largely in three categories 1 the desirability of bringing the work up to date both with respect to changes in the fundamental data used in metallurgical calculations and with respect to changes in metal lurgical practice 2 changes dictated by the experience of the author and of others in eleven years use of the book, particularly with regard to textual clarification, arrangement, and better balance of the problem material and 3 the desirability of making available new problem material in place of some of that which has been used repeatedly in class instruction over a long period. The first edition of A Textbook of Metallurgical Problems was an outgrowth of Professor Joseph W. Richardss book Metallurgical Calculations which was regarded by many as one of the most useful books available to the metallurgical industry. Since Richardss volume was not in a form most suitable for use as a college text, it was then the object of the present author not only to produce a more recent work in the same field asMetallurgical Calculations, but also to make available a book more adaptable to student use. In this second edition the same objects remain the title has been shortened to Metallurgical Problems both for the sake of brevity and to avoid emphasizing its function as a textbook to the exclusion of a hoped-for usefulness to industry. The first edition of this book attempted to follow the methods and forms used by Richards to such an extent as to make it relatively easy to use by those accustomed to his book, while at the same time using more recent data, new material in accordance with later practice, and some innovations in harmony with instructional changes made in college depart ments of chemistry and physics. The same plan is followed in the second edition, but the changes have been carried further, following progress in technical education. For example, free energy and other thermo dynamic concepts did not appear in Richardss book, nor was any use made of methods of calculus. These were introduced in the first edition of this book and have been extended in the second edition. Nevertheless, knowledge of higher mathematics is still relatively unimportant in the use of the book also, the substitution of the more familiar heats of reaction for free-energy change has not been abandoned for approximate calcula tions when these may be properly used. With regard to heats of reaction, vii Viu . PREFACE a change has been made in this edition to the A concept and notation now so widely adopted in physical chemistry and therefore made familiar to present-day students. In revising the physical and chemical data in this book, the author has drawn from recently published compilations acknowledged atthe appropriate places rather than from original sources. These - compila-tions for the most part present data in the forms most often desired in scientific work. In some instances these are not the forms most useful in industry, and much time has been spent by the author in conversion to what seemed to be a more readily usable basis...
