Book excerpt: A science-based approach for transforming ailments of both body and mind through cold-water swimming. The belief that swimming in cold water can improve one's health is hardly new. For centuries, people from all over the world have reported that immersing themselves in cold water alleviates their pain and improves their overall well-being. Even Katharine Hepburn famously claimed to treat her winter colds by swimming in the icy waters of the Pacific Ocean. But until now, the practice has been treated lightly by the scientific community, the curative effects all but dismissed by doctors seeking medicine-centered solutions for their patients' illnesses. In Chill, expert anesthetist and researcher Dr. Mark Harper delivers long-awaited evidence that cold-water swimming can, in fact, achieve powerful, tangible health benefits. Combining science with case studies and stories from the lives of patients, Dr. Harper illuminates the ways in which cold water can impact us physiologically and mentally, alleviating conditions like: • chronic pain • arthritis • anxiety • depression • PTSD • migraines • and more Dr. Harper guides us in safely establishing our own customized practice of cold-water swimming in order to harness the therapeutic power of water for improved circulation, a strengthened immune system, cell regeneration, and everyday vitality. Eye-opening and actionable, and full of extraordinary discoveries about our minds, our bodies, and the healing powers of Earth's most plentiful resource, Chill is a drug-free, no-cost, revolutionary approach to lasting wellness and rejuvenation. FOR EVERY SKILL LEVEL: With inspiring and instructional narrative case studies, Chill gives readers a highly accessible, cost friendly approach to healing—whether you are an athlete or someone who enjoys wading in the water. Many of the cases studies include people who could hardly swim! A NEW APPROACH TO COLD WATER PRACTICES: For readers who enjoyed The Wim Hof Method and Blue Mind, Dr. Harper offers a science-based, proven approach to the trending health and fitness practice of cold-water immersion. A NATURAL WAY TO HEAL: Joining an ever-growing genre of natural, drug-free alternative programs to heal ailments and improve overall health, Chill will call to readers who came to books like Alejandro Junger's Clean: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself and Jon Kabat-Zinn's Full Catastrophe Living: How to Cope with Stress, Pain and Illness Using Mindfulness Meditation.

Including Emma Lenford, who’s just lucky enough to vomit on international television, win a trip to Wisconsin’s worst-kept vacation hotspot, and even find out that she’s related to some very infamous faces. Despite her newfound “luck”, Emma struggles to find a way to gain control of her life. She’s fully convinced that she’s been somehow cursed, and she has to figure out how stop the tragedies that keep befalling her before they get a little too out of control. Although, once you’ve been trapped and tortured via the ultimate atomic wedgie in a goat barn decorated with severed human body parts, maybe things have already gotten too far out of your control. Emma Lenford is truly the unluckiest 17-year-old on the planet. She keeps her sense of humor, though, through this series of seriously ill-fated situations. Her life is basically a sit-com where one traumatic thing after another befalls her, and it's all out of her control. She's constantly kidnapped, held at gunpoint, and even arrested for things she honestly didn't even do. Follow her as every supposedly lucky adventure turns south in the fourth book of the series that makes us all wonder, “what’s luck got to do with Emma Lenford?”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection is designed to explore the ethical nature of judicial decision-making, particularly relating to cases in the health/medical sphere, where judges are often called upon to issue rulings on questions containing an explicit ethical component. However, judges do not receive any specific training in ethical decision-making, and often disown any place for ethics in their decision-making. Consequently, decisions made by judges do not present consistent or robust ethical theory, even when cases appear to rely on moral claims. The project explores this dichotomy by imagining a world in which decisions by judges have to be ethically as well as legally valid. Nine specific cases are reinterpreted in light of that requirement by leading academics in the fields of medical law and bioethics. Two judgments are written in each case, allowing for different views to be presented. Two commentaries - one ethical and one legal - then explore the ramifications of the ethical judgments and provide an opportunity to explore the two judgments from additional ethical and legal perspectives. These four different approaches to each judgment allow for a rich and varied critique of the decisions and ethical theories and issues at play in each case.

Best buddies Noodle and Zeek love adventure—and that’s a good thing, because they clearly can’t stay out of trouble. “A throwback to the Hardy Boys” mixed with “plotting reminiscent of Saturday-morning cartoons,” award-winning author Tony Abbott’s high-energy series is pure fun (Booklist). This complete set of all six books kicks off with Danger Guys, a “good-natured parody of the likes of Indiana Jones films” (Publishers Weekly). Danger Guys: Best friends Noodle and Zeek are among the first in line when a new store selling survival gear, Danger Guy, opens in their mall. But when a small room in the store turns out to be the back of a truck, they’re in for a terrifying ride to an ancient temple full of treasures. Danger Guys Blast Off: When Noodle and Zeek discover their old science teacher is actually an evil scientist who wants to blow up their school, they must defeat a giant robot, learn to fly a rocket, and defuse the bomb before it’s too late. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Social Work Law: analysing court cases and inquiries presents legal issues associated with social work in an accessible format. It approaches the law in a way that is less daunting and more engaging by examining actual court cases and public inquiries, and explores the stories of real people and the legal and ethical dilemmas practitioners will face. The text adopts a problem-centred approach to learning by introducing the reader to key aspects of the law through a series of real-life situations; it addresses basic principles regarding the operation of the law and explores the lessons for good practice. Each chapter addresses a specific area of social work law including family breakdown, safeguarding children, youth justice, adults with disabilities, mental health and mental capacity. Landmark cases, cases drawn from the lower courts, tribunals, and ombudsman’s decisions are included throughout presenting an accessible account of the application of the law. Practical Social Work Law is an essential text for undergraduate, postgraduate and recently qualified social workers who are wrestling with the complexity of the law and the professional dilemmas it poses for their practice. "This book is unusual for a law book in that it is not only a reference book but also a very readable volume...[It] is set out clearly and provides a sound basis for student social workers new to the law and a refresher for qualified practitioners." Based on extensive research, it reveals a disturbing collusion of interests responsible for creating a distorted understanding of changes in global climate. Scientific institutions, basing their work on critically flawed computer simulations and models, have gained influence and funding. In return they have allowed themselves to be directed by the needs of politicians and lobbyists for simple answers, slogans and targets. The resulting policy -a 60% reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050would have a huge, almost unimaginable, impact upon landscape, community and biodiversity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are The Cheeksters and this is how they all came about... I just wanted to give you a little history on them. This idea was first conceived when our son Jimmer was born back in 1989. My other son TJ was 7 at the time and when we brought Jimmer home, TJ was intrigued by the cheeks that Jimmer had and commented about them frequently. One day, because TJ knew that I liked to dabble in making different craft items, he said to me Mommy you should make a doll that looks like Jimmer with his big cheeks, then you can call them The Cheeksters. Well at the time I just laughed and said it was a cute idea but didnt really consider something like that until years later when Jimmer was about 5 or so and he still had those cheeks! I decided to give it a try just for fun because I really enjoyed trying to create things. They first started out as a sock that I stuffed with cotton and drew a face on them. Then I decided that I wanted to put his big feet on them too so then the doll looked like a face with big cheeks and big feet (if youve seen Jimmers size 14 feet youll know why I wanted to add those on to the doll) and of course we used TJs idea for a name and called them The Cheeksters. The difference of how they looked back then and how they look now is how far Ive come at perfecting them just the way I wanted them to look. When we started we thought of 7 different characters. They were Jimmer Jammer, (of course for baby Jimmer), Talented TJ, Lovely Lindsay, Mischievous Michael, Sweet Suzy, Neat Ned, and Rapper Roberto, . When my son TJ was in high school and I had revisited the idea of trying to do something with the Cheeksters, I asked him to write a little poem that went along with each of those. Then we added Messy Marvin, Cool Calvin, Moviestar Monica, Curly Q Carla, and on and on. I probably have about 20 or 30 characters now and the sky is the limit with them. Finally I decided to write a series of books about The Cheeksters. The main character is Jimmer Jammer and the title of the books will be called The Jimmer Jammer Stories with stories about the Cheekster characters. The stories will have a moral theme to it with Jimmer Jammer giving some advice to the young readers at the end. My son Jimmer didnt even know that I was working on these books. He knew of the Cheekster dolls that I had all over the house during his growing years, but didnt know about the books. I recently showed them to him. He approved and hopes that they do well. So we hope that you and your children enjoy them.
