This novel translated to English as The Seat of Power was published by Sahitya Akademi. The present book Modern Assamese Drama consists of two epoch making dramas- Gunabhiram Barua’s Ram Navami and Dr Birinchi Kumar Baruah’s Ebelar Nat. Anandaram Dhekial Phukan, Hem Chandra Barua and Gunabhiram Barua were the harbingers of the nineteenth century Renaissance in Assam. While in Calcutta he came under the influence of Raja Rammohan Roy, Vidyasagar and Keshav Chandra Sen, founder of the Brahmo Samaj. He was determined to fight social evils like child marriage and do away with the taboo against widow-remarriage. These are the leading themes of Ram Navami Nat; which appeared serialized in the Orunudoi from 1957. The plot veers around the natural urge of Ram as he falls in love with the child-widow Navami. The pair of lovers were crushed under the chariot wheels of social prejudices. The tragedy was written under the influence of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Bhabhuti’s Malati Madhavam. Even after the lapse of one hundred and fifty-five years the drama is not obsolete, although the socially conscious Gunabhiram Barua was not a propagandist but was fully aware of a writer’s artistic responsibility. Ebelar Nat is an avant-garde play covering only the period of half a day, without any change of scene within the bright and well-decorated drawing room of Madhuchanda Barua, whose make-up bespeaks the presence of an ultra-modern lady. The characters of the play are few, though the dialogues are plenteous and pointed. One interesting character is Manorama whose obesity and expensive ornaments testify to her husband’s ill-gotten money. Barua draws a vivid picture of the newly-emerging pseudo-aristocratic society after India’s independence, marked by consumerism and ruthless competition for the acquisition of wealth. While the young people are for the rejection of old social values, the young women favour complete emancipation from the tyranny of men. The death of the representative of the old order symbolises the dissolution of that very order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology, Verses is a distinct avowal to not take tradition on trust. The poems of sixty-eight Assamese poets are a cornucopia of good news. Beginning with the poet Kamalakanta Bhattacharya of the mid-nineteenth century and ending with Kushal Dutta in the latter half of the 20th century, Verses have branched out with poems, like the sky with ribbed clouds. There is a curiously heaving picture of grief, bright hope, social angst, diversified norms, subtle and pronounced, where schisms run deep and wide. The old-world charm is taken over by the avant-garde appeal of the later poets. The anthology does not seek casual browsing by readers, for there are verses that need to be dwelt on with earnest. The poems of the poets that come earlier in the content list are a class apart! Those in the middle are again to be noted. And further ahead, the poems are of a varied and richer strain, modern in content and style, serious in tone and reflect the social anxieties. One must feel them with every fibre of ones being. Verses is an anthology presented by two sisters of a scholarly home. One an avid reader of poetry and the other a poet through life, and they hand-picked the best poets. The anthology is an anchor of love, where translation opens the key to the silence that language had locked in since scores of years. From Assamese, the poems flow evenly into English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarasvati assumes different roles, a physical river and a river goddess, then as a goddess of speech and finally that of a goddess of learning, knowledge, arts and music. References to Sarasvati in the Vedas and the Brahmanas, the Mahabharata and the Puranas and her marked presence in other religious orders, such as Buddhism, Jainism and the Japanese religion, form the basis of discussion as regards her various attributes and manifestations. In Jainism, her counter-part is Sutra-devi, in Buddhism it is Manjusri and Prajnaparamita and in the Japanese religion, Benten is the representative goddess. The physical presence of Sarasvati in various iconic forms is seen in Nepal, Tibet and Japan. Tantrism associated with Sarasvati also finds reflection in these religious traditions. Sculptors and art historians take delight in interpreting various symbols her iconic forms represent. The book examines Sarasvati’s origin, the course of her flow and the place of her disappearance in a holistic manner. Based on a close analysis of texts from the early Rig-Veda to the Brahmanas and the Puranas, it discusses different view-points in a balanced perspective and attempts to drive the discussions towards the emergence of a consensus view. The author delineates the various phases of Sarasvati’s evolution to establish her unique status and emphasise her continued relevance in the Hindu tradition. The book argues that the practice of pilgrimage further evolved after its association with the river Sarasvati who was perceived as divinity personified in Hindu tradition. This, in turn, led to the emergence of numerous pilgrimage sites on or near her banks which attracted a large number of pilgrims. A multifaceted and interdisciplinary analysis of a Hindu goddess, this book will be of interest to academics researching South Asian Religion, Hinduism and Indian Philosophy as also the general readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “More than a century ago, Sir Henry Cotton had referred to Assam as a veritable ‘Cinderella’ waiting for her Prince Charming. Angered at such a reference Bordoloi had said, ‘We have not come here as beggars. We just want what is justice and what is perforce our right. Assam with her tea gardens, her oil fields, her coal fields, her mineral resources, her forest resources, have European share-holders sitting comfortably in their homes in England, while the people in Assam are referred to as Cinderellas!” – ‘Karmavir’ Nabin Chandra Bordoloi “Mr Bordoloi was an overzealous and dynamic personality, who essayed a role by virtue of his patriotism and courage which shall always remain exemplary.” - Bhulabhai Desai “In every epoch, India shall have the need for a charismatic and eloquent personality like Nabin Chandra Bordoloi in Assam, breathing the quest of success to freedom!” - Mahatma Gandhi “I belong to a family of loyalists. I gave up my law practice, my western garb and donned khadi, because my heart wanted it. A slave always remains a slave, remember that always. Tagore had given up his very knighthood! Gandhi sought redress from insolent and arrogant rulers. We in Assam chose to have non-violence, non-cooperation and civil disobedience to follow the path of Ahimsa as shown by Gandhiji.” – ‘Karmavir’ Nabin Chandra Bordoloi
