Book excerpt: When it appeared in 1953, Uma Prasad’s book on Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s detention and death in Kashmir created a wave of indignation. It reproduced documents connected to Dr. Mookerjee’s arrest and death and gave a gripping account of the manner in which he was arrested, detained and allowed to die. Dr. Mookerjee’s mother Jogmaya Debi’s letter to Nehru, pleading for an enquiry, Nehru’s refusal to order it, Sheikh Abdullah’s obfuscations, all of these find place in this book. Why was Dr. Mookerjee allowed to enter Jammu and Kashmir and then arrested? Why were high doses of a particular injection, to which he was allergic, administered to him? How did his diary disappear—are among the many questions that this book raises and attempts to answer. Above all it gives the readers an idea of how obstinate, self-obsessed, arrogant and scheming a man was Jawaharlal Nehru, who, as it comes across in this book, was not only economical with the truth but had literally pushed Dr. Mookerjee to his end. A must read for all those who wish to understand the truth behind the sudden end of a momentous and promising life.

Book excerpt: This brief biography of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, one of the tallest personalities of our time, narrates the fascinating story of the struggles and achievements of an unknown boy from an unknown village who, by dint of his extra-ordinary intelligence, keen intellect, hard work and selfless service rose to join the front rank of our national leaders—the builders of modern India. Beginning with Rajendra Babu’s ancestry, it takes us through his childhood, education, brief lawyer’s career, Champaran Satyagraha with which began his close association with Mahatma Gandhi, and his subsequent involvement in Indian politics. A brief account of the successive phases of the national movement in which he was an active participant carries the story further. The significant role he played in constitution-making in his capacity as the President of the Constituent Assembly, and the guidance he provided to the nation as the first President of the Republic of India, make up the rest of the story, which, finally ends with a description of the brief nine-month period of his post-retirement days spent in his old hermitage Sadaqat Ashram in Patna. A useful handbook on the life and career of an illustrious son and architect of modern India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word ‘lok’ means public and ‘manya’ means accepted. Thus lokmanya means a person who has been accepted by people. In his context it means accepted by people as their leader. ‘Lokmanya’ Keshav Bal Gangadhar Tilak was recognized by the British as the Father of the Indian National Movement because of activities that stirred feelings of nationalism in the hearts of every Indian. Though his ideals often differed from Mahatma Gandhi; his views regarding crucial matters were sometimes accepted many times by Gandhiji. A revolutionary and social reformer in the true sense of the word; he was a freedom fighter who elicited esteem from all; even his enemies. His indomitable spirit was appreciated by people. He voiced his opinions in speeches and through the newspaper; and everyone especially the British feared his speeches as well as editorials for they provoked Indians to fight for freedom. The British tried to put a ban on them; but did they succeed? The book observes Tilak’s multifaceted personality through the eyes of people. It is a beneficial book for students; scholars and historians alike.

Book excerpt: The relationship between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh a cultural organisation and the political partiesÑBharatiya Jana Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party is unique in the history of Indian polity. Because of the shared ideology and cadre, the inner working and the interpersonal relationships have been a matter of surmise and conjecture. It has become more so now when the BJP has got an absolute majority to become the ruling party at the centre. With an unbroken relationship stretching from 1951 onwards, it is the informal weave of brotherhood that has made it a successful operation. This book depicts the history, foundation and development of this relationship and how this symbiosis has played out over the years.

I have decided that after concluding my autobiography, I would give complete attention to ‘Vishranti’. It is a pleasure writing my autobiography. It feels good to revisit and rewind through my thoughts and through my pen – the life that I lived, journey that I traversed for many years, sights seen and experienced and losses and gains along the way. Last year when I started working on my autobiography, I was not sure about disclosing these incidents since some senior leaders would not be too pleased. But I am determined now, since I am out of active politics and my presence in politics is going to be in name only. I have been telling my friends that I am going to be a guest artist in politics now. I was a politician earlier so my freedom of expression had to be restricted. Now, I am a writer first and then someone else, therefore it is my right to enjoy and employ a writer’s freedom of expression. I have fully utilised that right in writing my autobiography, and many things unsaid have been laid out in the open. I have lived my life. I have lived fully and joyously. I have lived this life and told its story and shared my life experiences in abundant details. I will dedicate the rest of my life to God Almighty in Vivekanand Sewa Kendra. I will wait for the moment when I fulfil all my duties and go back to where I came from. Truthfully speaking, I would go smiling and laughing with a song in my heart and a spring in my step.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many great people in India’s postIndependence history have gone into oblivion only because they were not part of the Nehruvian consensus or refused to adopt models of communism or socialism. These forgotten personalities were also proud of India’s rich history and dreamt of bringing back its lost glory. They believed in the integrity of India and devoted their life to it – so that India could rise as leader in the comity of nations. Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was an unheralded political personality of the 20th century. He was a great patriot who renounced his life for the betterment of society. His achievements in his short life span were remarkable. ‘Pledge for an Integrated India: Dr. Mookerjee in Throes of Jammu and Kashmir’ is a tribute to India’s unity and solidarity, and an answer to those who declared Dr. Mookerjee ‘communalist, fascist and obscurantist’. He opposed Nehru’s decisions relating to Jammu and Kashmir solely because they were contrary to India’s interest. He advocated that the Indian nation should have only One Flag, One Constitution, One Prime Minister and One President. This book reveals the failures of Jawaharlal Nehru who was responsible for the imbroglio in Jammu and Kashmir. At the same time, this book provides a meticulous and unbiased study of Dr. Mookerjee’s arguments, which have been conveniently sidelined over the years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution of India, have always been distorted by the people involved in the Left and minority alliance, and the Congress. Due to their personal interests, they always presented Babasaheb as a leader of the downtrodden and Dalits. They tried to portray him as if he nowhere contributed to the upliftment and development of the country. Today these separatists want to spread unrest in the country on the pretext of a Dalit-Muslim alliance. Realising these things, Dr. Ambedkar talked about the complete transfer of the Hindu and Muslim populations in the event of the partition of the country in 1940. He gave Constitution to the country which is still protecting the integrity and unity of the country. He opposed Article 370 in the Constitution, but it was added because of Nehru's love for particular community. As a research student of Economics, he gave the idea of the Reserve Bank of India and the Finance Commission. As the Law Minister of the country, he prepare Hindu Code Bill, to paved the way for women’s empowerment and the right of women to inherit ancestral property. This book is an attempt to bring to light the nationalist thoughts of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and protray his contribution to the development of the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bureaucracy of Beauty is a wide-ranging work of cultural theory that connects literary studies, postcoloniality, the history of architecture and design, and the history and present of empire. Professor Ananya Roy of UC Berkeley calls it a "fantastic book," and in many ways this is the best description of it. The Bureaucracy of Beauty begins with nineteenth-century Britain's Department of Science and Arts, a venture organized by the Board of Trade, and how the DSA exerted a powerful influence on the growth of museums, design schools, and architecture throughout the British Empire. But this is only the book's literal subject: in a remarkable set of chapters, Dutta explores the development of international laws of intellectual property, ideas of design pedagogy, the technological distinction between craft and industry, the relation of colonial tutelage to economic policy, the politics and technology of exhibition, and competing philosophies of aesthetics. His thinking across these areas is ignited by engagements with Benjamin, Marx, Adam Smith and Jeremy Bentham, Kant, Mill, Ruskin, and Gandhi. A rich study in the history of ideas, of design and architecture, and of cultural politics, The Bureaucracy of Beauty converges on the issues of present-day globalization. From nineteenth-century Britain to twenty-first century America, The Bureaucracy of Beauty offers a theory of how things - big things -change.

Book excerpt: Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and controversial leaders in India's recent history. In spite of his significant political and ideological differences with Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr Mookerjee was inducted to the first cabinet of independent India. However, following the Delhi Pact between the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan, Dr Mookerjee resigned from the cabinet. His role during the Great Bengal Famine of 1943 and the Great Calcutta Killings and Noakhali Carnage of 1946 was historic. His premature death in custody--in Kashmir--remains one of the unsolved mysteries of India's political history. Dr Mookerjee was an educationist, politician and patriot who often opposed the official narratives of his time but fought consistently for India's independence and pre-eminent position in the world. His life has remained largely unexplored till now. This biography aims to rectify that omission by examining his life in detail and shedding light on the turbulent and contentious events of his times.
